When we lost our baby 8 months pregnant, as I was driving from the hospital for a break, Tears In Heaven by Eric Clapton came on the radio. Almost wrecked before I could pull over.

That song came out when I was 18 or 19. Me and my buddies were too cool for that "pussy-ass shit" and "crank the Metallica", etc. Then I had kids and the song just blasts me in in the heart every time I hear it. My kids are 19 now and I'm sure they think I'm a dork when I listen to some pussy-ass song, too. They shall learn one day.

Two that I try to avoid when driving are "Sweet Little Jesus Boy" by Andy Williams and "Were you there when they crucified my Lord" by Johnny Cash. I only listen to those when I'm alone, too. No one needs to see my fat ass blubbering.

Not saying that this is necessarily what happened to you today, but if someone is being a left lane slow poke asshole shithead (or some other brand of idiot driver), I'll make sure to do that after I finally pass them.

I go through a lot of wiper fluid.

Nah, we were in slow rush hour traffic, in the middle lane.

There was some article that came out a few years ago that said, essentially, to cheer up when it comes to dead musicians. It's only going to get worse. It's just simple math and the nature of modern day celebrity. We've been exposed to a lot more music than previous generations so there are a lot more of them we know, and the more people you know, the more death you will have to deal with.

This has really been hitting home for me lately. I'm rewatching the Ken Burns County Music doc and they interviewed Charley Pride, Mel Tillis and Merle before they all died. And then they have Loretta Lynn, Willie and others that probably don't have much longer, it really hits home that the entertainers that have been around since before my parents were born won't be here forever. It feels weird and scary.

  4. My kid transferred to a new college (wife's alma mater, so I'm doubly supportive) and I had my eye on this particular t-shirt in the bookstore, but it's always sold out in my size. We were back on  campus this weekend and I checked again and I saw it folded in the stack in the little shirt-cube thing. The sticker had the correct size, the tag inside the collar was correct as well. I bought it, but when I got home and unfolded it, I discovered that it was long sleeve. Motherfucker.

  5. I just watched this tonight, it was sad. I wasn't some superfan but I liked his work. I've only seen No Reservations and I've read his first couple of books. It made me glad that, while I've had some serious (IMO) down points in my life, I've never thought I should just end it all. I'm very thankful for that.

But it really made me think about some things I've been dwelling on, made me feel like I needed to take of my training wheels, so to speak, and do some of those things I always talk about but never seem to do. To put myself out there and take a risk or two, nothing dangerous but just to allow myself the opportunity to triumph or fail and to be OK with either outcome. You only live once, right?

I keep feeling like I'm missing out and then I hop on and remember that I want to be able to pause and I don't want to interact with other real life people who are going to pop in and blow my shit up. So I go fuck around in single player and go offroading or make the cops chase me to the airport, steal a plane, etc. I don't think a new game every 5 years is too much to ask, come on.

I downloaded a program (forgot the name) that you start up before you start your game and it keeps you in a solo online lobby. It just kicks people out before they can even get in. So I could run my cocaine or weed sales without being bothered, it was great.

*Edit* It's called Guardian, I think. I haven't played in at least a year and a half, so I don't even know it it still works.

IMDBtv is a decent streaming site with lots of older tv shows and movies. It's kind of like Pluto. No subscription fee, but there are commercials.

I have watched almost every show/film I liked on Prime slide out of prime and into one of those subscription packs they offer. Some went to IMDBtv, others to Britbox, or Docs or something. It's like cable all over again, I'm not doing it. All it's done is made me scour downloading sites to find the shows I want and put them on my plex server. It has been a pain in the ass but fuck Amazon.

My dad passed last year and anything of worth had already been pillaged or looted by his sister and her kids.   I never expected anything regarding an inheritance but he died broke living in a shitty apartment.   He'd always been a binge earner who worked hard for a while, made some money, then he would spend/blow it all on bad decisions and women.  But I repeat myself.

