  1. Anyone done any road cycling in Vail area. Staying in Eagle Vail area.

I can do the Vail Pass to Frisco, but that is a long day from Eagle Vail ?72 miles with elevation elevation above sea level for this flatlander). Im going to do it but that cant be a regular thing since I have duties when the kids wake up at 11am or so and want to just be able to ride the whole way without doing any driving.

Any gravel stuff or extremely easy mountain bike stuff ( easy hardtail) close by in Eagle Vail/ Avon? Will bring both bikes. Thanks. I'll hang up and listen.

Does not change the fact that he  illegally conducted foreign policy negotiations to influence the election while not being President, much less any agent of the federal government. So I guess he wasn't as confident without the benefit of historical hindsight.

Yeah, that was some ratfuckery, and risky too. Had he been found out, that might have swayed things back then.

  3. That fan film was really entertaining. I could easily see a movie or two coming out of filling in the blanks from LOTR and the Hobbit.

I didn't see any Harfoots (Harfeet?) in the trailer. Most didn't like them in the first season since they seemed unnecessary and only a plot device for the Gandalf character. I however, was interested to see what they might do to connect them to the Shire since they are specifically mentioned by Tolkien in the LOTR preface "On Hobbits".

Reagan rat fucked Carter. And the rest of the country

He may have, but he certainly didn't need to. You had recession, high interest rates, gas shortages and escalating prices, a hostage crisis, a failed rescue attempt for hostages, and a failing US auto industry.

Carter's measured and thoughtful nature did not play well and everybody forgot all about the Israel and Egypt peace accord and the SALT stuff.

Reagan was a successful governor and had long been in the public eye as a candidate, not to mention being a much better speaker and debater than Carter.

Dems lost the Senate in that election too along with a bunch of house seats, so it wasn't just Carter.

All Reagan had to do was not make some huge gaff and talk about hope for the future and he would have still won in a cakewalk and that was with Anderson as a legit 3rd party guy siphoning off R votes.

Carter had no chance ratfuckery or no.

  5. CSB: Back in 1983, my family was flying back to Austin from Miami and changed planes in Atlanta. I was 16.

The Carter's were on the same flight in first class so we had to walk past them to get to our coach seats.

No meet and greet on that flight since Jimmy was still traveling with his Secret Service goons, but Amy was checking out my twin brother as he passed by.

Amy was pretty goofy looking as a child and somehow morphed into a Ron Howard look alike as an adult, but she looked pretty good that day as a mid teen, from what I recall, although I was more focused on Jimmy, and Rosalynn was smoking.

Still, twin brother dodged a bullet.

Once we got in the air, the crew made an announcement, and there was applause but that was about it.

Godspeed Jimmy...oh what might have been.

Yea I think they were on the run for murder already….  I wouldn’t go camping in PINs without a gun, many stories over the years of people on the run hiding out there.

Entrance to PINS is under constant video surveillance. Probably one of the worst places to hide out.

Met some real nutters down there though. But kind of a lot work to get down there and do criming.

    No guns for me.

Perhaps he has the long Covid. He had a pretty bad case of it back in the day. I remember because I was hoping he would die.

  8. And for those of you  that got the vaccine and didn't think you needed it or didn’t get it all because you were in a low risk group, consider yourselves lucky, because that shit does not always work out.

My best field employee, big, strong fit, young guy straight out of central casting almost died from this shit, was sidelined for months and is still not right in the head.

Also, my twin brother's best friend died yesterday from covid complications (he was a recovering cancer patient). So this shit is still out there waiting for you to get feeble and vulnerable.  So keep up with best practices.

At this point, I'm looking into what I need to do since I haven't been stuck in a year and a half.

I too did my first MS150 from Houston so we had tail wind/cross wind both days. The hardest was the last 14 miles into Collie Station. Holy shit the cross wind was brutal.  Rode with team sponsorship so had a cot and air-conditioned sleeping arrangement.  Didn't have to tent camp.  Saw several bad wrecks on Sunday due to wet roads.

Came from Austin, so Sunday was not bad at all except for my hangover.  I really thought Sunday was going to get canceled and behaved accordingly on Saturday to my own detriment.

I am really surprised Austin riders did not have a bunch of heat related issues on Saturday.

Season 2 is better than season 4.

Also, everything is better than season 4.

Also, season 2 got hammered pretty bad, but I think it was pretty good and on par with or better than season 3...just not season 1 good by a long way.

  11. MS 150 is  in the books. Thanks to those who donated. Resting is over and will get back to riding tomorrow.

Nasty headwind on Saturday. Completely demoralizing.

Thinking of doing that Lukemia charity ride around Lake Tahoe next year.  Anybody done it?

The puppy execution story explains so much about the disordered maga mindset.

I think the actual act had little to do with anything political since it occurred before she even thought about public office.

However, there was never any reason at all to disclose it, since it could be denied and never proven. Really just an unforced error or failure to read the room or worse.

Killing an animal like a dog, can be a particularly brutal act when you actually have to do it or whitness it. There are many opportunities to stop and reevaluate.

Different times, but I watched my grandmother execute a puppy back in the 80s for no reason other than the pound was 40 miles away and it was a stray. I was in charge of the burial.  I found the deceased bound with wire on both legs with a gunshot wound to the head. Grandma was a lifelong Democrat that would give you the shirt off her back. I took it that this was not the first time this had happened since they were close to the highway and railroad out in the country of South Texas.

