    Getting old sucks

I’ve probably posted this two or three times over the last several years and on the other site as well, there’s no need to despair about your 60’s and 70’s. Stay fit, lose weight (if needed) and be active and the golden years can be awesome. Read Younger Next Year. It’s a book by a retired NY lawyer and his internist about staying fit into your 80’s. Eat right, exercise and your 60’s and 70’s can be fabulous. Then again, there’s a reason that life expectancy is still mid 70’s.

    Colonoscopy

I had my second one last week. My first was 10 years ago. Propofol is a great thing. I was beginning an awesome dream when I woke up. The prep is way better now than 10 years ago. What amazes me is how painless it is post procedure—especially compared to a digital prostate exam which is about the most unpleasant thing I ever do and the pain lingers for about two days. There is zero discomfort after a colonoscopy, at least for me:

    Getting old sucks

Just had my second one at 62. Two very small polyps were removed (same as at 52) so I’m guessing I’m good for another 10 years. I’m waiting on the follow up. Had propofal and it was nice but not as nice as the first time. Prep is the only unpleasant part.
  4. I was bored several weeks ago and looked up the predictions vs the outcomes since around 2000. Usually they are not way off either way. Knowing the law of averages the forecasters rarely make predictions that are way off the average. The official prediction is usually just a few storms higher or lower than the historical average. And, not surprisingly, the actual number is not way off. Sometimes they really do miss it though. Lately, they really don’t want to be caught way off on the low side so it’s safer to say it will be average to above average in terms of number of named storms. My take away is that they are doing their best to predict it, but they really don’t know.
  5. The front should protect SE Texas for several days. In September, every day without a storm approaching Texas is good news and one day closer to the end.
  6. As for the thread title, I usually suck at homemade pie crust. Sometimes it comes out great but mostly it’s tough and not flaky enough. And I’ve seen and tried all the tips online and from cooking shows. Good news is that Pillsbury Already Made pie crusts and even the frozen Mrs. Smith’s are very good.
  7. I use the Instapot for beans and they cook more evenly if I presoak them all day. You can cook them longer but then I seem to get some beans that are fine and others will turn to mush if I don’t presoak.
  8. That brings back so many memories. Our maid growing up, who was like a second mom to me, made the best pinto beans I’ve ever had. She always used salt pork.
  9. I know, jinx and all, but we actually are below the average number of named storms for this time of year in the Atlantic. An above normal year was forecast. Next 4 weeks are critical.
  10. So long as they don’t wear their baseball cap backwards. Take that to the tennis court. (I’m joking, sort of)
  11. I’ve never skied Highlands or Buttermilk but I need to. Snowmass is my favorite ski area in the country. Been going there since the mid 90’s and it just gets better and better. It has very long ski time with very little lift time. I don’t believe I’ve ever had a lift line of more than 10 minutes and that was just a handful of times. The on mountain restaurants are very good and then there’s Aspen just 12 minutes away. Can’t wait for January when we’ll be back for two weeks. The last two years have been near perfect ski conditions. Hope it continues. And the summer doesn’t suck. We’ll be back in two weeks.
  12. Some timeshares/fractional ownerships are actually good deals. The ones I know about in Aspen and Snowmass have done well and there’s an active buy/sell market for them.
  13. You are asking the right questions. There is so much more I want to add but it’s CR territory.
  14. From the 2nd tee at Snowmass Club. Near perfect weather here in Colorado.
  15. LOL. There are so many fucking trees in places they shouldn’t be. Every major wind event will result in massive power outages. Nobody wants to be serious about trimming trees and vegetation. CenterPoint is lax and homeowners don’t want to cut their precious trees.
  16. Reading the other thread, it seems we have two more seasons. This thing will move very slowly. I thought this season would end with Reyneara (sp?) taking the throne in Kingslanding. They might drag that a full season.
  17. That was a concern. There could be a gap in coverage for bad drainage. In my case, I’m pretty sure it would not have been a “flood” for purposes of flood insurance. It was too specific to my property.
  18. I did not have flood insurance for Harvey and I did not flood. I’m about 2/3 mile south of Buffalo Bayou near Tanglewood. My street barely had standing water during Harvey. I did, however, have a ton of drainage flowing from a neighbour’s property into a drain in my front driveway near my front door and during the heaviest rain it backed up and water was about 6” below my front door. That probably is not a “flood” under the definition of flood in flood insurance policies. I assume that homeowners insurance would have covered water damage caused by a drainage issue. All that said, after Harvey, I have flood insurance. If the Addicks or Barker dam failed, I suspect it would flood as far south as San Felipe. Upstream would be even worse than during Harvey when the dams held.
  19. Never. My wife of 35 years knows that all men find it stimulating to see two attractive women getting after it.
  20. Golf? What’s that? No golf in Houston for a while. This fucking rain just will not end. It’s been crazy all summer. Hope it rains in the Hill Country but we need about 8 weeks of no rain in Houston.
  21. Another inch in the last 2 hours in 77057. This shit needs to go to the Hill Country.
  22. Well, two more inches and still coming down. I hope it rains more where it is needed, but I’ll say it again. Fuck this rain. I want eight weeks of no rain.
  23. His putting stroke sucks but for his age his swing is pretty good. Obligatory no CR. No doubt your post was no CR.
  24. Fuck this rain. Houston is approaching the normal rainfall for the year and it’s still July.

    Getting old sucks

I had a law partner die of that and I keep an eye on it. I also have a known issue with my lower oesophagus and a hiatal hernia. I’m otherwise pretty fit for 62.
