  1. Duke's is next door, in the Outrigger I believe. The Royal Hawaiian Hotel is the "Pink Palace," the old venerable classic beachfront hotel and one of the first hotels in the state.
  2. Kamehameha School is pretty badass, actually. It prioritizes admissions of kids with some proof of Hawaiian descent as well as indigent kids and orphans. You can imagine how many of those kids playing o-line are some seriously pissed off motherfuckers. They have some serious grudges. I think it's interesting to know that the school also owns the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, several malls on Oahu, the Four Seasons, a few condos in Waikiki, and a bunch of exclusive properties in Kahala (one of the wealthiest parts of the state). They used to own the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center as well. Many people who have visited Oahu have personally donated to KS without ever knowingly doing so. /csb
  3. Yeah, I was actually trying to think of what musicians were on the precipice of going in a new, interesting direction but for their death. I think some people here have replied along the lines of "I wish I had seen so and so live" or "Geez I really miss that artist." Both are fine, but I was actually more interested in the former. Layne Staley was a good pick, as were Biggie and Tupac. Buddy Holly of course. You can see threads of more deeper stuff, more introspective and complex stuff starting to emerge in each of their catalogs. Artists tend to mature and it would have been cool to see what stuff they came up with had they been given the opportunity.
  4. while I agree with you re: Elliott Smith, I just need to put this here for your reference:
  5. Co-sign. Bolt Thrower always delivers. Whenever it comes up in my rotation, it inevitably leads to volume going up.
  6. Thanks to Steamboat1874 for this idea. On the Cool Pictures of Music Icons thread, he said he would've really liked to see what Buddy Holly would've done with his music had he not died in that tragic plane crash. Got me thinking. So many musicians seemed primed to make a really great turn towards a new sound, but for being killed or dying before they got there. Hendrix was experimenting with all sorts of sounds. John Lennon finally seemed to be at peace with his inner demons. Kurt Cobain was writing mellower, more introspective stuff. Bon Scott was at the top of his game. As big of a Beatles honk as I am, the answer for me is SRV. That stuff he was putting out circa In Step after getting sober -- Tightrope, Life by the Drop, Riviera Paradise -- that was signaling a very cool new direction and I really would've loved to see what he created after that. Goddammit.
  7. Thanks for the new thread idea.
  8. and that's fair
  9. yeah even though it's gonna be short sets with partial lineups, bad vocals, etc...still, probably the greatest metal concert of all time.
  10. The list of idiotic women thinking that they truly understand their incarcerated lover in a way the rest of society can't is a very, very long one. I worked in a maximum security prison and believe me, there were no shortage of letters and love requests from outside admirers to the morally vacant ingrates that inhabited that place.
  11. "They can talk, but they can't curse. It's the anti-tourette's syndrome of the apes."
  12. Our WBB team is so badass.
  13. Got our Kylie Minogue tickets -- she's still sexy af and her last two albums have been a fantastic resurgence. Can't wait.
  14. Texas' trajectory and momentum is pretty remarkable lately. NIL has been huge (thanks again to all those here involved with that effort), coaching stability has been strong, and the portal and draft have been friendly to us. We have had lots of guys that could easily leave wind up staying (J Whitt, Taaffe, Arch), and the same is true of coaches. Hell of a ride lately.
  15. Single setting. I have to take a breath and rest a bit after 30-40, but I just keep at it until they are done. I'm sure you know by now that some days are easier than others, for whatever reason.
  16. Yeah I'm realizing I need a rest day every so often as well. My shoulder is not super happy lately. I have been doing 55 per day but I think I'll bump it up to 62 or 63 so I can take one day off per week without getting off track. I think I started at a different baseline than Imma -- these pushups are more maintenance than strength building for me -- but I still need to rest every so often.
  17. Well had I known that existed, I might not have gone to the trouble! Definitely could've started with that... BUT I do think that having my book be spiral bound helps a lot when playing. Also, the fact that most of the songs in my book span just two pages makes it way easier to read and play. The book you referenced certainly looks more complete, but I don't need all of the extra notations at this point. Plus I do think there was value for me in really taking the time to pore through things and write them down by hand -- part of my learning process I suppose. Maybe not necessary for others, but I needed the time it took to transcribe, etc to really process the different things I was learning and playing. Still, that's a cool resource book I didn't know existed, and it's now on my Christmas list, so thanks!
  18. I sweatergod, Surly is amazing. In a thread about Arch, the convo strangely turns to sausage and then within minutes Abe Froman (the sausage king of Chicago) brings in some insider intel from one of the great voice mails of all time. Just incredible. Well done, gents.
  19. Yeah I posted a while back I liked the idea so I'm doing it as well. I work best when I have these tangible daily / weekly goals, so this works really well for me.
  20. I have no problem with that. Not surprising, but justified. It's a badass song and performance.
