  1. This. You smell them before you see them.

    Getting old sucks

Both shingles shots gave me fever and chills for about 24 hours. Still worth it.
  3. Should be obvious. More bars, more events, and more big city problems that can become an issue. In the cities I mentioned, compared to Austin, there’s not much to do besides chase tail and everyone does that no matter where they are. Just to be clear, I never said that Austin is the only problem. It’s the coach first (and I’ll repeat that Sark is not the guy) and I agree that the BMD’s are too involved in the process. I still think Austin also is a factor.
  4. That’s a problem as well, no doubt. But it’s a lot easier for the players, who tend to not be the most disciplined young men to begin with, to stay focused in places like Tuscaloosa, Athens, Baton Rouge, etc., where there’s not as much going on.
  5. Sark is not the guy and the city of Austin doesn’t help. It might be a positive during recruiting but there are too many distractions in Austin for the student athlete.

    Gumbo

I’ve always measured the oil and flour by volume and with a 1:1 ratio. Never had a problem doing so.
  7. On the cut of pork, HEB sells boneless pork stew meat in 1 to 1.5 pound packages. It seems to be cut from the pork butt. I used it recently and it would be perfect for any braised or stewed pork dish.
  8. Some of you idiots should know that mattress Mac does a ton of good for the community. I don’t give a shit if he also sells a ton of furniture and makes a profit doing so. Actually, that’s a good thing. No CR, though.
  9. I’m of the camp that it probably helps but it’s still the Indian and not the arrow. I upgrade every few years and I love my irons when I hit them well, but you still have make a good swing. On the other hand, I’m 60 and I’m hitting my newish irons and newish driver/3 metal longer than I ever have.
  10. From my office. I hope there’s not a crowd crush on the street to the left.
  11. I wonder how much he has to refund to his customers. His monthly sales numbers are shockingly high I'm told.
  12. I've got a great view of one entire block of the parade route from Chase Tower looking west down over the Plaza. I'm guessing I see a couple of thousand people in that space.
  13. I’m anti liquid smoke as well, but he puts it in the water pan. I can’t imagine it would make a difference either way.
  14. Same here except I got Covid in June. Very mild case. I’m getting the seasonal flu shot on Thursday (when my firm provides it) but my PCP is agnostic on another Covid booster. I’m leaning toward no more Covid boosters.
  15. My 86 year old mother wears some type of alert device around her neck in case she falls. We also have the Snug Safety app on our phones that requires her to check in on her iPhone each morning or else I will get a text that she failed to check in.

    Getting old sucks

Not necessarily an old thing. I’ve had them since early childhood. Eye doc says not to worry about it.
  17. Luckiest inning ever for the yanks.
  18. Depending on how many I’m making, I may go up to a minute. I also just put them on a plate with no paper towel. I too see no difference between this method and the quick pan fry. It’s way less messy and one less pan to clean.
  19. Microwave the tortillas in a bit of vegetable oil. They come out perfectly.
  20. We need a Star Chamber. That’s hyperbole. Maybe.
  21. The decision was made before the meeting. The meeting was pretty much all about the logistics of carrying out the final solution. Much of the discussion was how to get the bureaucrats to coordinate their departments to achieve the extermination of all Jews in Europe and then how to get rid of the bodies. They discussed the method of execution (gas) and the method of disposal (industrial furnaces). The film shows, among other things, that it's no small feat to murder and dispose of that many bodies.
  22. It is a great film. I found it interesting that a handful at the meeting were not so fired up at the mass murder of millions. The one army guy got nauseous and had to leave the room. The lawyer that wrote the Nuremberg laws was against the mass murder but was fine with sterilizations and state sponsored apartheid. In the end, they all had to go along with Heydrich’s plan. Heydrich got his due but it cost Lidice and Lezaky dearly. And I still love the parable of the son whose parents die and how he cried over the one he hated, but not over the one he loved.
  23. Not sure “very rarely” is best way to say it, but I haven’t seen the numbers. Off the top of my head I can think of the Atlanta child killer (Williams?) and the DC snipers. One of the guys was named Malvo IIRC. Now this guy, apparently.
  24. I was in the Crawford Box this afternoon and Alvarez’s home run was about a foot above my outreached hand. Their pitcher pitched a great game. Great win by the Astros.
  25. Sure, many institutions, leaders, and countries did bad things hundreds of years ago. And there are bad actors in every place still today. Shocker. My point about the Church’s consistency in petitioning for all of the mistreated and maligned remains. And that point was made in response to what was a statement that some churches single out only the unborn for their prayers and don’t include the poor and others that should get attention.
