  1. Anyone have a recommendation for a reliable handyman in DFW (Richardson specifically)? Here's the deal...I have an L-shaped maple butcher block countertop (~35 sq. ft.) that I need sanded down and refinished. Finish is a straight forward one-step product (wipe on, buff off after 5 minutes). I would do it myself, but I want someone to handle it while our family is out on vacation so the finish has time to cure and I don't have to deal with complaints from the family about the kitchen being unusable. So far, I've had one handyman ghost me and 2 others tell me they don't do that kind of work. Any recommendations? I'm also thinking about reaching out to flooring contractors to see if they'd take the job.
  2. I think @Wally Pryor is referring to this news that there's going to be a second marching band formed that won't play The Eyes, in addition to the current LHB. https://music.utexas.edu/news/changes-expand-options-access-diversity-university-bands
  3. The only reason people are desperate enough to break the law is because they resent rich people? Do you actually believe this? I'm pretty sure we'd have law breakers even if all the rich people suddenly vanished. For some reason, this opinion of yours feels a lot like "they hate us for our freedom". 4. More language than most of the Marvel movies. My 10 year old was pretty freaked out during all the parts about kidnapping, enslaving and murdering children. There also wasn't nearly as much humor in this one. My kids (6 & 10) probably wouldn't have been into the plot at all if they weren't already into Black Widow. If it didn't have there Avengers tie in, I would pass on this for kids. Sent from my Pixel 5 using Tapatalk
  5. Dad put me in charge of cooking pork steaks for 12 on his Rec Tec. Gave them some rub and grilled them at 400F to start, then into the sauce bath to braise around 275F. After about 90 minutes they went back on the grill to set the sauce. Like pork candy.
  6. Apparently Spartan isn't making the 90 day eradicator any more. They're trying to sell a 30 day version for the same price. This is because the product has been found to not work and there's a lawsuit pending. https://colinpurrington.com/2021/03/spartan-mosquito-eradicator-vs-pro-tech/ Sent from my Pixel 5 using Tapatalk
  7. We have a small one in our bedroom: https://www.amazon.com/hOmeLabs-Dehumidifier-Dehumidifiers-Basements-Continuous/dp/B073VBWKJZ/ Even those small units have a hose hookup they'll drain automatically. You just have to have a drain to run it to.
  8. I'm looking for recommendations for someone to handle a smaller project in Richardson. I have a detached garage (~600 sqft.) that needs to get torn down and replaced along with replacing the driveway, installing a new circular drive and figuring out landscaping (deck/patio, fence, pergola, drainage, irrigation). I already have plans for the garage and driveway drawn up by an architect, but will need help with the landscape design portions. The garage/driveway also has a tricky retaining wall/elevation situation that's going to need an engineer involved. I'm hoping to find a one-stop shop to handle all of this. Any recommendations are appreciated. Happy to share more info if it would be helpful

  10. But economist aren't saying "because of stimulus and minimum wage." DonkeyCigars is the only one saying that and it's why this is neither a fair nor an apolitical point. You asked if you're creating an original opinion and claimed to just be quoting the NYT. But the article you reference (the exact quote you posted!) says, "Short-lived bursts of inflation that are tied to ... stimulus-check spending wouldn’t do lasting damage to the economy". So again, you're not honestly evaluating all opinions offered by experts, you're manufacturing your own BS political crisis. And it's fine to float your own hypothesis here. But if your premise is that temporary stimulus and temporary minimum wage increases are going to cause a long-term inflationary trend, you should show your work.
  11. I guess this is a good spot to post this. I randomly stumbled across these videos of Goliad Farms and their recovery from the February storm. Owner is a Longhorn (seems like he should be on Surly). I hadn't heard of them before but looks like they got absolutely crushed by the storm (their well froze over, could find heaters, had to abandon a greenhouse). They have a ton of videos on their YouTube channel showing all the damage and their recovery efforts. I'll post a couple more here.

  13. Not to rain on your parade, but are you thinking your mom invented beanie weenies? I mean, if she did, let's get her a Nobel prize. But I'm pretty sure this is a really common kids meal and has been for decades. And to your point, yes, they are best with Van Camp's. I enjoyed introducing my kids to this one. 15. I grew up in the Midwest and there are a number of things my half-Mexican wife from New Braunfels was disturbed by. Early in our marriage, nearly 15 years ago, I got sick with flu or strep or something. My wife asked what comfort food I wanted. I told her to call my mom and get the recipe for soup casserole. After a WTF? look, she did. It's basically a shortcut shepherd's pie. Browned ground beef mixed with Campbell's alphabet soup and some canned vegetables ( usually green beans). Then it all goes in a casserole, gets covered with mashed potatoes and baked. It really is phenomenal. Wife and kids all love it and it's in it regular rotation. Another one from mom is salmon lasagna. Just a basic lasagna recipe but with canned salmon instead of meat. Sounds gross, but the salmon with red sauce is really good. My wife had to admit this one was good too. Then there are a couple from my grandparents. A holiday tradition is braised red cabbage (cabbage, bacon, onion, apples, vinegar). My grandfather would also make braunschweiger spread by just mixing braunschweiger with chili sauce until it was a smooth spread/dip. Kids love that one too. And the cottage cheese comment above reminded me, mom got me in the habit of putting a spoonful of cottage cheese alongside a plate of spaghetti. Not all the time, but if we remember. That's another one my wife came around to. Sent from my Pixel 5 using Tapatalk
  16. The one thing I learned today: I need a better umbrella for smoking through a tornado watch. Ribs were good though.
  17. Can someone explain how enforcement of this actually works? Based on that Texas Tribune article, there won't really be any enforcement by the state. There are no criminal penalties. The only enforcement is via allowing people to sue abortion providers? Are we going to have private companies start popping up whose business model is to find women getting abortions and then sue the doctors, nurses and counselors?
  18. Just end public schools, duh.
  19. Are you saying we're already at the point that businesses should assume everyone is vaccinated? I mean, we have data that says less than 40% of Texans have gotten at least one shot. To me, we're clearly in the range of "best to assume people aren't vaccinated." I don't know that there's a magic number. For me, it might be reasonable to start assuming everyone is vaccinated once we're in the 70-90% range.

  21. Not if states like Arkansas get their way and restrict gender affirming healthcare for trans children. NPR covered this in a lot of depth yesterday https://www.sciencefriday.com/segments/gender-affirming-healthcare/. Puberty blockers would delay puberty so that families have time to make an informed decision before the child gets hit with hormones that drive permanent physiological changes. These blockers aren't permanent and they're not hormone treatments. But they are banned under the Arkansas law. It just shows how uninformed and misguided some of these attempts at legislating really are.
  22. I don't think it's as sinister as you're making it out to be. The reports immediately after the shooting were based on statements from the girl's family that she had already dropped the knife. The video showing differently wasn't released until later. Maybe the media shouldn't have included those elements in the stories until they could verify with video. But that's different than claiming the media saw one thing in the video and decided to publish the opposite (i.e. lies). Like @Nice Guy Eddie said, this is more a problem of the media racing to get something out to get clicks than it is a problem of active distortion. At least in this case.
