    Getting old sucks

Denton Cooley would tell his friends about heart disease that except for smoking--smoking will kill you, it's your genes. He saw a few hearts in his time.
  2. Interesting. I didn’t think there was a Christian religion that hadn’t adopted the Nicene Creed. Learn something new every day.
  3. Exactly. I have a former law partner that moved from the NYC area to The Woodlands in the late 90's. His commute to downtown was shorter than NYC, he had a much larger home, good schools for his kids, he joined The Woodlands CC and could play several different golf courses--year round. He thought he moved to heaven.
  4. Wade fish the Texas surf on a calm day with green or clear water (yes, it happens) and you’ll see several sharks. Most are pups but the larger ones are there. They’re always there you just usually can’t see them.
  5. Yes, but they had to deal with the hedgerows first.
  6. The battery pack alone doesn’t last very long if you want to power your whole house. I have a friend with one and his only lasted several hours during the outage in Houston a few weeks ago. You would have to add solar and make sure you have enough battery to last—at least for me, 24 hours with no sun. I priced it a week ago and it’s around $60k to run my whole house—and that’s assuming I have enough roof space for the number of solar panels I need. I’m probably going with a portable generator and a window A/C unit to keep my bedroom cool and to run my fridge and some lamps.
  7. Ya think? Same here. That said, the Brits and French had many opportunities to squash that little corporal and they failed.
  8. Exactly. He did preserve French honor in 1940, but he was an arrogant ass all during the occupation and the post-war years.
  9. It’s not really animosity to the French per se. I love the French and their culture. I’m around 1/4 French blood. It’s animosity to the French (and for that matter the British) leadership in the mid to late 1930’s that I despise.
  10. Probably already posted, but it never gets old.
  11. I saw the Night of Nights speech but not Ike’s address. I may have missed it but here it is. Soldiers, Sailors, and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force! You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hope and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world. Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely. But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to Victory! I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory! Good luck! And let us beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking
  12. For the reasons stated, Italy was problematic. But my avatar had been pushing for the main invasion to be in the Balkans (which had its own challenges ) in order to be as far east as possible when Germany was conquered. He (wisely) saw the Cold War coming and wanted as much of Eastern Europe as possible to be free post-war. FDR said no.
  13. Of course. If I’m Hamas, I only launch attacks from civilian areas. Any response by Israel, it will be claimed, is a war crime, genocide, etc.

Double check that math. He was born in 1934 and Cocoon was released in 1985. But he still looked much older than 51.
  15. Just finished this. I’m the last guy on the planet that would be into a show about fashion icons I’m a WWII nut and the Nazi occupation of France and the post-war effort to root out collaborators is very interesting. This show is very well acted and well done. Sad that Dior died at age 52 in 1957. Chanel died in 1971.

You nap guys are lucky. I’m 61 and the only times I ever had a nap was after an early fishing or hunting trip. Except for that, I’ve never been able to fall asleep during daytime hours.
  17. Exactly. I suspect in modern warfare we would have surrendered to the Germans. The medic from Louisiana seemed to be crying out for a surrender. Yet, the leadership did the right thing and held out even though perhaps, in the very short term, some Americans might have been saved. I believe the leadership made the right call. War is hell.
  18. Played for the first time in three weeks. Walked the front nine with a 105 heat index. Cart for the back nine. Very high humidity even for Houston.
  19. We went there at least once a week growing up in Fort Bend Co. That greasy cheese was unique. Similar to the old Felix queso.
  20. We downsized when the kids graduated from college. It’s a patio home with no real yard. I’ve got around 4 feet to the property line all around the house. There is a flower bed near the front entrance that might provide enough room for the City of Houston setbacks, but it would be sitting a few feet from my front door. So it’s not really an option unfortunately.
  21. My power was finally restored this past Wednesday. Longest I’ve ever been without power in Houston since moving here from college at UT in 1984. I’m looking (again) at power alternatives. I don’t have room around my patio home for a natural gas generator. I hope solar is an option but I’m pretty sure it’s still too expensive.
  22. Starting my annual watch of BoB over the Memorial Day weekend. Never gets old. The Greatest Generation indeed.
  23. Then I may need to revisit it. Last September was my heaviest load as I averaged 101 kWh per day. My home is around 3,900 so ft and I have two AC units. My home is fairly new and well insulated. But I think I need to assume at least 24 hours of no sun. We had no sun last Friday after the storm, but by Sat morning it was full sun. I’d welcome your suggestions on solar array and battery size.
  24. They told us with an automated email/voice massage on Sunday evening that power should be restored by EOD yesterday. Nope. We got the same message yesterday evening that it would be restored by end of day today. So far, nothing.
  25. I priced a Tesla solar/battery system a few years ago because my patio home does not have enough room for a natural gas powered generator. I wanted enough battery power to last two days with no sun running both of my AC units in a typical Houston summer. The quote was $80k and a few power guys I know didn’t think it would be feasible because the batteries would take up most of the space in my garage. I’m still without power near Woodway and Potomac in 77057. If I could install a solar/battery system that would meet my needs for $30-40k I’d do it. I’ve been told that the batteries should be coming down in price.
