Texas Recruiting Notes 2024: Bags Don't Beat Bankrolls
PTINS replied to texifornia's topic in 🤫$9.95🤫
Perhaps you don't understand that the whole process is about the ... wait for it ... individual. Identifying, recruiting, visiting, hosting, and signing the individual. For a lot of these kids, they are the biggest thing to happen in their schools and towns in a long time, if not ever. Towns close down for their games. Their signing ceremonies are celebrated in the school gyms, surrounded by their families, coaches, teammates, friends, classmates, etc. This is the culmination of everything they have put into sports. Let them have their moment. This. College recruiting is not for the faint of hearts. The emotional swings and overwhelming volume of misinformation far exceeds the actual positions of the individuals and the coaches. The $9.95's and the diarrhea of analysts and recruirt-niks takes a practiced mind to sift through and process and digest the information, and ignore it, til the name is on the paper docusign. Don't ridicule each individual for taking the time to evaluate all the information available and making an informed decision, for them, regardless of how that fits your time table and preconceived notions. -

PhD; “Doctor of Philosophy,” which refers to the immense knowledge a student gains when earning the degree. The practical application of that knowledge after earning said degree is another story. Our PhD contributor has not made the distinction between committing and signing. -
Bum Phillips talked about the keys to being a good coach, one being to own the locker room. You're going to have some guys that are behind you and a few who aren't, and a lot of them somewhere in the middle. The key is keeping the guy's that aren't behind you away from the guys in the middle. Better not to intentionally introduce one of those "aren't behind you guys" into the mix.

Fuck the rankings; take a look behind the numbers. Listen to Sark's press conference. He's not done yet. He talks about each players attributes, the character of each person. How they identified a lot of these guys ~ 2 years ago and have watch them work and develop. We signed 4 guys who have a 3* composite ranking, which pulls our rankings down; a punter, an IOL, and 2 DL. I value the rankings of Bo Davis & Kyle Flood infinitely higher than anybody else. They got the guys they wanted very early in the process. Large humans with big frames that can move, that played other sports (BBall or Baseball). Sark joked about the recruiting guys catching up to his staffs evaluations. Adding a 3 year starter at DB, from Austin, and a 2 year starter at WR from the portal that bring an ethic and maturity to meld with a stable of new recruits. Sark talked about the EE's (~16 of 22), getting them on campus early for strength and conditioning. Having enough guys in the spring so the 1's go against the 3's and the 2's against the 4's, at the same time. FIFY. He said, "It Sucks!!!" Kids having to make a choice early to make sure they have a spot, and not being able to finish with the team they have been an integral part of all year. Sark is perfect for Texas. He talked about Jeff Choate, enticing him to leave a HC job at Montana State to be a LB coach at Texas, and starting 5&7. Choate is the new HC at Nevada, and still coaching for Texas. Sark shared his wisdom on balancing the old and new jobs with Choate, having done it twice. He talked about Mukuba's HS coach being on the Texas staff, and Chris Gilbert before him. He wished Gilbert a Happy Birthday in the press conference. Sarks people skills, his awareness and attention to detail pegs the meter, and will pay dividends for us over and over. Yes. Guys who weren't fully on board leaving last year as soon as they could v. guys putting in the work all year, having more and better guys in front of you, and encouraged by the coaches to transfer is much different. -
Just an FYi, I bought tickets for a couple of home games at DKR right before the game, and demand far exceeded the supply. All Texas-Ex's tickets were gone very early. Individual people trying to sell tickets over 2 games: one, which I bought. Buying from "scalpers" was almost non-existent, there were very few of them buying or selling, almost all trying to buy. I bought one from a scalper after looking for 30+ minutes. Bottom line, I think there is a lot of pent up demand for some Texas Football in the Big Easy. After a fuck-over from Seat Geek immediately before and after the CFP announcement, I got my tickets from Ticketmaster. Just looked, and similar tickets, all in, are about $40 more than I paid 2 weeks ago.

