Back in the day (1980's) my parents got real churchy, or I should say more churchy. They were already pretty hard core catholics and my brother and I went to catholic school we made all the holy days and then some, prayed at home (rosary and all), had tons of Heavy ancient catholic reference books and lots of paperback books on theology, bios on 20th century catholics, and all the religious artifacts and nick knacks about. They got into the more evangelical side of things and they brought my brother and me to all of their conventions, services, and seminars. There was much good that came out of it and despite being very uncomfortable with it the whole things was pretty low key and the money side was more like passing of the plate after an AA meeting than what is going on in the mega church world, although there were plenty of t shirts, tapes and books to be had for the right price. My brother who was much more cynical and kind of an asshole, used to remark that the people that showed up to these things were a bunch of losers and were generally fat to boot (he used much harsher language). The point was is that these were people who were in need of a pick me up and it was ok to be poor, fat, unattractive, lazy, unsuccessful, submissive, and have a history of poor life choices because god still loved you and everything would be ok in the afterlife. It was a way of opting out and not taking responsibility in the worst of cases. These were people in search of a fix, a quick fix if we are being honest. It doesn't really matter whether we are talking about salvation, lowering your handicap, losing weight, stopping arthritis pain, taking hebal medicine, pyramid power, getting that can't miss fishing lure, Amway, or hiring that up an coming college football coach. There is always some con that gets you to believe that success will be yours if you just do buy these things or follow this little known formula.

Not sure if because old or new technology: I recently inherited my wife's smartwatch. (She was not getting optimal watch/phone interface performance so she switched to Apple product). So I get this thing up and running and all synced up and noticed the "sleep" function after a few days. I suffer from mild sleep apnea and thought lets see what's going on. So after a few days things are great. I get this little graph showing what my readiness levels are for the day after I get up and how much in the way of resources I recovered during sleep. So things are good and I am anywhere from 90-100% recovered upon waking and my sleep quality is great. Heart rate during sleep drops down into the mid 30's beats per minute, god REM, Deep and light sleep numbers. Then one day, I decide to have a nice pint of IPA around 8PM. I wake up the next morning feeling like shit, then I check my sleep stats. I am at 19% resources which was 6% lower than when I went to sleep. No deep sleep, no rem sleep, and my BPM dropped down to only 60BPM. Thinking this might be a one off, I repeated the experiment and same results (more alcohol yields even worse results). Not only that I have found that if I exercise (mostly walking) in any way past 8PM, my sleep also suffers and I feel it. So yay me.

Unlimited online choices. Wanted to get a percussive massage gun to work out some knots on my shoulders. Holy shit. There were over 1200 options on Amazon. So instead of ordering a therapy gun and getting some relief, I had to spend a few days slumped over my phone to see every combination of stall force, amplitude, battery life, programmable settings, blue tooth options, styles, colors, reviews, noise, attachments etc. Finally got it ordered then was notified it was on back order for three weeks ...argh. Ordered another one and it worked out great, although at first I was not filled with confidence. User brochure title exactly as written: TRIGGER PIONTS THERAPY FOR MYFACIAL PAIN.....great.

Poor camera work. You kind of lose the human scale.

Given their relative sizes, the "electron" bird would need to be somewhere around Waco (if proton and neutron were in Austin), in order for the correct subatomic scale to work.

Looks like the leader in the clubhouse is staycation here in Austin. This is kind of my weak spot. I was over 40 the first time I ever visited the Capital Building for real and I grew up here. I must have been sick all of those days in elementary school. Although I did enter the building right before the 1999 Congress Ave. Mile (age 32) for a pre-race deuce. It got me over the top and I finished in 4:58. So any new ideas for day trips or local stuff?

Do You Know Anyone Personally Who Was Murdered or a Murderer?

Did you remove the action figures from their original packaging? -
True that. My oldest son lives in NO and we visit from time to time. A few years back we used to go to an annual rock climbing competition there and rent a house with another family. One year my oldest arranged for the Air B&B and he got us a sweet deal...in the lower 9th ward. The neighborhood was alright with some spotty rental conversions and long time residents. The way into the hood was pretty dicey . Google maps took us under this bridge with some locals hanging out and shooting up while we did our slow u turn under the bridge dodging old couches and other furniture. All the kids made friends with the local kids and they all played football and Frisbee in the streets while the adults watched with beverages from the front porch. I don't remember much else except that two of the kids they were playing with were named Taco and French Fry. That neighborhood was creepy as fuck though. There was an old abandoned schoolhouse across the street and a lot of the houses looked haunted.

