I'm currently listening to 12/11/79 right now as a result of that forum.  Outstanding.  I'm going to have to book mark that place.  It may take the rest of my life to listen to all of the recommendations.  I'm pleasantly surprised that there isn't any snobbery about the different eras on there.

Wait until you dig a little deeper.  There is definitely some good-natured snobbery, particularly with respect to 72-74.  There is also a bit of an over the top anti-77 sentiment there by some of the regulars.

There are some dudes with pretty deep connections to the Dead who post there and there are independent threads on Dave's Picks and other Dead related topics.  That is just the general thread.  The depth of knowledge is almost frightening.  Some real musicians as well.

  2. All London clubs hate Arsenal (historically the most successful and popular London club) and United fans hate Arsenal because of the EPL rivalry in the 90s and 00s (by far the most intense rivalry in EPL history).  That really just leaves Liverpool as an EPL team with a historically large fan base in the US that doesn't actively dislike Arsenal.  Even City has a weird relationship with Arsenal because of the transfers in the early oil days.

With respect to Liverpool, U.S. supporters of London clubs have a generally ambivalent attitude regarding Liverpool aside from a brief Chelsea/Liverpool interlude because United and later City were the real threats for trophies.  For all Klopp has done to turn Liverpool around, they have won 1 trophy since 2006 and were generally an afterthought in the EPL title race before then.

As for the discussion here, imo the content on surly pales in comparison to shaggy on every board, particularly compared to the shaggybevo days.  You can debate the reasons why.

Good read, but doesn't say enough about CJK5H.

"In the wake of negative headlines from the Leach drama and the untrue claims about James killing prostitutes that still exist in his Google profile, James theorized to Texas Monthly that there’s “a group of people who would like to see me come down.” He added: “They don’t like that I’ve been a dad and I’ve been there for my kids. They don’t like that I’ve been in the spotlight but haven’t stumbled.”

Then there was this quote, told to the New York Times by an unnamed U.S. golfer following the Reed-fueled Ryder Cup drama in Paris: "He has no clue how to play team golf. I saw firsthand how bad of a team player he was. Eleven players understood the concept of team golf and only one didn’t. Unfortunately, that one proved to be too costly for the team to overcome."

I would love to know who is responsible for this pathetic quote.

Atlanta's financial commitment could see them become a dominant team in the MLS for the coming decade.

Atlanta has certainly made full use of Designated Players but its total payroll for 2018 was a relatively modest $11.3 million (9th in the league).  Toronto blew the rest of the league away with a total payroll of $26.2 million, almost $9 million more than LA Galaxy in second place at $17.5 million.  Meanwhile, 13 teams in the league (including Dallas at $9.3 and Houston at $5.7) had total payrolls of less than $10 million.

The league wants more payroll compression among its teams.  Simply eliminating one DP slot will drop Toronto's payroll from 4.7x Houston to 3.5x Houston.

  6. There is one South American in the MLS currently getting paid more than $2.5 million (Piatti at MTL).

MLS salary rules simply don't allow for a significant influx of high level South American talent, particularly if the number of DPs is permanently reduced to 2 this offseason as expected.

  7. The rules work how MLS wants them to work at any given moment.

MLS and its owners accurately view ATL and Seattle as outliers and are structuring the salary cap based on the realistic capabilities of a team that can average 20,000 in attendance, a number more than half of the teams in the league don't achieve.

Sorry Zep, wasn't meant to be gloating. I will say that Blank is throwing around serious money to get major talent, I can only hope this continues across the league and raise the talent pool here.

There is only so much a team can do within the salary cap confines of MLS.  Given that most owners want to reduce the number of DPs from 3 to 2, this signing will remain a significant outlier for the foreseeable future.

If Nick Saban quit tomorrow and personally endorsed him, Urban Meyer would never be considered.   Alabama would rather have Bear Bryant's hat than that unctuous weasel, 97% winning percentage be damned.

Alabama is definitely the first place that comes to mind that prioritizes integrity over winning.  Well . . . Alabama or Oklahoma