This is the $64,000 question! or ~ $75 Million ... or whatever Why have they not updated the official website? Is Klein the OC or not? Who, if anybody is recruiting? How can you identify and pursue transfers and recruits if you don't even have a coaching staff? Who is behind the transfer portal? Elko? Grad assistants? Looch? Does aggy have a website that transfers can self recruit and sign themselves up? Very bizarre.

Barry Bonds was a great baseball player, before steroids. Clearly, he benefited from the juice, but probably would have put up Hall of Fame without it. We’re at the point now where I don’t think there is a power program in 5A or 6A that isn’t recruiting. Define your terms. Power Program being a State Finalist team? I think there are a lot of large high schools committed to quality HS sports (power programs?) that will probably not advance deep into the football playoffs because they can not and do not do some of the things the single HS and open enrollment school districts do openly. They may still do some questionable things, but open recruiting isn't one of them. My info is dated, ~ 15 years ago. Katy ISD now has 10 HS, each between 3-4,000 students. The demographic differences across the district are huge, but they all share in revenue & expenses somewhat equally (No CR, but very democratic for a deep red area). They each have their own athletic booster clubs, which are "unregulated", and most certainly not equal. The primary benefits Katy HS gets, are gerrymandering attendance zones to include apartments, and school populations (Div 1 v. Div 2). Nothing that compares to what some other school districts do.

SEC! SEC! SEC! ... oops! That's what I think about when I see HS football in Texas. Pay for play teams, and "towns" with a single HS team that recruits players and keeps 100% of the tax revenue for one school and one team. Texas HS football used to be about stars from normal teams who built a following for leading their teams into the playoffs, Joe Washington & Earl & Billy Simms & Todd Dodge & Donnie Little & VY and ... If Katy & Cypress & Sugar Land & Alief & Pearland only had one select high school instead of 10 schools sharing players and resources within the same district, perhaps Texas HS football would look more representative. De Soto and Duncanville looked good yesterday. But let's not pretend they are playing by the same set of rules as everybody else. Not being assholes, for starters. Football, team football. I'll take a Jordan Whittington from Quero, or Johnathan Brooks from Halletsville, or VY from Houston-Madison, all day, every day, over most of those entitled "assholes" from the "private" high schools prevalent up north. These guys from regular high schools don't have to get that "me first ... look at me ... I'm a prick" attitude coached out of them before they learn how to contribute to a greater good.

Alabama's recruiting is interesting. As of now, Alabama has one Texas recruit: Casey Poe 4* IOL .9593, 6 4.5 290 If I recall, Saban has been to Dangerfield, TX twice in the last few weeks to see Aeryn Hampton, the 4* CB committed to Texas. With no disrespect to Mr. Hampton, but It wasn't long ago Saban could cherry pick Texas for the Waddle's & Brockermeyer's (Fuck the Brocks) of the world. It appears that Saban is wanting to get some more Texas kids on the roster to keep that channel open. And as a number of you have mentioned, Texas' response has been "Get the fuck out of here!" -
I don't pay for f*ckin shit, other than Burnt Ends ... but I've read a lot of f*ckin words about a lot of f*ckin kids going to a lot of f*ckin places to F*ck around, and best I can tell, nobody went any f*ckin where to do any f*ckin thing and didn't find out f*ckin shit. So where does that leave us? F*cked!!!

The 3 skill guys are not the product of S & C, quite the opposite. The big uglies LSU brought to Austin in 2019 were some of the worst conditioned D1 athletes I’ve seen in a long time. They live in Baton Rouge, and couldn’t handle the heat and humidity in a night game in Austin. “Holding the roster together and trying to salvage a recruiting class that was already coming apart at the seams prior to Jimbo Fisher’s departure …” Yeah, that’s not the narrative I remember … The picture of his office w/ the notice to the NFL is going to go over really well with recruits. The Tom Herman method of building a G5 staff to compete in a P4 world.
