  1. nice pics. which slot canyons did you do? last time i was there i only had time to do one and it was off the same road the wave trailhead was on, which is also the same road the condor viewing site at vermillion cliffs is on. we entered the wave lottery all four mornings we were there and no luck. what a joke that is.
  2. contigo suerte foreign and domestic odd duck el naranjo roaring fork
  3. hudsons on the bend is the first place that comes to mind. a little pricier than 616 and farther out, but better atmosphere. i'm sure i can think of a place with great food and a quintessential austin vibe so let me dwell on it.
  4. for cocktails, zinc is right across the street from the westin. they're known as a champagne bar, but i've had some pretty tasty martinis and prickly pear margaritas there.
  5. rip, parkers, hancocks, etl, ec18, weller 12, blantons, and all the rest.
  6. needed to open some bottles last weekend so had a nice little tasting: old elk wheated single barrel store pick from houston filibuster dual cask ironroot promethian iron smoke cask strength this was the order i tasted them in and the order i would rank them in from best to worst. the last two had something off-putting in the finish. i want to say there is some apple in one of their processes that i did not like.
  7. Why not both? sign up for the star party at a date you think you can make, and do the viewing in the meantime. there is no substitute for the star party. you have to do it one of these days.
  8. disagree. this is another witch hunt and waste of time. nothing will come of this. i would like to see more justice done to those that breached the capitol, and i would like to have seen the conservatives take more ownership and accountability for this, but that aint happening. this event is not sticking to them like it should and that's a shame.
  9. great episode. if that had been the finale shota would be top chef. he's got one more opportunity. it was interesting that they all three left something out. potatoes are practically flavorless so i cant imaging they would have added more to the dish. she was already getting rave review and should have kept her lips sealed.
  10. it's quite possible neither party ever has 60 senators again. that means we're in gridlock forever. the only way a president can effect change in this scenario is by executive order. so that's where we are for as far as the eye can see.
  11. in the finale, they usually bring back past, booted, contestants from the season as sous chefs to help out. dawn is not a delegator, cant communicate her vision to a team, and doesn't even seem to formulate it in advance for a team to help, so cant see her doing well in that setting. she is best alone it appears. maybe she will change and win it. it's going to be great no matter what. three great chefs specializing in three completely different styles of food - japanese, mexican, and southern.
  12. i hear ya. stagg jr is 8-9 yrs, vs 12, plus i prefer the wheated mashbill to the #1 of the stagg jr. also, i found out julian van winkle carries around a flask of weller 12, and i figure he knows his bourbon.
  13. my prerequisites are see and hear the gulf, and mainly beach access. i refuse to get in a hot car while already baking, sweaty, oily, and sandy. have never rented a cart, and you guys are starting to make that appealing for the first time, but i've always loved a short walk over the dunes to the beach. my two favorites are aransas princess and mayan princess, but have also stayed at beachhead, island retreat, the dunes, sandcastle, and it seems like another one or two condo complexes i cant remember now.
  14. so do you go for the weller 12 or the stagg jr? tough choice. i have more weller 12 than stagg jr, but would probably grab that one. that looks like small batch eht. if it were single barrel that would add further dilemna.
  15. have they opened up any of the new expansion? does the public have access to any of the new land yet at all?
  16. it's definitely going to be shota and gabe in the final two. dawn is next to go. she's made it through by the skin of her teeth way too many times.
  17. awesome. i stopped at navajo bridge. enjoyed it there but no condors. we had a vrbo in fredonia that worked out fantastically for doing everything we wanted to do. it snowed like a sonofabitch so that was something to work around, and the cold, but really the only misses were condors and north rim.
  18. I was in great basin a couple of years ago. was a great trip and love my pictures of the bristlecone pines. there was a short side trail off that one that took you to a snowmelt lake. did you happen to hit that too? it was beautiful. went to vermillion cliffs spring break, with one of the goals to see the condors but didnt see a damn one. they are at the north rim also, but it was closed due to snow on the road. going to have to head back that way soon to check that off. where did you see yours? capitol reef?
  19. lightning schmitning. i eat lightning for breakfast.
  20. what fucking delay? i'm in austin and not gotten a drop of rain all day.
  21. that was it. the time i went they were terribly disorganized as far as hostess and seating goes, but the food was outstanding. lisabella's was a couple of doors down at one time and was one of the better meals ive ever had in town. i know they've moved to cinnamon shores since. that just leaves roosevelts as decent dining in that area.
  22. what was the name of the fairly upscale place right on the corner of alister and cotter? is it still open?
  23. i find nothing better in the liquor stores of kentucky than the liquor stores of texas. allocation is allocation.
