  1. From what Ive read, most companies directly affected have built up inventory to weather a short term disruption without too much pain. A long term disruption will bring supply shocks. This could lead to price inflation for limited goods, but could also lead to a slowdown in economic activity (velocity of money / sales of non-essential goods).
  2. I would have taken a pic of the atrocity if there had been sufficient light. It's hard to describe how shocking it looked with mere words. I was up early this morning and went for a long walk. Found another one those "neighborhoods" with the brick wall signs that turned out to be a single street. Roughly half way down this street, I found a two story house that looked like a cube/box. The front of the house had a slight indentation for the front door area, but otherwise looked like a giant white cube. I don't even remember seeing a roof but I might not have been paying enough attention. The house was ugly enough already, but as I walked past the house and looked back, I saw a (roughly 10' x 10') platform jutting out from the wall between the first and second floor over the driveway. It was clearly intended to be a carport cover, but it was too small. It also was not supported by any columns or cross beams. It was framed, but looked from the street like a large sheet of plywood jutting out of the side of the house. It looked like the wood was very slightly warping under it's own weight. Totally bizarre. I might go back some time to snap a pic.
  3. Walked an older neighborhood this morning. Saw some pretty cool looking mature trees. I also saw a house that had a single Live Oak in the front yard. The diameter of the trunk eyeballed a couple feet up from the ground was easily between four and five feet in diameter. I'm no expert, but I'm guessing that tree was easily 60 to 80 years old or older. My inner Lorax was crying though because every branch on the tree had been cleared of all foliage. The ends of every branch had been cut off (topped) like the tree was a Crepe Myrtle. I have never seen that done before on a Live Oak. Also, I was walking along a sidewalk at dark thirty and came upon a stretch where the street lights weren't working and none of the houses had any lights on. I tripped on an uneven section of pavement (that I couldn't see), stumbled forward and caught my balance (hands free) with my face/chin just inches above my knee. I didn't even drop my phone. Not bad for an old man. I much prefer walking in the street to sidewalks before sunrise. Sidewalks are trecherous.
  4. So apparently refs actually call holding in the SEC. Weird.
  5. So I woke up late this morning and didn't start my walk until after 6am. As a consequence, I chose to walk around the grounds of a nearby park that has a bunch of soccer fields that remained virgin hexagon territory. When I got there and saw all that open field, I was thinking: Anyway, even though it hasn't rained and the ground was dry and the fields were freshly cut to less than a quarter inch of grass, my socks and shoes were thoroughly soaked through after about 10 minutes of walking. That tiny layer of grass really holds a lot of overnight/morning dew apparently. Grassy areas really are better left to walking in the afternoon/evening hours. Today I hit the 60k milestone for hexes discovered. Huzzah!
  6. I suspect whoever recorded all that green did so in the early morning hours and/or on a weekend when there wasn't any traffic. ~~~ I went walking a new neighborhood this morning under the nearly new moon (just a slight crescent in the sky). It was about 5:30am as I was approaching an intersection (walking on the sidewalk) and I became aware of a car approaching from behind. The car slowed to a stop right behind me by the mailbox of the house on the corner. The driver didn't kill the engine, get out or turn on any interior light on the car. It seemed odd to me. I proceeded to turn right at the intersection and another right one yard down. I walked about one more yard down the street when I heard the car's engine approaching. I got a bad feeling that there could be some fuckery afoot. I took a few steps up the nearest driveway (which thankfully was dark without illumination), held my phone to my chest and turned my back to the intersection to block any light from my phone. The car drove past me and turned left at the cross street up ahead. I continued walking and when I got to the cross street, I looked down the street to the left. I saw the car coming back from a cross street to the cross street I was scrutinizing and it turned left (away from me). It drove off and I didn't see it again. It dawned on me later that this was probably someone delivering newspapers. People still do that, right?
  7. The rate of growth has come down. There has not been a compensatory deflation to undo the massive inflation that we have already experienced.

