  1. i always wanted that dude from snowfall, the uncle, do to more. dude was a badass in that show, as a character but also as an actor.
  2. i never could get into swig, as much as i like martinis, it was too commercial for me. i probably spent more money in the hagen daaz store that was pretty close to there, and shared the same riverwalk view. esquire is a state treasure. i dig all the hotels down there. la mansion is cool, and there used to be a great high-end oyster bar in the bottom of one of the hotels, but i cant remember the name of it. ive posted before about some great meals at oro, at the bottom of the emily morgan. great times at the menger bar, and good martinis to be had at the bar at st anthony, though i only went there during jazz is alive.
  3. we must be long lost brothers. acenar and v bar were my go to's whenever i was on the riverwalk. i also liked zinc, boudro's, biga, and in a quieter stretch of the riverwalk havana inn for martini's.
  4. i would think so too, if i didnt know it was raylan's real daughter. i kinda think that adds something to it. she gets a pass in my book.
  5. i thought both episodes were great. excellent script. clever writing is something netflix is lacking.
  6. what in the holy fuck? there is no end.
  7. good point about us aging and needing more ready access to healthcare as we age. those places i mentioned are far from a decent hospital. i almost mentioned water in my comments about santa fe. not sure it's any more sustainable there than southern utah. shitloads of subdivisions and homes built in the last few decades.
  8. we moved to austin the exact same time, 1982. i'm too thinking of moving one day soon. santa fe is on the list but i dont think it would make the top 5. cost of living for one. the tri-culture factor is a plus to me, not a downside. the cold also is more of a pro than a con. my concern for you would be that you're not into southwestern art of culture. santa fe is the hub of that. if you dont like paintings of desert landscapes, you're not going to like living in the desert, nor the view from your living room for that matter. if you dont like clay pots, you're not going to like the clay your house is built on. i do believe new mexico is the land of enchantment. i feel that way way every time i go there. its a special place, and has a special feeling when you get out of your car. i've been to santa fe ten times or more, and love it, but as a residence i feel it's 30 years too late. been done already. would you consider a smaller town, something like springdale, kanab, or st george, utah?
  9. i was in southern utah towards the end of july two years in a row and the temps were higher there than they were in austin.
  10. it felt special once. i'm sure it is to some people still. the courthouse is cool, the marfa lights are still a mystery a hundred years running, the paesano is worthy, but all those were there when the town was founded. nothing new has improved the place. maybe planet marfa, but thats all that comes to mind. the st george is out of place. would fit in better in downtown austin or nyc.
  11. great drive from balmorhea to ft davis. i agree with your take on marfa. last time i was there did not get a warm feeling. seems like its lost its way.
  12. that was the same tour he played another date in austin, i believe at the backyard, but it could have been where the armadillo christmas bazaar used to be. i was there, though ive killed a few brain cells since.
  13. keep up the good work. may have to plan a trip there soon.

    Kayaking

you dont want to be up high in a kayak. fishing/casting is fairly easy from the sitting position - takes about 20 minutes to adapt and then it becomes second nature. there are many outfitters that rent them on the coast. i only use mine in saltwater, which is why i dont use it much.

    Kayaking

i got a wilderness system tarpon 140 i don't use often enough, and i might be willing to parts with it. its around an $800 kayak though. not sure i really want to part with it, but have been considering it. i go to the coast about once a year and i could probably just rent one that often and safe the pain of storing and loading it.

    Burgers

the crown burger is excellent, on par with dirty's. when i was in college the hole in the wall had an excellent burger. sitting in the back room with the pool tables and a cold beer was a nice afternoon. that burger never gets mentioned in any best of list. i remember it being larger than crown or dirty's, closer to those at camino el camino.
  20. saw women talking over the weekend. fantastic movie. very impressed with the script and the directing. will be watching all of sarah polley's movies from now on.
  21. i can see both he and carolyn getting some sympathy votes, because they're weak unconventional players, neither very competitive in challenges. carolyn at least orchestrated a big move. jam did nothing to orchestrate any votes. the only thing he ever did was lobby for votes for anyone that put his name down. he stayed in the background the entire time, in a sense using the entire tribe as a shield.
  22. would not have given it to jam had i been on the jury. he played a cowardly, hiding behind a shield game. both heidi and carolyn were stronger players, and played a more respectable game.
