  1. I haven't seen this explained anywhere, so hoping someone can clarify. How do the senate and house voucher bills impact the basic allotment? If the allotment is $6500 and vouchers are $10,000, does the private school get $10K and the public school lose $6500? Or does the public school keep the allotment?
  2. Pretty powerful opinion from the judge denying Trump's request for an emergency stay in the Abrego Garcia case. https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.ca4.178400/gov.uscourts.ca4.178400.8.0.pdf
  3. I should have said found probable cause, not contempt yet.
  4. Boasberg is now the first judge to find Trump's DOJ in contempt. Buckle up.
  5. Aaaand....looks like DOJ has missed the extended deadline
  6. I saw this handy chart that helps illustrate the point Furman is making. I wish there was a column that showed the tariff situation pre-Trump.
  7. And, not surprising at all, Stephen Miller is out there just lying and claiming this was a victory at the Supreme Court.
  8. The judge in the Abrego Garcia case quickly updated her orders last night. DOJ has a deadline in about 20 minutes to explain what steps they've taken so far and what other steps they plan to take.
  9. For those not following closely, after the Supreme Court ruling yesterday, two different lawsuits were filed in NY and TX on the deportations of Venezuelans under the Alien Enemies Act. TX judge has blocked deportations from El Valle, NY hearing is underway.
  10. The attorney who was arguing the government's case against Kilmar Abrego Garcia has been placed on indefinite leave for not lying to the court with greater enthusiasm. https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/doj-places-attorney-leave-after-struggling-maryland-migrant/story?id=120526466 Here's an example of what might have gotten him in trouble:
  11. Don't have access to the article, so maybe someone else can share the details. https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2025/04/05/irs-tax-data-immigration-enforcement/
  12. Fake? Please
  13. Sorry if this has been posted already, but I missed this earlier in the week. I don't know anything about Oren Cass, but I thought this was a really good interview that Jon Stewart gave exploring the recent evolution of right-wing economic philosophies. The one thing I didn't like is that Stewart didn't press him on defense spending for Japan, Germany, etc. Why do we want them to increase their defense spending? Is the goal for the US to reduce investment in our own military? I don't think that's what Conservatives actually want. I think what they want is to keep the US military where it is but have others buy lots of military equipment from us. The current approach is a great way to make sure that doesn't happen.
  14. Yeah, I'm not really sold that trying to act normal is the way to go for the Democrats. I'd like to see them test the water with bat shit crazy. Put stuff out there like, "our new policy will be to eat the billionaires!" When the Fox News talking heads clutch their pearls over this, just double down. "We are not joking. We will give every billionaire a choice to donate their wealth or be entered in the Eat My Ass lottery. The winner will be humanely euthanized, cured, smoked and sold in travel size packs of jerky at Love's Travel Centers across the country." "We are overjoyed to see Elon plumping up, go to Democrats.org to vote for your favorite billionaire flavors to rub on his ass. We have teriyaki, cajun, honey bourbon and many others!"
  15. In case anyone missed it, in response to the Salvadoran man that ICE admits was deported by mistake, our VP chimed in with lies and deflection: https://www.newsweek.com/jd-vance-ice-error-man-deported-2053429 The guy was never charged with any crime, let alone convicted of being a gang member. An immigration judge determined he would face threats from gangs if deported to El Salvador.
  16. I've thought about running a thought experiment with some family members. I'd like them to finish the sentence, "We know we're not witnessing the rise of an authoritarian regime in the United States because if we were we would see ________." I'm a little scared of what their answers could be.

  18. The gal in the Texas Monthly article is also a Longhorn.