Not tight on money. I too think there is more at play here. My guess is BIL is pissed at SIL, because I know this is her doing. BIL and I get along great. In fact, with me being around up there I think he gets away with a whole more than he is used too what with me being a surly degenerate and all. About four years ago BIL and I went out in the canoe before dusk to see if we could scare up some bass. It is not a big lake (about 400 acres) and we can see his cabin from our fishing spot. We sat out there, drank lots beer and slayed the bass on top waters for about two hours. I had no idea what I was doing, I just did the stuff I normally do for speckled trout when the water is calm and it somehow worked. He now thinks I am some kind of fishing guru. Poor guy was all stressed out with work and family and would later remark to my wife that was one of the best days of his life (top 20). And no you sick fucks, we did not do any Broke Back lake type of stuff...... .....that day.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. Keep at it, the more options I throw out there the more the wife thinks I am involved and working on this. So I tried to keep the starter post brief as I have already been abused on on the Wives thread for being wordy and not funny. But here it goes: So we have been doing this for about eight years now and there has never been any sign of trouble. We all get along, we contribute on the provisioning, help out with maintenance, dishes, meals, kids all get along as well. So all good there. We have been in contact with BIL and SIL all summer about a late July /early August trip (just like every other year). Everybody was all in especially since we missed last year due to COVID. So about two weeks ago the wife starts putting feelers out for an exact time window. (We have 4 pets and a small goat herd which need advanced arrangements. The goats would need there own thread, but that is another story) . So that goes OK and my BIL said he needed to check with the SIL on which week and would get right back to us. Time goes by, we are hyping the trip to our kids, I'm puttering with fishing equipment, even went out and bought a new inflatable SUP for the trip. The wife calls every few days and ...nothing, which is not unusual for BIL, so we don't really think anything of it until late last week, when my wife said her brother is still not calling back and we both suspected something was up. My wife thought that perhaps BIL and SIL got into a big fight or something, since the last time we talked to both of them SIL was drunk and was coming up with nutty ides like inviting my parents on the trip, which would be a horrible idea, and BIL was cutting her off to keep things on topic and was clearly annoyed-but hey we have all been there and I didn't think that was the reason. I was leaning more into some last minute thing dreamed up by my SIL: Which it was. Turns out that there 3rd oldest child wanted to visit colleges, so SIL planned a family trip to Chicago that somehow destroys the 3 week cabin vacation window. Wife said she tried to work something out on the front or back end where we get there before or leave after they leave but no dice. So a legit excuse but kind of shitty with the last minute stuff and length of time involved, plus BIL is kind of a pussy, plus it still sounds like BS to me.

You left out coffee on the shitter and 6 pair of safety glasses.

I may also post this in Help Forum. Our annual family trip to my BIL's lake cabin in late July/Early August has been cancelled. We drive up there every summer and enjoy a week to ten days of fishing, drinking, water skiing, hanging out, campfires, etc. In other words, a real vacation. The kids have a blast. It's pretty affordable too. Dammit. BIL dropped this on us today. I won't go into their bullshit reasons. We were just talking about this with them two weeks ago for fucks sake. So I need some Surly ideas. My boys that are still in the house are 13 and 15, if that helps. We broke the news to them and they said they wanted to go to the beach. I think Texas beaches are out. We just did that in late April and Port A was crowded then. Driving looks like the way we go. So its all open: Desert, Mountains, Lake, Austin staycation..whatever. Go.

Then my work here is done. The student has become the master.

We have some theories: It might have fallen off of a work bench into the trash without anybody noticing. Hard to see this what with the extension cord and all. My 15 yo might have taken it and forgotten about it. He works on his skateboards over at a friends house, but hard to see what he might use it for on a board plus he says he never took it. Accidental or intentional theft by sleepover kid. We live in the country and our property is fenced, gated, and patrolled by dogs so nobody just wandered in and took it. My best guess is that it is tucked away somewhere that we have not looked.

