  1. Herbie is merely a pandering bandwagon-jumping douche, but he doesn't hate Texas.  He was merely playing to the crowd in College Station at a time when Texas was an extremely easy target.  I seriously doubt he was subtly trying to intimate that Texas is a racist school while hosting a show from a Klan rally.  If Texas had hired Saban or Urban instead of Strong and immediately returned to the elite, Herbie would have been in the front of the line exalting Texas' decision to fire Mack.

Ohio State fans actually believe that Herbstreit is overly critical of the Buckeyes in an effort to appear objective regarding his alma mater.  It's not exactly a state secret that Herbie attributes his decision to move from Columbus to Nashville to overzealous Buckeye fans instead of as a result of his wife's insistence to remove him from his various mistresses.

Every fanbase of the historically elite programs believes their program is unfairly targeted by one talking head or another.  Herbie and others talk shit about every program in the country that is enduring a rough patch.  It is entirely predictable that he is jumping back on the Texas jock at the first opportunity and he will be the first to slam Alabama and Clemson when their reigns end.

Just in case anyone wasn’t sure, Michigan hasn’t won the big ten since 2004, three years before Lloyd Carr retired. They have not played in any of the 8 conference championship games.

Penn State, Wisconsin, and Michigan State all have 3 conference championships since Michigan’s last.

The third Wisconsin title is a bit silly given they actually finished third in their division (4-4 in conference) but for tattoos and pedos

  4. I thought the lists were relatively well done although they suffer from both a recency bias and a desire to please everyone.

The Sooner Schooner as the No. 1 tradition in college football is idiotic, although placing OU as only the 10th best program in college football history is outstanding.

They pandered to A&M a bit by including the Dixie Chicken and College Station on the food and college town lists, but I can appreciate the desire of the SI editors to avoid inflaming (pun intended) aggy.

The Oregon love struck me as the strangest aspect of the lists.  The stuffed Oregon Duck ranked above Bevo?  The best mascot rankings are a two horse race involving Bevo and Uga and we all saw how that turned out in the Sugar Bowl.  Similarly, ranking the Oregon helmet at 4 in front of Texas is simply wrong.  The best helmets are Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State, Texas and everyone else.

Otherwise, Texas was dealt with very fairly.  4th in the all-time program rankings is quite generous.  One other quibble is Auburn-Alabama as the number one rivalry.  I've never bought into it with Auburn as such a little brother.  I'm sure they would have ranked Michigan-Ohio State number one if Ohio State hadn't won the last 20 and Alabama wasn't in the midst of such a ridiculous run.

I was there over the weekend.  I lived there in the mid 90's and I don't recognize Austin anymore.  Between the homeless cities and the scooters I was floored.  I come to Austin often but way up north, I don't normally go into downtown.  It was depressing.

It is beginning to become an issue for convention location selection due to complaints from attendees.  Still just a minor negative consideration as opposed to being the primary reason for not selecting the city like SF is experiencing.

  6. An update on David Duval. Turns out his octuple-bogey 13 on 7 wasn’t a 13 after all. It was a 14. A nonuple bogey, then. And that’s a round of 91. Still not quite as bad as Ian Baker-Finch’s effort at Troon in 1997, but that’s a low bar for a former champion to clear. So here’s what happened: he lost his first two tee shots, then sent his third into deep rough. At which point he played the wrong ball, a mistake only discovered up on the green. So he had to go back to the tee having been hit with three penalties for lost balls, plus a two-stroke penalty for playing the wrong ball. He teed off for the fourth time, and took six from there. All of which adds up to 14.

Holy shit, did David Duvall really shoot a 13 on one hole today?

Thanks David. Now then, before I get back to business, a word on David Duval. You may remember his eight at the 5th. Well, he’s followed that up with a 13 (!) at 7. Details are a little sketchy, but it would seem he ended up hitting such a bad provisional off the tee that a second was required ... and then he played the wrong one. For a while, he was reported to have run up 15 on the hole, but that’s been revised down by the match referee. Just a octuple bogey, then! By way of comparison, the biggest number on Maurice Flitcroft’s infamous card of 121 in the 1976 qualifiers was a 12 (though to be fair, there was a question mark beside that one). Anyway, the former champ has since dropped another couple of strokes, and is currently +13 through 10. Conclusive proof, if you required it, that 2001 is an awfully long time ago.

The United States of America is about catering to white people.

    This is not a surprise.

It's about catering to elites, which predominantly consist of white people.  The elites care as much about poor whites as they do the poor of other races.  There are more white children living in poverty in the U.S. than any other race but keep obscuring reality by pivoting to identity politics you divisive cunt.

We are giving them credit for participating in a significantly more popular and competitive sport that generates significantly more revenue than women's soccer.

