Understand, but it's not the difficulty of obtaining the permit that's at issue here, it's the very need to have the government's permission to carry that's the issue.  As an extreme, and very unlikle example, here in Virginia you can open carry without a permit.  If I happen to be open carrying with a shoulder holster, or a rig on my hip on a nice warm spring day while I'm out and about, and a cold front blows in, the temperature drops and I put on a jacket, I am now concealed carrying and technically committing a felony by putting on my jacket.  Is this a likely scenario...no, but as I stated in my last post, the Constitutional Carry law protects those who don't want to open carry, would like to carry concealed, but for whatever reason have chosen not to get licensed.

In Oklahoma, we had concealed only (with permit) for a while. The issue was, for example, you bent down to tie your shoe and your shirt came untucked and your firearm was exposed. At that point, you were no longer concealed and had technically broken the law. Then they added open carry. After that, we had permitless concealed as well. Nothing has changed. I've only seen one guy open carry in the 30+ years I've lived here.

But all our bullshit and levity aside, a black or hispanic man is going to make use of this new freedom and be perceived as a threat by fellow citizens and something bad is gonna happen in the next 12 months.  It's just inevitable.

No, it won't. We've had this for a few years in Oklahoma and if the people here are as dumb, racist, methed up as most of you say, it would've happened here already. You were right in your second sentence, it will be a nothing burger. Just like the people in Oregon that thought there would be many deaths by people pumping their own gas.

I’m not say I am a bad ass. But if something goes down, the majority of the time it’s fast and chaotic and you are not The Man With No Name and drawing your gun and shooting 3 guys in 1 second.

I don't want to speak for anyone else but I'd bet most CCL holders would agree with me: I have zero desire to shoot anyone or even draw my weapon. My only goal would be to GTFO of the situation alive. I'm not trying to shoot 3 guys, I'm trying to make my escape and keep myself/my family safe. If some shit goes down in the 7-11, I'm not going to save the clerk, I'm going for the safest exit. I wouldn't draw down on someone unless I was cornered.

I've had my license for almost 3 years, never even came close to needing it but I'm glad I have the option.

  4. Sitting at the table with my kids and their friend, just shooting the shit. The question comes up "What's your favorite fictitious animal?"

Wife: "Hmm, a narwhal, I guess?"

Me: "Uhh, those are a real thing."

    Wife: "Really? Oh. Unicorn then."

I'm actually proud she had heard the word narwhal and knew it was some kind of animal.

@Sandman, what was your project car?  Have you talked about it / posted pics in the "Classic Car" thread?  Talked about it here?

Also, where do you live (what town)?

Ha, it was a '94 Miata. A neat little car but nothing I'd post pics of in that thread. My wife just got a '20 Mustang convertible, so the Miata became redundant. Why have hamburger when you can have steak, right? I don't miss it at all, I had it for 2.5 years and I sold it for twice what I paid. Thanks, Covid, I guess. And I'm in the OKC burbs, condolences accepted.

As usual, I feel a bit better after letting of some steam in here. Thanks to everyone who take part in this thread, you guys are the shit.

  6. I'm letting things add up and weigh on me. Why? I KNOW it doesn't have to be like this.

I am allowing my job to affect my peace of mind. I thought I was over this shit for a few years, I don't know why I'm all of the sudden falling into this trap that I made for myself. I want to let shit roll of my back but I can't. I was doing so well with that, too.

My brother-in law's sudden passing in January is still heavy on my mind. It's making me think back to my mother's sudden passing, 14 years ago. I spent a week in the hospital last fall and now, every time I have an ache or pain, I just assume that my time is up, just like Mom and BIL. WTF?

I just feel overwhelmed, I don't even know how to have fun anymore, it seems. I sold my project car last week, I was pretty much done with it and it was just sitting there in the driveway. Now I want something else but I can't find what I want, or I find something way out of my budget and I just want to give up and never bother trying to do anything. My poor wife tries to be supportive but I know she's at a loss. I just want to run down the street as fast as I can, yelling like a viking berserker. I'm angry and scared. I don't know why.

I've got lots of informed opinions on the homelessness issue in Austin.

But for the rest of the day, if I'm honest, I'm just gonna be staring outside wondering what, exactly, goes on at an Oklahoma Home & Garden Show.

There were no gardens or gardening, so it was quite a bait and switch. Lots of storm shelter/siding/window vendors.

This is the price I had to pay for my wife going to various gun and car shows.

  8. I went to a home & garden show in Oklahoma City over the weekend and there was a booth from what I assume was the Texas tourism board. I find this whole topic interesting, so I asked this very nice middle-aged woman about the camping ban and her face just sank. She said she lives just outside of Austin but she frequently has to go to the capitol for work stuff and it's no longer a fun trip. Pretty much echoed many of the sentiments posted here.

  9. About 25-30 years ago, I remember seeing my mom crying at the table, not a huge bawl-fest but she was upset. I didn't say anything, I just found my dad and asked him what was up. He said my mom got a letter from my grandma, telling her that she won't be able to continue to write letters anymore. Her memory problems were just too bad. I was around 20 at that time (selfish moron) and I only met my grandparents 5-6 times, so I wasn't exactly bothered by this but my mom was crushed. She and her mother wrote to each other all the time, they didn't do many phone calls. That was pretty much her only connection to her mom and it was over. Looking back as someone in my late 40s, it's really sad.

I was living in Eastern Germany when that happened and even though the winds were going East most of East Europe including myself were irradiated.

I was 7 at the time so I just kinda shrugged and said ok, but it turns out that shit is serious. I can’t donate blood, bone marrow or organs and my risks for shit is considerably higher. I had a cancer scare when I was 20 at UT which sucked and was eventually attributed to my exposure. I believe I read somewhere that over 200 million people could possibly have been affected.

    it’s some real shit

I was 12 and living in western Germany, I honestly don't remember much fuss about it. Too busy beating off to pay attention, I guess.

I can't give blood either, due to possible mad cow disease exposure. Thanks, Europe!

  11. I went last night and it was the worst whataburger trip ever. First, they put the burgers in the wrong wrappers, so I bit into my wife's horrible burger. Then the fries were obviously stale and crunchy, almost like old cheetos. Then my lemon pie, which I had let sit a while, was nuclear hot. I took a bite and had to spit it out. The filling poured out like hot tea, nothing resembling pie filling at all. Just an all-around clusterfuck. I'm avoiding that location for a long time.

The process of arresting and charging him takes 2-3 hours so that time they are away from their post and other officers (who are already stretched thin) have to cover which make for long response times and more pissed off citizens.

Do you really think those cops were going to do some hard-nosed police work in those 2-3 hours and not just play grab-ass or hide in an alley? Because I sure don't. If anything, they'd probably just give out some bullshit tickets and ruin the day for some taxpayer.

  13. I was too cheap to pony up for a wireless xbox controller for my PC, went to Gamestop and bought a decent controller with a six foot cord. It works fine but the fucking cord has to twist itself up in 4 spots for some reason, making the effective length of the cord about a foot long. So I have to uncoil the thing every time I use it, then watch it flip back.

  14. My mom lived for 10 years after having cancer. Dad swears that the chemo is what really got her in the long run. The treatment ruined her immune system, she was always sick with something after that. Colds, flu, even became asthmatic, which she never had before. Heart failure took her one morning, coming up on 14 years ago. Never saw it coming, 58 years old.

RIP to all we've lost before their time.
