  1. As a gen Xer it certainly feels that at one point in my life this open bribery would have had repercussions. Maybe I'm naive, and maybe I'm mis-remembering my younger years. But that this corruption is out in the open and there is no real outrage over it is amazing but at the same time now feels depressingly normal. Perhaps this is the gaslighting effect on us all? Given the so-called highest court in the land status, you would think that said court being so openly and brazenly corrupt would bring a civlized country to a halt until something was done.
  2. Had a big long rant all queued up, but I'm deciding I'll go with the everything's broken and it isn't going to get fixed response. The effective crushing of the middle continues. I do wonder if in my lifetime we see the eventual end run of all this and whether it leads to rebellion or a fully subservient near slave class. Or if any of that matters because we all burn up by then.
  3. What gets me is being charged a cleaning fee but being told to do laundry, dishes, e.t.c. I used to enjoy Airbnbs as at one point in time they were seemingly more affordable or the same price as chain hotel stays. And with a young family having a place with no shared walls was nice. Now I am back to mostly hotels as the pricing seems more up front and generally a lot more affordable. And I believe I read once that many Airbnbs are actually owned by corporations anyway. Edit: they are certainly not collapsing where I live, but tourism is a key industry here.
  4. Apple Watch series 4. Fitness tracking, and I use the timer function quite a bit (making coffee, pizza, e.t.c.). Cellular function has come in handy and often use Apple Pay with it as well. All of that said there are days I want to disconnect completely so I have been looking at some Seiko 5s and g-shocks.
  5. Al that burning up is going to make you hate, kid?
  6. https://www.msnbc.com/the-beat-with-ari/watch/trump-s-tv-confessions-pave-path-to-prison-jack-smith-sends-trump-his-own-interviews-in-new-filing-184190021804 I'm in the he'll never be in prison crowd, but his own interviews being used as evidence against him is delicious.
  7. I have no idea why i can't get that formatting correct. Sorry, but yeah, get off Twitter, really.

  9. This one was mentioned earlier in the thread. Some more details. https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/law-justice/seattle-couple-identified-as-2-killed-in-gorge-amphitheatre-shooting/
  10. I'm wondering if they got the plans for this thing by answering one of those ads in the back of Popular Science.
  11. I remembered the story about Greta Van uh, T blasting him on Twitter and him getting busted. But it took some time to recall. Then I completely forgot who he was again, and still don't quite understand how he has a following at all. I guess being out of touch and old isn't always a bad thing.
  12. If I'm missing the joke I apologize, but it really isn't.
  13. clicked the youtube link. they were navigating via text message? no gracias.

  15. As you know I left in 2019 for Oregon. And no, not going to post my weather forecast. But my last few years in ATX I enjoyed visiting this place in Wimberly: https://www.cityofwimberley.com/202/Blue-Hole-Regional-Park
  16. Some people don’t get the idea of truly enjoying being outside versus being tough enough to be outside.
  17. Constant consumption of the perpetual outrage machines tends to have an impact.
  18. I read Blood Meridian and No Country For Old Men. My challenge in reading Blood Meridian wasn't the violence, but instead what I would call the 'thickness' of it. Very dense, many words I could not find in a dictionary and the whole punctuation thing. It was obviously great, but it was a challenging read and I was releived when I was finished with it. He wouldn't make my personal list of favorite authors. But I recognize his greatness and his skilll. RIP.
  19. Pretty much this. Been using Apollo for what feels like a long time, sad to see it go. Been on reddit a long time, and kept trimming down the subreddits I follow to basically hobbies, dad jokes, and some regional subreddits. That stated, I've been feeling like for some time it has been something I needed to basically quit wasting time on. However, I find some of the best 'how to' and adivce/reviews on products is typically found searching reddit. Will miss that. During all the talk of the API issue this article by Cory Doctorow got posted a few times: https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/21/potemkin-ai/#hey-guys It is a long but good read on why everything internet related goes to shit eventually.
  20. This. Died a rich old man. Probably left a large inheritance.
