  1. While I'm at it (and this is more lower class than middle, but still): https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/jul/24/us-federal-minimum-wage-rev-william-barber
  2. Whether you are pro or anti-Bernie ( I feel he is a lonely voice shouting against the winds) $886 billion for the Pentagon is so ludricious.
  3. Everthing WhatTheBuck wrote was correct and that was just the tip of the iceberg. How many members of PNAC would have been in the Gore administration? There is no right thread for you to continue this nonsense.
  4. Oh man why did I let myself get sucked back into this? Him writing “ideology ahead of returns” makes me feel like that newscaster in Scanners.
  5. I somewhat get what you're saying, but Hunter is not an elected official and the hearing was allegedly about the IRS.
  6. Similar to my sentiments on the open corruption of the SC, I do feel like there was a time where this kind of thing would have caused real outrage and she would have been booted. Now it is shrug and move on to the next ridiculous thing. A congressperson waving dick picks in public for revenge should have repercusssions. But it won't. It feels beyond surreal.
  7. I heard that line my whole life it seems. Turns out there are places where a moderate amount of snow and occasionally shoveling your driveway beats not wanting to go outside for 6 months out of the year. Personal preference of course. Perhaps eventually this isn’t true, but as it stands now the choice doesn’t have to be blast furnace versus Arctic blizzard. There are still some nice four season in betweens out there.
  8. You mentioned the 80s series. One that really messed with me from that run was called “need to know.” I had to google the plot to find the episode name. Frances McDormand was in it but at the time I wouldn’t know her name.
  9. Now the rapture folks want to kill you first just to make sure. we are the smartest people. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/jul/16/chris-gloninger-tv-weather-man-climate-crisis
  10. Gen Xer who was raised believing that God wouldn't let man destroy the earth unless Jesus raptured all us believers and who cares then because heaven was going to be awesome! So I didn't worry about nuclear war because that would be silly.
  11. I am obviously very behind the times. I'm sorry to read of his passing, he was a nice poster.
  12. I should have read the thread quicker, sorry. Yeah explained here: https://www.thedailybeast.com/how-qanon-became-obsessed-with-adrenochrome-an-imaginary-drug-hollywood-is-harvesting-from-kids Not just Hunter. Monster's inc as well. And yeah, it was pretty obvious Hunter was making that stuff up. But then these people believe things like this: Hunter lives....
  13. I'm pretty out of the loop. Did they really watch (I know they didn't read the book) Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and come up with a conspiracy theory based off of it?
  14. Wound up getting this and putting away the apple watch.
  15. Somewhat this. I am over 50, but have been in the IT/tech world for a long...well I'm over 50. I'm also pretty convinced social media and our slot machine phones are the devil. Battling it with my kids these days. The addictive nature of all this shit is unreal. Now to browse surly while being a hypocrite.
  16. As a gen Xer it certainly feels that at one point in my life this open bribery would have had repercussions. Maybe I'm naive, and maybe I'm mis-remembering my younger years. But that this corruption is out in the open and there is no real outrage over it is amazing but at the same time now feels depressingly normal. Perhaps this is the gaslighting effect on us all? Given the so-called highest court in the land status, you would think that said court being so openly and brazenly corrupt would bring a civlized country to a halt until something was done.
  17. Had a big long rant all queued up, but I'm deciding I'll go with the everything's broken and it isn't going to get fixed response. The effective crushing of the middle continues. I do wonder if in my lifetime we see the eventual end run of all this and whether it leads to rebellion or a fully subservient near slave class. Or if any of that matters because we all burn up by then.
  18. What gets me is being charged a cleaning fee but being told to do laundry, dishes, e.t.c. I used to enjoy Airbnbs as at one point in time they were seemingly more affordable or the same price as chain hotel stays. And with a young family having a place with no shared walls was nice. Now I am back to mostly hotels as the pricing seems more up front and generally a lot more affordable. And I believe I read once that many Airbnbs are actually owned by corporations anyway. Edit: they are certainly not collapsing where I live, but tourism is a key industry here.
  19. Apple Watch series 4. Fitness tracking, and I use the timer function quite a bit (making coffee, pizza, e.t.c.). Cellular function has come in handy and often use Apple Pay with it as well. All of that said there are days I want to disconnect completely so I have been looking at some Seiko 5s and g-shocks.
  20. Al that burning up is going to make you hate, kid?