When I went to clean out the apartment  I offered my aunt and uncle the washer/dryer and whatever furniture they wanted.   The W/D were easily 15-20 years old.   I didn't expect anything other than I just needed it gone.   Whatever they didn't want was going to be hauled as junk.  None of it was in anything close to great condition but there was some decent stuff especially compared to the furniture I had seen at her house a few years ago.   It was one of the most disgusting experiences of my life.   The house reeked of a heavy mixture of pot (my uncle and cousins are MAJOR tokers), animals, urine and musty mildew.   I was there maybe 10-15 minutes and never sat down because nothing was clean enough to sit on.

My aunt, uncle and a cousin swung by with their pick up truck towing a decent sized trailer.   They took everything except the hospital bed he had been sleeping in the last 6 months of his life.  I mean EVERYTHING.   Mattresses, including the one from the hospital bed, and the recliner that he spent 15-18 hours a day in for the last 5 years of his life.  As they hauled it out, I was just thrilled because I could get rid of everything else via either the dumpster or a few trips to Goodwill.

As they finished tying everything down, my aunt turned and asked me if I could give them some gas money (they live barely 10 miles away) because "They were doing me a favor taking all this stuff."   I had already gotten a bid for hauling everything away as trash for $300.   I told her that I would rather they just put it all back and that I would have the junk guys come over.    I basically told her "You and your kids took advantage of him at will.   One of your sons got 2 separate DUIs in my dad's car that resulted in minor damage that he couldn't afford to get fixed because he only had liability and him budgeting to get the car out of impound because neither your or your son paid that.   I saw stuff when I was at your house that I KNOW was his so I think we're even at worst or you owe me.  So get gone."

My stoner uncle, who painted houses his whole life (paintbrush not contract killer) tried to act like the tough guy and I just turned around, went back into the apartment and closed the door.

I was seriously pissed off at the time but 18 months later it's cracks me up and is kind of a fitting end for him and his stuff.   Feast or famine his whole life had ended in famine.

It's stories like this that make me glad that both of my parents left home after HS and never went back, other than an occasional visit. I hardly know any of my extended family and none of them even know where we live, so I don't have to worry about freeloaders showing up after Dad's gone.

Mine likes to get a pound of chicken and a bunch of Romaine. "Gonna make Caesar Salad!"

3 days later I'm tossing the chicken in the freezer before it goes bad. 3 days after that our trash is filled with lettuce. Rinse. Repeat.

A tale as old as time.

My wife will buy those pre-made salads at our local grocery store and it's inevitable that at least one of them gets tossed by sunday ("I forgot that was in there!"). She actually ate all of the ones she bought the last week and tried to spike that football in my face, like she solved an ancient math equation that's baffled scientists for generations. I just told her I was proud of her and walked away.

every morning after morning chow, we had 'field day' in the squad bay, or basically morning clean up. One of the recruits in our platoon was sweeping or mopping  the quarterdeck, the open area by the front door,  when the Battalion Executive Officer walks in.  The recruit knows when an officer comes on deck, it's a big fucking deal, but in boot camp fashion, freezes. The XO, trying to get the recruit to offer the customary, "Good Morning, Sir!" asks the Private  what he should do next.  The guy thinks about it momentarily, pops his mop/ broom to order arms, down by his right foot and renders what he thinks is  a perfect salute like the middle picture below, only sans rifle It is not a real salute, but simply a part of the movement to Order Arms. .  XO did acknowledge the effort, but then had to excuse himself- but did not make it outside before busting out laughing.

We had a LT come by after lights out one night. The firewatch was supposed to greet him with "ATTENTION ON DECK, GOOD EVENING, SIR" but he said something to the effect of "um...hello". The SDI was there and he came out, obviously pissed. He was only there for a minute or two and I heard him say to the SDI "Does he know what to do when I leave?", in a tone of just pure sarcasm and contempt for the kid. SDI says "You know what Sir, I just don't know.". Dude got bent the next day and we all got a lecture.

I’m a bit young to remember but wasn’t he instrumental in fucking aggy on that deal too?   Per his age, his kids look too old to still be home but I don’t know. I do know they keep that yard in tip top shape.  Also, he as a huge black poodle that looks like a horse. Seems like a decent enough guy when I’ve said hello etc.

He got 4 schools on probation: A&M, OSU, OU and Illinois. The grand slam of cheating, I guess.
