  1. C’mon, it’s not that bad. I don’t regret watching it. I will say that Sandy Stern was missed. He made the movie.

    Getting old sucks

I have to believe they didn’t misdiagnose you, but I thought I had hives of some sort several years ago and it turned out to be shingles. It was pre-Shingrex. It only knocked me down for a day or so and I was given some antibiotics and it was gone within a week. I since got the Shingrex shots so hopefully it won’t come back.
  3. He was born in 1932 and KK 1 was released in 1984. The actor was 52. Perhaps his character was supposed to be 37?
  4. I still love my R7’s. They are part of my second set I keep in Colorado. My new TM 790’s are nice though.
  5. I researched this and I couldn’t make it work. During the derecho I had no sun for 48 hours after the power went out. So I need batteries that would last that long. The batteries alone would cost me around $40k. Then there’s the solar panels. I don’t have near the roof space for the number of panels I would need. My portable generator with a couple window units is a good solution for around $2,800 all in.
  6. My question as well. I was without power for 10 days after Ike, six days after the derecho and two days after Beryl. It depends on your location, vegetation density and the nesting issue. I do agree that CP’s PR after Beryl was awful.
  7. Exactly. When I saw the email from our IT department I thought Crowdstrike was the code name for some evil hacker group.
  8. Well, that was the work around that my firm’s IT department suggested for everyone until they get to us. They got to me very quickly. You have to be in the office but it took about 3 minutes to delete the bad file and reboot. It’s just a huge pain to go through 100’s of laptops. And, it least in our case, it can’t be done remotely.
  9. My personal Dell machine is not affected. I’m able to login to my firm’s network without any issues.
  10. Using your personal machine to login to your company’s network is one work around that will work for many people. Works for my law firm.
  11. I hope not. Tiger 15-0 over Monty in major wins.
  12. Not sure of the respectful response here. But there’s no fucking way I can make battery/solar work with any outrageously conservative power use. Not even close.
  13. I recently priced the solar/battery option with the 2 day battery reserve at my average consumption for August/September. I need 120 kWh per day on average in those months. I was quoted $60k and they couldn’t convince me that I had room for the number of solar panels needed to run my house and recharge the batteries after 2 days of using battery power alone. I estimated that I need 50 panels and I have nowhere near that roof space. After I buy another window unit and install a transfer switch, I’ll be in for about $2,500 (including the portable generator and another window unit I bought the day of the hurricane) and that will allow me to cool two bedrooms for sleeping and keep a fridge going and run the internet and some TVs. The downside for me is having to keep feeding gasoline to the generator every 12 hours. It’s still worth it.
  14. Yep. Monty is not fit to be Tiger’s locker room attendant.
  15. Well, duh. I’ve been in Houston since 84 and a life long resident of SE Tex. Houston is a great city with many things going for it. But NYC, despite its faults, is one of, if not the, greatest city on Earth. No other city in the US compares to NYC. Not that I could ever live there though.
  16. Exactly. I saw pines down all over the Villages, with a few oaks, and numerous big oaks down in Tanglewood. One home on Shady River Drive in Tanglewood lost two huge oaks from the front yard. Luckily they fell to the street or the house would have been destroyed. HCC lost 35 trees (actually, surprisingly few), mostly oaks. That part of Tanglewood didn’t get power until Sunday. Drive down Woodway between Sage and Voss and you’ll see that most of the power lines on both sides of the street are covered with trees (oaks and pines and even crape myrtles). During the next storm many of them will fall and many people will be without power for another week. CP likely won’t do anything so if was a homeowner along that path I’d be hiring a tree service right about now. Some of those folks have generators, but not all of them. I walked the area extensively after the storm and I suspect only 1 in 8 homes had generators running.
  17. Exactly. There is an issue in some areas with a high number of natural gas generators going on at the same time. It can cause a drop in the pressure necessary to maintain service. Some areas also may not have gas lines large enough to supply the needed gas. edit. And, of course, CP owns the gas lines.
  18. Buried power lines. Downtown Houston never lost power for the same reason.
  19. The generator I bought last Monday required an initial oil change at 25 hours and then every 100 hours of operation. It went about 48 hours when my power was restored and I did my first oil change then. The oil wasn’t black, but very dark brown. They weren’t kidding about the initial 25 hour change. People I know with large natural gas fired generators told me they also have to replace the oil very often.

Those help with tennis elbow as well.
  21. There’s some exaggeration in your post. Many of those lots are very large, as you said, so there’s plenty of room in most back yards for trees that won’t fall on power lines. Front yards are wide open for large trees in most neighbourhoods because the lines usually come in from the back. I’d be fine paying extra money each month to bury the lines and make the transformers flood-proof. But many people can’t afford it.
  22. Yep. That happened to me during the derecho in May. A tree took down a line across the street that served about 20 of us. We were among the last to have power restored.
  23. They are fucking themselves by not taking care of their vegetation. I’ve been throughout the Villages since the storm and there are countless lines down because of fallen trees and very tall bushes. Many still without power. CP has done a shitty job of trimming/chopping down trees/bushes. Still, if it was my home or property I’d remove any tree or tall bush that could possibly take out a power line. And I know several people in the Villages that, for whatever reason, don’t have a generator and they either are staying with friends, got a hotel or left town. We are all empty nesters so it’s easier to leave.
