2024 Texas Football Coaching and Support Staff Thread
It was a back shoulder throw to Rome Odunze. The incidental contact affected his footwork to the point he could not turn and jump for the ball, and it sailed over his head out of bounds. Great play by the DB. I was going to say fucking Penix hit every throw against Texas, which is kinda true. The reality is his receivers ran down the field untouched and went wherever they wanted, with our guys waiting for them to catch the ball before they tackled them. Babers talked about this months ago; if you have guys that can play press coverage, you do. If you don't, you don't. Both teams had good DB play, a lot of good open field tackles. Can't blame W's DB's when the RB's run untouched for 40 yards. Michigan had some imaginative play calling, lot of pre snap motion, pulling linemen, isolating fast guys in space. McCarthy's 4th quarter runs changed the game. They have a good team across the board and were well coached. Deserving Champions.

Back in the day, in ME 202, Introduction to Mechanical Engineering, we were given the task of building an "Aggie Cooler", a device to cool off over heated Aggies (the Association of Generally Gross Incompetent Egotists). It was well known when 2 or more Aggies got together, they would work themselves into a heated frenzy when talking about TSIPs (the Texas Society of Intellectual People). The Aggie Cooler was required to launch a water balloon from a safe distance (30 meters) to cool down the overheated Aggies. Please know that in your own way, you Surly Horn posters are continuing one of the most sacred of Longhorn traditions.

No reason to feel bad. (I know you don't.) In the year of Fucking Around and Finding Out, Stewart is the poster child of screwing up every thing possible in a situation that was heavily stacked in his favor. Being the top dog WR in the portal, and Steve "Second Chance" Sarkisian and Nick "The Rehabilitator" Saban won't give you the time of day, you fucked up, kid. Worthy initially gave off some suspect vibes, but when the helmets were strapped on, he gave everything he had, lowering his shoulder when he had too, and limping off the field, and coming back in, when he didn't. He earned respect by his performance on the field, not his antics off of it. That's a pretty text book comparison of developing talent in a complimentary way that serves both the team and the individual. Everybody talks about character and culture, but those things should be obvious without having to tell someone you have it.

Aggy 2024: Still waiting on the Looch 44

A lot of these Permian Basin, West Texas/New Mexico towns, "grew up" around the remote oil & gas discoveries. Notrees, Texas was a barren plain until Shell Oil built a Gas Processing Plant and a labor "camp", including planting trees, for the employees who worked there. Companies drilled for oil, and any associated gas production was flared at the individual wells. With increasing oil production, the volumes of flared gas reached a point where the flared gas was captured and sent to centralized processing facilities that removed the impurities (water, CO2, H2S (hydrogen sulfide), etc. and the higher valued Natural Gas Liquids, from the gas stream, ending up with a salable product, natural gas, that didn't smell or smoke. Out of necessity, these gas plants included power generation facilities. As production increased, more clean processed gas became available, and commercial power plants were constructed, to satisfy the growing demand.- 2024 Transfer Thread - The Pedantic Circlejerk

