  1. Shocked there wasn’t a penalty called on the TD.
  2. I was at the 1980 concert at the Erwin Center as well. Second row from the stage. A guy in the frat was on the events committee and didn’t know who Springsteen was. It was amazing. I saw him again at Moody Center this year. The guy can still play.
  3. The gumbo recipe with the shrimp cooked to death is crazy. But not too surprising because Cajun/creole cooking is all over the place. My mother’s family is from the Lake Charles area. Not true Cajun, but more French via New Orleans, and my grandmother cooked some mighty fine gumbo, jambalaya and grillades. Many of her recipes were very close what you’ll find in Emeril Legasse’s Real and Rustic cookbook which I highly recommend if you like traditional Cajun food.
  4. It was a great show, but are you sure about that venue? I was at his show at The Summit on December 8, 1978. Here is the playlist: Dec 8, 1978 The Summit, Houston, TX Set One Badlands Streets of Fire It's Hard To Be A Saint In The City Darkness On The Edge Of Town Spirit In The Night Independence Day The Promised Land Prove It All Night Racing in the Street Thunder Road Jungleland The Ties That Bind Santa Claus Is Coming To Town The Fever Fire Candy's Room Because the Night Point Blank She's the One Backstreets Rosalita (Come Out Tonight) Born to Run Detroit Medley Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out You Can't Sit Down Quarter To Three
  5. I liked it as well. Good script and well acted. Ruth steals every scene.
  6. My friends in the media business tell me that the PGA Tour is done. They were horribly mismanaged. I don’t really get the nuances but it does seem like they were asleep at the wheel.
  7. Really? You had to bust through the closed guard rail.
  8. I don't follow PETA--maybe they have already objected, but if not, it's only a matter of time that they complain about using animals in old sayings. I'm waiting for these to be a problem: Crazy like a fox. (even though actually a complement) Strong as an ox. Hungry as a bear. So hungry I could eat a horse. Beat a dead horse. Hold your horses. Stubborn as a mule. Poor as a mouse. Madder than a wet hen. Scaredy-cat. Like a bull in a china shop. Snake in the grass. 800 lb. gorilla. Elephant in the room. Wild goose chase. In the doghouse. Cat got your tongue? Kill two birds with one stone.
  9. In addition to the tire requirements that have been covered, I suspect you are aware that Independence Pass is closed for the season. You have a few options. It’s longer but you can do freeway much of the way by using I25 north, going around Denver, and hitting I70 West to Glenwood Springs and then down to Aspen on 82. If it’s good weather you can haul ass on I25 and I70. Or, you can go through central Colorado using 285 north much of the way. You’ll hit I70 just west of Vail. I’ve done both and it depends on the weather and how you like to drive. We go to Snowmass a few times a year now and we stopped trying to drive there in the winter. Hell, the flights into Aspen can be challenging. Last year my family was delayed a couple of days getting in because of heavy snowstorms.
  10. Well, you tried doing it the right way. I would just cut it at your property line. Be careful not to trespass over his property line. His tree would look a lot better it it was trimmed properly. Basically, you’ll be topping it along your property line.
  11. Yes, you can cut tree limbs that encroach over your property line. I had that issue several years ago when I built a pool. I didn’t want the extra leaves falling into the pool. I talked to the neighbor first and, as luck would have it, he said he had been considering taking the tree out completely. I chipped in on the cost and it was win/win. I would talk to your neighbor first. Assuming he likes the tree, there’s a better way to trim it vs just cutting the branches at the property line, but you probably have to access the tree from his property.
  12. I’ve made 4-5 gallons of chili at chili cook offs. It’s not terribly difficult. IIRC, that probably calls for 12-14 lbs of meat—maybe a little more. Get course ground meat and some chuck and cube it to about 3/4 inch pieces. Season the meat with seasoned salt. Brown the meat in batches. You can find powder based chili recipes online and adjust the seasonings for your number of pounds of meat. When it’s browned, add the dry powders in two or three dumps. After the meat is browned I add the first spice dump and the liquids-beef stock or water and Knorr’s beef concentrate or whatever liquid you use. A beer or two would be good too. After about 30 minutes of simmering, add the second spice dump. I simmer it for another 30 minutes and start tasting it. You might not need the rest of the dry spices. Add a little tomato sauce if that’s your thing. I like a little tomato sauce in my chili but too much is a bad thing. I usually aim for simmering my chili for 1 1/2 hours total. As for chili powder, my favorite is Mexene. The recipe you choose probably will have cayenne powder for heat. I hold off adding it all until I taste for spiciness, especially if I’m cooking for a group with diverse heat tolerances.
  13. Same here. The estimates for the impact on recreational golfers are all over the place. The first thing I read said that the impact would be 5 yards or less for most of us. Then I read some golf pundits saying it could be 20 yards or more for 10-20 handicappers. I guess we’ll see. Another question is whether the manufacturers will sell both balls until 2030 or just sell the new conforming ball beginning in 2028 giving non pros two years to exhaust their stash. Golf ball sales will go through the roof in late 2027.

    Getting old sucks

Happens to me all the time now and I have no clue how I did it. Bruises too. I take a baby aspirin everyday and I'm told that makes it easier to bruise.
  15. Damn, get those pants taken up about 4 inches.
  16. Great that the shooter is dead.
  17. One of the earliest aggie jokes I remember: Q: What’s the best thing that ever came out of College Station? A: Highway 6.
  18. Of course the question is whether it’s enough, but if the Supreme Court affirms the Second Circuit’s decision, the Sacklers will be paying $6 billion to settle the claims.
  19. Interesting post. I assume you know that, speaking of Nobel Peace Prizes, Kissinger did receive the Nobel Prize for peace.

    Getting old sucks

Yep. I immediately asked to be put back under. It was my dreams just before waking —I can’t recall details but it was like I was in paradise. I’m due for my next one in 2024 and I’m actually looking forward to it. It’s propofol, I believe.
  21. This is true but I don’t see why it’s so hard for people to grasp. The famous assassins, or would be assassins, of key figures since 1968 (RFK, MLK, Ford, Reagan, JPII) were obscure people.
  22. I liked it and it is well acted, but it is light years from the Bogart, Ferrer, and MacMurray film. And IIRC they left out my favorite line when Ferrer, after throwing his drink in Keefer’s face, offers to wait in the lobby if Keefer wants to fight him. If the line was in the film it wasn’t nearly as memorable as when Ferrer delivered it.
  23. Exactly. The first time I drove the route was my first OU weekend as a freshman. I was shocked at how close Oswald was to the motorcade.
  24. Damn, some of you guys are really old. And some of you are still wet behind the ears. I was 16 months old when he was assassinated. Obviously don’t remember it. But I do remember the assassinations of 1968 when I was 6.
