  2. https://www.texasmonthly.com/being-texan/the-texanist-mother-unhappy-non-texan-girlfriend/?utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=Web Social&utm_content=texanist I’m a senior at Texas A&M and I am happy to report that I have a girlfriend. She’s also a senior and we’ll both graduate this spring, at which time we’ll hopefully each have a job in our respective fields in Houston. The problem is, she’s from Wisconsin and my mom, a rabidly native Texan, sensing that things are progressing, has begun to put out subtle signals that she’d rather I marry a girl from Texas. In fact, she actually said this directly to me the last time I saw her. I thought she was joking at first, but she’s serious. This is crazy, right? How do I convince my mom that her feelings toward my Wisconsin girlfriend are wrong and that she ought to just be happy for us? Name Withheld, College Station A: It warms the cockles of the Texanist’s hardened old heart to hear about a budding love between two young Aggies. Congratulations to you both. It’s great to know, despite all the hurly-burly out there today, what with the political pandemonium, the climate crisis, and the general prickliness, that romance perseveres. And between two Aggies no less. You know, time was, such amorousness amongst Ags was more of a challenge than it is today. Although Texas A&M University opened its doors as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas way back in in 1876, it didn’t begin enrolling women on an equal basis until nearly a hundred years later, in 1971. On a straight sexism level, the foolishness of this type of exclusion is, of course, well documented.

  8. My grandson played peewee football on a team that was assistant-coached by a former NFL long-snapper-Fred Durst of the Redskins. One of the little dudes got roughed up pretty good on a play, and came over to the sidelines crying his nine-year old eyes out. Six foot four bald headed Durst kneeled down and got right in his face. Pointing vigorously at his little heart, Durst said "Son-embrace the pain! Embrace the pain!" The little dude said through his tears "Okay" and turned around and ran back out to the field.
  9. Gonna switch over to watch Redskins backup quarterback.
  10. https://www.radionz.co.nz/news/country/375964/the-cutest-sheep-in-the-world-turns-heads-in-christchurch "If you were to imagine a poodle that was in fact a sheep ... they are the cutest thing on four legs," she said. ooh la la
  11. So there's been a change of management at El Pescador, and the new managers are off the charts awesome. Rob and Jenny Woodruff, well-known to Lake Fork and Broken Bow fly anglers, have moved in and taken charge. This was probably our most seamless trip ever, in large part due to their expertise. Rob is a Capital-A Aggie, and is one fine flyfisher. So, I've been stalking the fishing reports on the website, just to see my initials listed in the "Grand Slam" mentions. Alas, I was omitted. It is a trivial matter, but I was a little miffed. Here's the strongly worded e-mail I fired off. It’s hard to find something to complain about after we’ve had so many wonderful moments at El Pescador. Nevertheless, I do have a bone to pick. After a few weeks of no fishing reports at all, I checked tonight and found that the website had, indeed, been updated. I clicked on my appropriate dates, hoping to see my name in print. Alas-I was not there. No mention was made of my Grand Slam taken on Tuesday, October 23, with Captain Vincent and Captain Roger. Steven R. got his second El Pescador slam, but no mention of my first. (Incidentally, he also is mentioned in the next week’s report) It is a trivial matter in the grand scheme of things, but it would mean a lot to see “Bill B. got his Grand Slam” in the October 23 report. Looking forward to seeing you next year.OK cool-hook’em.
  12. CSB. I was in Mountain Highway when Dr. Schmidley came in to buy a fly rod for Coach Knight as a “Welcome to Lubbock” gift. Pretty nice Sage.
  13. No. No he's not.
  14. Headed to the gym. Gonna watch with no sound and backwards in a mirror. Should be awesome.
  15. He was still around last week, but wasn't working the bar. Mostly just hung around the terminal, talking to folks. He looks old all of a sudden.

University head football coach Denny Douds went out in style last Saturday. The 77-year-old college coach, at the time the active leader in NCAA games coached in any division, called a timeout in the waning seconds of his team's 48-35 loss to fellow Division II school Ohio Dominican — and unexpectedly announced his retirement after 45 seasons at the helm of the program.

  23. Koldtbordt? Lutefisk? Lefse? When I lived in northeastern Montana, all of these delicacies were served to my then kindergartner for lunch at the public school, ca 1987. "Ufdah" was a common oath, and I still use it from time to time. Edit: Prob Norwegian.....