That mindset existed in the mid 70's, that George Woodard was better than Earl Campbell. They do it to themselves, starting at fish camp, that everything aggy is better, just because. They see what UT has, take their delusion to obtain/produce "similar" results, and end up with something less than what they could have had. It is not the buildings that are important, it is the results of the people in the buildings that matter.- Texas Recruiting Notes 2024: Bags Don't Beat Bankrolls
Trevor Gerland punted at Texas from ‘06-‘09. Went to my kids high school, was a 4.4 guy, all state in Football and track, finished second to Jamaal Charles at the 5A State Championship in the 110 m hurdles. Fastest punter I ever saw. It’s nice having multifaceted players.- Official Sugar Bowl road trip thread
People posted here about this. The combination of Texas Football, Sugar Bowl, New Orleans, New Years Weekend pointed to a massive clusterfuck Tuesday morning. No way I was gonna deal with an hour valet wait before a 500 mile road trip. We stayed in Metairie and we’re on the road before 10, had a 30 min (w/ lunch) slowdown/go around in BR (went by LSU). Ran into some rain an hour from Austin. Not a bad day for us.- How did/are you dealing with it?
Whiskey was involved. More later. Disappointed? Yes. Proud? So very proud. After starting with the first two passes batted down, we had a chance to win with a short pass on the last play of the game. This year far exceeded expectations and energized our fan base in a way that we are lucky to be a part of. Cherish it. “… other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play? My piece of the stock market dropped ~$20,000 yesterday. At least I got to enjoy spending my money, the old fashioned way, with cash. Going to The Big Easy, over New Years weekend, to see Texas take over New Orleans and play for a berth in the National Championship game Is as good as it gets. The Texas Kool Aid will never taste sweeter than it did this weekend. Met a lot of like minded souls, some old, some young, and the continuity of Longhorn love across generations can’t help but to make you feel good about where we are. Through an error in judgement, this whiskey drinking, firework watching, social security drawing, new year celebrating, 8th generation Texan, saw the southside of 2 am in the Quarter, on 1/1/2024. Woke up later, finished the remaining whiskey in the glass, and started getting ready for game day. Had some breakfast, got seated at a table next to a guy I used to work with, walked a bit, ended up at Mannings. Looking at the pictures on the walls, soaking it all in, I thought the next time I come here, Arch will have a place on the wall, wearing a Texas jersey. Sweet. ”Accidentally” walked into the Green Room where Bobby Burton was chatting with his guests. Talked a while with a grandad, his son and 11 year old grandson (T’Vondre Sweat is his favorite player.) Met some mid-70’s ladies: they have season tickets for Texas football, baseball, basketball, etc., travel to select away games. They’re trying to take it with ‘em, or having some fun on the way. Texas playing in the Sugar Bowl in Nuevo Orleans, plain ole good times. I used to live in Houston & Lafayette, so I knew I was driving. Had Taco’s a al Ninfa at Ninfa’s on Navigation, at 10:15 in the morning. Enjoy the ride…375 miles in 5 hours, including the trip to Ninfa’s (not the time to eat). Bobby Burton & guests. Recognize them? I started drinking whiskey way too early. Some guy parting the Red Sea? One of the many…Did I say Texas travelled well?- 2024 Transfer Thread - The Pedantic Circlejerk

Driving from Austin to NO Sunday morning. Should be a great day!!!- Negative Recruiting Your Own School: The aggy Screenshot Megathread
Thanks for posting. I real look at the man, not just the coach. I humble, multi-faceted man, that has faced adversity, been forced to look deep within himself, given a second chance in life, and came out the other side. Thankfully, behind the wheel at The University of Texas. So much good stuff here (I drank the entire keg of Kool Aid!). Staring down and beating adversity, and guiding and raising kids into decent people, gives one a perspective that is easy to build upon. Sark has been blessed to have earned so many different opportunities, primarily because he has always had the knowledge, drive and effort to succeed. He has a great personal story to tell, honest and with an open book, and at the end of the day, he is just a good, all around person. His personality resonates with like minded souls and his genuine concern for people, both coaches and players, serves him well. Kudo's to those that recognized the man behind the clip board and beat back the haters to get him here. Sark's destiny was to come lead Texas out of the desert wilderness, and he has given us older, occasional Surly Horns, a multi-season pass to enjoy a long ride into the burnt orange sunset.- Merry Christmas, you Surly assholes

Fantastic pickup. On a recruiting class of superlative people, and football players, he may be at the top. Learning to jump rope so he can learn to box so he can be quicker on the field. Epitome of dynamic playmaker. Lifting after a boxing session? Who does that? Looks like Dorsett in the hole w/ some Lam Jones open quarter gait. Hard to see why he wasn't a Day 1 priority. Who cares? We got him. Sark's QB room + WR room + RB room ...- 2024 WR Aaron Butler