Yes. Doesn't everybody?

Long backstory that allows me to vent. Back in 2013, the night before the fall Shaggy Matagorda trip, I was loading my kayak up and notice a huge crack/puncture below the forward water line. I had no idea how it got there (still don't know), but I was leaving early in the morning, so I adapted and just loaded up my other kayak, went on the trip and had fun. All good. When I got back I checked around and could not find anyone to plastic weld the kayak damage, so I eventually watched a few videos, got some plastic tools from Harbor Freight, and did the job myself. For years the plastic welding held up through many fishing trips and other recreation. Last summer I took my two youngest boys out to Lake Travis a few times for some deep water soloing (they are both competitive rock climbers) on the cliffs. Each time I noticed that the kayak was taking on more and more water, so I decided to redo the weld. We had just purchased a Dremmel tool that we use mostly to do cutting work on plastic holds we have in our home rock climbing gym (as posted previously here). I thought I could use the Dremmel to remove sand all of the old plastic, regroove and start over. So I looked and looked and looked for that stupid Dremmel tool and it was nowhere to be found. Time dragged on and we didn't have need of the damaged kayak so I kind of forgot about it until a couple of weeks ago when we went to Austin Kayak to get an inflatable SUP. While at the store, I inquired about having my old kayak fixed...professionally, and found out that they now do this work. When I got home I decided one last time find that dammed Dremmel tool, just in case I wanted to do the work myself. Still no luck, but then I remembered that my wife had me get one of those locking tool work benches by Husky a few months back. She was very possessive of that thing and she put a bunch of tools in it and locked it up (my 15 year old is fond of taking things out and losing them). I thought to myself, I wonder if she locked up the Dremmel tool in there, so I got the keys and went to have a look. No Dremmel, but in addition to some tools there were about 6 pairs of safety glasses in there all lined up in a row. So I thought this is stupid, we need access to safety glasses etc., so left the box unlocked and returned the keys. Then last weekend. I had just had my morning coffee and was taking a glorious shit while blissfully reading the surl in the downstairs bathroom, when there is a violent knock on the door (the kind that startles you-I almost dropped my phone and coffee): Wife: Where are all the dammed safety glasses, you guys take those things and I can never find them!!! (wife was going to do some weed eating around the garden) Me: Well I saw about 6 pair of those things in the work bench that you put there and locked up. Wife: OK. A minute or two goes by as I settled back in to what I was doing. Violent knock on the door. Wife: Where did you put my keys, there not in my purse. Me: I put them back where I got them from which was one the key rack, and I left the cabinet unlocked, so leave me in peace. Silence. Then a few minutes later another knock on the door. Wife: Bla,bla bla, something about putting things back, safety glasses, taking responsibility, learning how to stop inconveniencing others etc. Me: OK, sigh. I make it outside and the first thing she asks me is if I can change out the line on weed eater because she doesn't know how to do it. Loaded up kayak and took it to ACk to get fixed. Took my time. Got beer on the way home. TLDR: Wife interrupts my shit to hassle me about shit she put away and forgot about, then hassles me again about more shit that she forgot about, then taunts me a third time for the previous two things, then asks me for a favor, then I left and came home and got drunk.

Obesity problem? More like Obesity solution, am I Right? Of course we wouldn't need the Obesity solution if we didn't have the Obesity problem in the first place. Sort of a fat chicken and egg thing.

Man on the street anecdotal stuff: I own a construction company and we have a few cold beers on Friday afternoon with some of the workers and some relatives and friends of my business partner come by from time to time. One guy who is not vaccinated, a Trumper, is doing so because he already had a pretty bad case of Covid and his whole immediate family got it as well, just not as bad as him. He is reluctant because of possible Covid like side effects which he does not want to repeat, plus he and his immedates already have some immunity. Said he was waiting to see how it played out and for full authorization. Not sure about all of his facts, but at least he has some semi valid reasoning behind his decision. Another guy who is not vaccinated, not sure if Trumpy or not, but seems very religious, gave me the old God will take of it bit. However, upon further questioning, finally admitted he thought the whole thing was bullshit and anybody that "had" covid had something else. I reminded him one of our workers, who he knows, who got covid and almost died. He insisted it was probably a bad flu. That's when I had to tell him to get the fuck out.