  9. I've had the best luck with big box retailers and fast food restaurant chains. Newer shopping complexes might be more savvy with internet marketing, but I've only tried one shopping mall complex (I don't get out shopping very much).
  10. The music might be about to stop for NVDA...
  11. Went for a walk this morning before the sunrise. The sky was clear looking straight up - stars and moon clearly visible. Closer to the horizon I could not see any lights in the sky. To the north and east, I could see clouds, but to the west the sky just looked like a slightly milky haze - what I assume was some thin/diffused cloud layer reflecting some light pollution from off in the distance. I was walking along staring at the road in front of me when a light in the western sky lit up, streaked westward and then disappeared in the span of a second. If the sky had been clear, I would have assumed this was a comet. I'm wondering if what I saw was ball lightening, which I have heard about, but never witnessed first hand. It happened so fast that it was over/gone before it even registered on my conscious thought.
  12. Reason published a decent recap of the story: https://reason.com/2024/09/25/former-houston-drug-cop-whose-lies-resulted-in-two-deaths-is-convicted-of-murder/ The cops were reported to all be plain clothes during the raid.

  14. I'm thinking silver breaks through 35 on it's way to testing 50 after @Superhero sells.
  15. Was the A/C blowing on the phone? I don't know, but there was likely a reason. I have recorded green while walking outside, but it takes some perfect circumstances. It usually stays yellow when I'm going for quiet recordings.
  16. My mic is also sensitive. I've experimented a bit and there are some things I've found that help generate quieter measurements: - Mind your footsteps: My mic picks up on my footsteps if I'm not mindful of them. Stepping on dried leaves or twigs, kicking a rock, a mistep on an uneven sidewalk, etc. Even the pair of shoes I wear - some pairs are quieter than others - Empty pockets are best: keys, coins, reading glasses, etc jangling in the pockets are picked up in my mic - How you hold the phone: If you hold the phone and your letting your arm swing freely, air flow over the phone (mic) is like situating the mic in front of a fan. Holding the phone steady, flat and face up seems to work best for me in getting quiet recordings. Terrain: walking in grass is louder than walking on pavement. When you start paying attention to the noise meter and trying to make quiet recordings, you really become aware of the ambient noises: traffic (even from busy roads far away), birds, crickets, air conditioners, water fountains, sprinklers, wind, etc.
  17. Walked another old road I've never traveled before this morning. Like most old roads in my town, This road has no curb, no shoulder and no street lights. The edge of the pavement immediately slopes into a culvert. On one side of this particular street there are typical subdivision neighborhoods. On the other side were huge custom homes set way back off the street on 10-15 acre lots. Some of these lots have some wild woods hiding the homes from the street. This morning I was reminded of when I was young. There was no internet, cell phones, or video games. As kids, we wandered around outside and found things to entertain ourselves. There were a lot more undeveloped tracts of wild forest back then too and I used to wander around in them. I had the more or less typical young boy fascination with small critters like lizards, frogs and snakes - happy to catch any I found in my wanderings. Part of that fascination was learning about the four types of venomous snakes in Texas. Around the coast where I grew up, there were really only two that were common to see - the cotton mouth/water moccasin and the copperhead. And I saw my fair share of cotton mouth snakes and to a much lesser degree copperheads. While I was a dumb kid, I was smart enough to avoid dancing with them. Supposedly, there are also coral snakes around these parts, but they are reclusive and reportedly very rare to see (I never saw any as a kid). Even so, I still learned the handy rhyme that helps folks distinguish between the coral snake and the king snake: "Red on Yellow kills a fellow. Red on Black [venom lacks | friend of Jack]" So as I was walking back on the wild woods side of the street this morning, I found this roadkill:
  18. The Silencio folks have been exhibiting at some conference in Singapore and apparently demoing the new app they will be rolling out shortly. One enhancement for the new app will allow you to see the hexagon map live while you walk and record. They also posted this recently: https://silencionetwork.medium.com/silencios-roadmap-to-the-future-airdrop-tge-new-app-referral-program-and-beyond-c37ff30827b0 TGE = token generation event
  19. No. Once you start a session, you can just hold the phone in your hand and walk normally.

  22. I walked an old neighborhood this morning and heard roosters crowing from two different properties. Who raises roosters in the burbs? I saw a doctor yesterday. The nurse checking my vitals before I saw the doc was really amazed at my numbers (weight and blood pressure given my height and age) and told me to keep doing whatever I'm doing. My blood pressure (117 over 78) was the lowest I've recorded in a long time. I also seem to have trimmed off ~5 pounds since the last time I stood on a scale.
