  4. So? At worst, measles is merely fatal. It’s not a big deal.

I wonder whether that revenue (at least the part attributable to THC products) is offset by lost liquor sales. It’s anecdotal, but I’ve heard a lot of people recently say that they’ve stopped or cut way back on drinking and replaced it with weed. It costs, what, maybe $5-10 to get high? A typical social drinker could easily drop 10x that on cocktails in a night.

So you’re saying we’ll get a THC ban, but the Texas Senate will give us an unenthusiastic BJ later that night?

Texas is so fucking stupid. I’ve been saying for years that the current legal regime was fucked up. Without regulation, it was relatively easy for kids to get their hands on shady, untested THC products. The solution was obvious: legalize weed (or at least maintain legality of hemp-based products) and regulate the industry. You know, like sensible states do. But Texans don’t do regulation because we value freedom and hate big government and all that jazz. So instead, we just straight-up ban the shit, blind to the glaring irony and deaf to the laughter of rational observers.
  8. So you say you used to work as an engineering writer, huh?
  9. Fuck you, fascist.
  10. Y’all, it’s time to acknowledge that our beloved alma mater has become a fascist shithole.
  11. This continues to be the worst “Leopards eating faces” genre. Structurally, it doesn’t fit the metaphor. And it’s gross to express schadenfreude in response to the murder of innocent civilians.

  13. Welcome to The Lanai. Can I make you a mai tai?
  14. I’ve come to this conclusion recently about many of my once-favorite extended family members. I’ve basically cut off an entire side of my extended family. Always thought they were cool and fun and generally good people. Now it’s clear that they’re a bunch of shallow, selfish, religious zealot assholes. It’s depressing. But you know what? My wife, my kids, my in-laws, my parents, my friends, and most of my aunts and cousins on the other side of the family are super cool and good, thoughtful people. And their happiness means more to me than maintaining civility with a bunch of idiot fascists I used to enjoy.

  16. There’s a shit ton of smoke in the air in Austin.
  17. I know “Fear of the Dark” and “Wickerman” are crowdpleasers. But those albums are not remotely up to the level of Iron Maiden, Killers, Piece of Mind, Powerslave, or Somewhere in Time. I was still in my Maiden phase when Fear of the Dark released. It was better than No Prayer for the Dying, but just barely. Those two tapes got minimal play from me from the jump. Every band peters out at some point. Maiden had a long hot streak in the studio and I’m glad they’re still touring (and playing a heavy rotation of their classics).
  18. It’s crazy to me how popular they still are. In the late 80s, I was obsessed with Maiden. But literally no one else I knew listened to them. I figured their glory days were well behind them. Which, in a sense, was correct: they were pretty much done writing and recording top notch music by that point. Seventh Son (and arguably, Somewhere in Time) was the last classic Maiden album and almost everything since then has been crap. But they’ve grown into a massive live act and cultural phenomenon in the ensuing decades.
  19. A few things: 1. Wasn’t Hanania very recently a MAGA villain? Has he pulled a face turn in recent weeks? 2. This professor was (maybe still is) a fucking dipshit. See #3. However, it’s good to see people waking up (even if it’s too late to avoid a lot of pain). 3. So many otherwise rational adults overreacted to what should have been completely unsurprising boundary-testing by college students. I’ve tried to explain to so many people that performative wokeness is an ultimately harmless (albeit sometimes annoying) fad. But these unimaginative dipshits, swaddled in the false security of normalcy bias, insisted that a bunch of oversensitive college kids were a far bigger threat to their freedoms than an openly fascist would-be dictator and his cadre of anti-intellectual Christian nationalists. They’re in the FO stage now.
  20. I’ve stayed at two high end resorts in Punta Cana. One had top notch service and staff. The other place gave me the creeps.