My mother told me a story from her childhood where her two pet puppies gorged themselves on chick's when left unattended. Their punishment was to be bound up in a sack and thrown in the river by her dad.

How many of us on the board whacked squirrels or birds with our pellet guns when growing up? Not me, but I'm sure many of you have and felt the appropriate amount of shame and regret at doing so, and certainly wouldn't want to disclose that to anyone.

Weird things happen in the country sometimes, especially  more than a few decades ago.  This whole disclosure seems odd, almost to the point where I don't think we are getting the real story.

At any rate, this did not go the way she thought it would.

I think people forget how funny 30 Rock was.

I like PnR a lot but it's not even a convo for me between those 2. I'd probably put 30 Rock above every live action sitcom not named Seinfeld (granted I'm a little young to have ever gotten into anything pre-Seinfeld).

*Actually - that's not true. Forgot about Arrested Development.

Baldwin got the Emmy for that scene.

Also 30 had an incredible list of guest stars and semi regulars.

Alan Alda, Rip Torn, Tim Conway, Carrie Fischer, Steve Martin, AL Gore, Condoleezza Rice, Nancy Pelosi, Jennifer Aniston, Bryan Cranston, NBC News crew, Betty White, all of Liz's boyfriends and Jack's girlfriends, James Franco, Jerry Seinfeld, Conan, Oprah, Paul McCartney, LL Cool J, Tom Hanks, Whoopi, Paul Giamatti, Emma Stone etc.

The best ones were when the guest star played a fictional character rather than just themselves.

With all the different scenarios and things going on in NYC, they could have kept that show going forever.

It gets better every time I rewatch it. For comparison, I was a big fan of Lost during its run, but I have no desire to go back and watch any of it.

Probably my favorite sitcom of all time with Arrested Development.

To me, Modern Family and PNR were just different takes on the Office.

Growing up and into my 30s, I feel really fortunate to have seen such groundbreaking sit com formats with such talented casts.

MASH to Cheers to Seinfeld to The Office to Arrested Development to 30 Rock. There is a lot of great stuff in between, but the above shows reinvented the format and executed it with generational talent, writing, and timelessness.

Maybe it happened later than 1984 after I graduated, but I went through the West Mall 4-6 times a day from 1980-1984 and never saw anything being smashed.  There was always some kind of peaceful protest or demonstration (almost always sparsely attended) happening on the West Mall but the frat guys, speaking for myself and the ones I observed, just walked on by.  And nobody ever blocked my way or threatened me.

Started in 1985 and the "shanty" got wrecked all the time, if you can call it that, since it looked pretty bad to begin with.  The frat guys always got blamed, so I just went with that.

Growing up in Austin, I went to the drag and west mall all the time, especially in high school and I don't even remember seeing the shanty then.

I remember a couple of protests I had to shuffle through, but no big deal.

The most annoying thing were the pamphletiers that were on campus. The Jews for Jesus guys were especially pushy. Not sure why I got the treatment. I guess it was the blond hair and blue eyes with a pagan smirk on my face that drew them in.  I also remember my Antisemitism in History and Literature professor, who was Jewish, hated that group in particular based on the stupidity of the idea alone.

That was a different time and I'm pretty sure the administration thought all of the South Africa stuff was cute compared to all the Vietnam protests just a few years earlier.

Also, the Texas economy was in the shitter back then, so we were all just fighting to stay employed.

Perhaps it's just an ill-chosen picture, but does that look like a checkpoint to anyone? Looks like an ambush, but the press doesn't want to use any prejudicial language (or they're just stupid).

Driving to a doctor appointment yesterday, I listened to one of the NPR daytime programs, The World or Here and Now or Whatever. I don't return to this story often anymore because it's so frustrating and brutal. On the program they have changed the nomenclature to War on Gaza instead of the Gaza War.

Just can't get their timid lil' brains around the fact that this is a brutal invasion without regard for non-combatants' lives or famine among the population Israel has displaced. It's evidently common knowledge now that Netanyahu supported Hamas and is no more moral than Donald Trump.

There's your story. It's horrific. It's a scandal. Feelings about the Jewish people in general have nothing to do with it.

Only the occasional panel member mentions it. Now back to the "war" in Gaza that was provoked by the unspeakably depraved attack on Israeli civilians on Oct. 7.

    It's not a war.

The bloody depraved campaign in Gaza can no longer be even remotely justified by Oct. 7.

Israel has a wicked leader who is at the center of this brutal reality.

Start there. Give us the straight dope on an imperialist psychopath who only cares for retaining power and using brutal means to do so.

Oh, he was also in charge when the Oct. 7 attack occured and his regime ignored warnings and failed to defend their people.

Here in America, let's sic the police on anyone who joins a protest gathering opposed to the slaughter.

    Idiot World.

Not only that, but humanitarian crisis unfolding was entirely foreseen and disclosed months ago.

I know very little of the nuances in the region but could easily see what was going to happen even given the limited information that was spoon fed to me.

I was nearly run over in the Draught House parking lot by drunk frat boys more times than I can count.

New year's eve 2003, wife and I and another couple closed the place down. When we got outside, some dude and his girlfriend tried to sell us a bunch of scented candles. So random. Wife bought like $50 worth.

Probably should cross post to the wives thread.
