  1. Same, if I'm honest. Nice house, btw. Also, didn't mean to completely derail thread. My point is while there are great reasons to go live somewhere else, if one is moving primarily for political reasons I'm not sure just leaving Texas is going far enough. Edit: Although legal weed, established mail in voting, and a mostly (mostly) nut free State legislature is kind of nice.
  2. I'm not actually counting on being 'able' to retire. But at some point the ageism will catch up to me I'm sure. I should probably get back to working on my Spanish (wife is fluent). Or seemingly Portuguese. Portugal seems to be making a 'retire here' push lately.
  3. I have posted it too many times but I left Texas at the tail end of 2019 having lived there all my life. Left Austin specifically. I chose Bend, OR and put a bid in on a house exactly when Covid started shutting everything down. At the time we panicked because plenty were predicting a housing crash. Instead prices have shot up so much I couldn’t afford to buy the house we are in. I love it here, and am grateful every day for the life I have. There are some “but’s.” You will find it is harder to make good friends. You don’t have the shared history of your long time friends to lean on. Sure, you can make acquaintances. But deep friendships? Challenging, and Covid didn’t help. I am lucky in that I consider my nuclear family my best friends. But still, would be nice to have a pal or two to really hang out with. If you are moving for political reasons, well yeah Texas is awful. But there is plenty of crazy/stupid everywhere. And that State government you might be OK with is an election cycle or two from changing. Also, the Supreme Court is going to seriously wreck this country over the next few years, imo. So there won’t be a place to hide. Texas weather was maybe a bigger factor for me than politics at the time. While I love it here, I am have no idea where we go when retirement age hits. I would look heavily at stable governments with universal health care. I am pretty terrified of some health misfortune bankrupting my family one day.
  4. But but a Dem Mayor is a dumbass too! Everyone I call a leftist must agree with him!
  5. Yeah, why should he hold his breath when it’s just like the flu? Besides he just needs to put some disinfectant up his body and shine an ultraviolet light on himself and he’ll be fine.
  6. good tip. I get by them as well, but have noted others do not.
  7. "U.S. Has Far Higher Covid Death Rate Than Other Wealthy Countries" https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2022/02/01/science/covid-deaths-united-states.html If you need to bypass the paywall: https://archive.is/i7CX2
  8. Chess club has gone too far.
  9. If you only saw that from one guy, then we'll just agree to disagree. I'm not going to quote all the posts here. It was an admitted mistake on my part to even enter the thread.
  10. No more "Southern Cross" for me it seems. At least on Spotify. Ah well. I do find it amusing that if you go the Apple Music or Tidal homepages that the first artists they put in your face are all the ones who bailed on Spotify.
  11. Its not worth it. @Celery Man posted a pretty sane response and the dimwits think they have some kind of point because Lobo asked about the thread being "CR'd." They're too stupid to argue with, so I just dished out some middle fingers to Treynumbersdummy.
  12. Good lord the DT is a cesspool. Nominate changing it to FoxNewsDaily or something. Dumbass one posts a news story about happiness in the USA. Story itself directly points to the pandemic. Then all the chimps start crying "CR" the moment anyone discusses exactly what the article is about. I only went in there to see how the ice storm stuff was affecting ya'll. So my fault for clicking on any other thread I guess.
  13. If Playboy Carti pulls his albums I'm going to be pissed!
  14. Yeah. I do feel like this thread could have been started just about any time, really. Hell, could have been on a dial up bbs back in the 80s and been accurate.
  15. Found a comment kind of expressing that: and another: These are unsourced comments, so I obvs can't verify the numbers. But the train of thought makes sense to me. Which, again, is why politics is so depressing.
  16. I also wonder @Sbbruin if your taxes would be off set by the single payer itself. Take out costs of insurance and say an ER visit or two, and then compare to taxes. Right? Or wrong? Then there is economic impact of people who can't afford health care. I'm sure that's derogatory somehow. But again, I don't believe anyone rebels against their corporate overlords. Not in significant numbers anyway.
  17. You apparently know more than me. But I have to tell you, whenever I hear anyone toss out costs, I tend to personally wonder how we can afford other things. I wonder how much money health care lobbyists spend, for example. How much the privatized prison system makes. I don't know. I wonder how politicians go in usually around middle class to upper middle class and somehow get rich(er). I know I'm tilting at windmills. I would even admit to being naïve, except that I don't expect anything seriously good to happen in terms of politics.
  18. Source is apparently a Marxist. Yet....
  19. Coincidentally just came across this on Reddit: https://www.psypost.org/2022/02/new-research-suggests-a-startling-number-of-americans-have-contemplated-suicide-because-of-politics-62452 Very off topic to this thread, but probably in agreement w/your post, so thought you might find it interesting.
  20. Oh shit, its your favorite wall of text quotes again, which have nothing to do with what I said.
  21. I actually agree with you on this overall. Its why the politicization of a global pandemic by the group in control prior to this one and their Feaux News mouthpieces was and is so damn annoying.
  22. Really sorry about your eye problems. But just so you know you should tell those of us who “want socialism” to fuck off to the hellscapes of Sweden, Denmark, Norway, e.t.c. Then you could go ahead and protest Fire Fighters and Libraries. Even then, there is no purely Socialist country just as there is no purely communist country. If I recall correctly you are a nice person (although telling people to fuck off due to misunderstanding political theories belies that a tad) so don’t take this as insulting you or being insensitive to your pains. Some much less nice people than you get these terms mixed up all the time and never learn. https://www.history.com/news/socialism-communism-differences Again, truly sorry for your pains. Understand though that the main purpose of the vaccine was to prevent you from needlessly dying in the hospital. Seems it has done that. As to the people spreading. Some of us get upset that many folks won’t do the bare minimum and act as if wearing a mask is somehow an authoritarian infringement on their freedoms. “Authoritarian” is another term they don’t seem to understand too well.