So should the Bahamian men's team make more than the USWNT?

Obviously, if they make the World Cup.  Since they won't and no one pays shit to watch their games, they make virtually nothing.

  10. Good lord.  Professional men and women soccer players aren't comparable at all.  The female GK making a feeder team was a publicity stunt.  Every current D-1 men's GK is better than Hope Solo in her prime.  It has been beaten to death, but the best women in the world can't compete with regionally elite 15-16 year old boys.  The differences in strength, speed and agility are massive.  Girls can and do play with boys until around 12.  My 10 year old is currently at a camp where the elite girls and boys are playing together and the best girls can hold their own in almost every respect.  Once the testosterone hits though, its fucking over.

No, McCormick place isn't the "South Side" and most of the trouble spots are miles further south even further south than Comiskey Park.

I think a gold medal in 2020 would be a send off for Rapinoe, Lloyd, Sauerbrunn and Krieger. If Heath's club form stays sharp over the next couple of years I could see her coming back in 2023. Press may stick around because if Rapinoe retires she becomes a starter until someone younger unseats her. US Soccer is going to try and keep Alex Morgan around as long as they can. They will try to keep her playing until she's 40.

Agreed.  Morgan will make millions over the next 4 years if she keeps playing.

    Megan Rapinoe:
    - Led team w/ 20 chances created and 14 from open play
    - 4th player & 1st American to win WWC Golden Ball & Golden Boot (Sawa, Marta, Prinz)
    - 2nd player to start 3 WWC finals (Prinz)

    Alex Morgan:
    - Led team with 21 shots (19 inside the box)
    - Fouled 13 times, five more than any other teammate and fourth-most in the tournament
    - Committed a team-high 9 fouls

    Tobin Heath:
    - Led team with 25 take-ons, successful at a 52% clip (about average)

    Rose Lavelle:
    - 17 take-ons, successful at a 71% clip (avg was 55%)
    - 12 successful take-ons, one behind Heath for most on the team
    - 11 tackles, third-most on the team

    Sam Mewis:
    - 11 chances created from open play, second-most on team
    - 14 tackles, second-most on the team
    - 7 interceptions, most on team
    - 43 recoveries, third-most on team
    - Won a team-high 15 aerial duels in the defensive half

    Julie Ertz:
    - Won possession in the middle third most often on the team (28)
    - 44 recoveries, second-most on team
    - Won a team-high 15 aerial duels in the defensive half

    Kelley O'Hara:
    - 45% of her touches were in the attacking half
    - Team-high 80% completion rate on passes to the attacking third
    - Third-highest expected assists on the team (1.2)
    - My vote for the USWNT player you least want to face in a Death Match

    Becky Sauerbrunn:
    - Led the team with 21 clearances
    - Won 72% of her duels, second-best rate on the team

    Abby Dahlkemper:
    - Played 622 of 630 minutes, most of any U.S. field player
    - Stretched the field by completing 14 forward passes of 30+ meters (no other U.S. field player had more than 8), at a 33% clip that was right about average

    Crystal Dunn:
    - Led the team with 477 touches
    - 80 touches per 90 minutes were most among the top 11 players in minutes
    - Team-high 28 tackles, double any other player
    - Team high 45 recoveries
    - Won a team-high 73% of her duels (50-50 balls)

    Alyssa Naeher:
    - 12 saves in 7 games, including 4 saves vs France and 3 vs England
    - Saved almost two goals above expected based on shots on target

  13. The 30+ players are the fruits of the 99 team.  The younger players are the product of the restructuring of girls club soccer following the 2007 World Cup.

The player pool is indeed very deep but there is a valid concern that too many of the older players will try to stick around for the 2023 World Cup.  It will be tough for players to leave because the USWNT is both their platform and the source of their income, directly and indirectly.  That said, I expect many of the 30+ players will retire after the 2020 Olympics and only a couple will make it to 2023.

  14. The Dutch aren't the same team without a healthy Martens and they have been very fortunate throughout the tournament.

Their group stage performance wasn't impressive (2H injury time winner against NZ, late goal against Cameroon sealed a 2-1 win in which Cameroon was all over them in the second half and a 2-1 win over Canada in which Canada was the dominant side after the early goals).

The knockout has been the same story. Their win against Japan was probably the most against the run of play game in the tournament.  They were fortunate to get upstarts Italy in the quarters instead of Australia or Brazil and Sweden in the SFs instead of Germany.

If Ellis doesn't hold back the attack, the U.S. could put up 4 or 5 on them.  Japan sliced them open at will.  If I was ranking the teams I would want to avoid in the final, I would probably place them sixth behind the U.S., France, England, Japan and Germany.