Perhaps you don't understand that the whole process is about the ... wait for it ... individual. Identifying, recruiting, visiting, hosting, and signing the individual. For a lot of these kids, they are the biggest thing to happen in their schools and towns in a long time, if not ever. Towns close down for their games. Their signing ceremonies are celebrated in the school gyms, surrounded by their families, coaches, teammates, friends, classmates, etc. This is the culmination of everything they have put into sports. Let them have their moment. This. College recruiting is not for the faint of hearts. The emotional swings and overwhelming volume of misinformation far exceeds the actual positions of the individuals and the coaches. The $9.95's and the diarrhea of analysts and recruirt-niks takes a practiced mind to sift through and process and digest the information, and ignore it, til the name is on the paper docusign. Don't ridicule each individual for taking the time to evaluate all the information available and making an informed decision, for them, regardless of how that fits your time table and preconceived notions.- Texas Recruiting Notes 2024: Bags Don't Beat Bankrolls
PhD; “Doctor of Philosophy,” which refers to the immense knowledge a student gains when earning the degree. The practical application of that knowledge after earning said degree is another story. Our PhD contributor has not made the distinction between committing and signing.- 2024 Transfer Thread - The Pedantic Circlejerk
Bum Phillips talked about the keys to being a good coach, one being to own the locker room. You're going to have some guys that are behind you and a few who aren't, and a lot of them somewhere in the middle. The key is keeping the guy's that aren't behind you away from the guys in the middle. Better not to intentionally introduce one of those "aren't behind you guys" into the mix.- Texas Recruiting Notes 2024: Bags Don't Beat Bankrolls
Fuck the rankings; take a look behind the numbers. Listen to Sark's press conference. He's not done yet. He talks about each players attributes, the character of each person. How they identified a lot of these guys ~ 2 years ago and have watch them work and develop. We signed 4 guys who have a 3* composite ranking, which pulls our rankings down; a punter, an IOL, and 2 DL. I value the rankings of Bo Davis & Kyle Flood infinitely higher than anybody else. They got the guys they wanted very early in the process. Large humans with big frames that can move, that played other sports (BBall or Baseball). Sark joked about the recruiting guys catching up to his staffs evaluations. Adding a 3 year starter at DB, from Austin, and a 2 year starter at WR from the portal that bring an ethic and maturity to meld with a stable of new recruits. Sark talked about the EE's (~16 of 22), getting them on campus early for strength and conditioning. Having enough guys in the spring so the 1's go against the 3's and the 2's against the 4's, at the same time. FIFY. He said, "It Sucks!!!" Kids having to make a choice early to make sure they have a spot, and not being able to finish with the team they have been an integral part of all year. Sark is perfect for Texas. He talked about Jeff Choate, enticing him to leave a HC job at Montana State to be a LB coach at Texas, and starting 5&7. Choate is the new HC at Nevada, and still coaching for Texas. Sark shared his wisdom on balancing the old and new jobs with Choate, having done it twice. He talked about Mukuba's HS coach being on the Texas staff, and Chris Gilbert before him. He wished Gilbert a Happy Birthday in the press conference. Sarks people skills, his awareness and attention to detail pegs the meter, and will pay dividends for us over and over. Yes. Guys who weren't fully on board leaving last year as soon as they could v. guys putting in the work all year, having more and better guys in front of you, and encouraged by the coaches to transfer is much different.- 2024 LB Tyanthony Smith

Just an FYi, I bought tickets for a couple of home games at DKR right before the game, and demand far exceeded the supply. All Texas-Ex's tickets were gone very early. Individual people trying to sell tickets over 2 games: one, which I bought. Buying from "scalpers" was almost non-existent, there were very few of them buying or selling, almost all trying to buy. I bought one from a scalper after looking for 30+ minutes. Bottom line, I think there is a lot of pent up demand for some Texas Football in the Big Easy. After a fuck-over from Seat Geek immediately before and after the CFP announcement, I got my tickets from Ticketmaster. Just looked, and similar tickets, all in, are about $40 more than I paid 2 weeks ago. - ERCOT Urging For Energy Conservation
