  1. I'm terribly sorry for your loss @troph. What a beautiful tribute you penned above. He was lucky to have friends like you in his life and a caring spouse and extended family of friends that will dearly miss him.
  2. A friend of mine competed in Waco - he actually ran with me last year to train for a marathon but then decided to give the tri season a whirl. Finished 2nd in his age group and qualified for the 70.3 World Championship in New Zealand next November. Not bad for his rookie tri season.
  3. Well, this was the first time I trained through all of summer, and the work really paid off. I posted a 1:25:57 at the Hill Country Half Marathon on Saturday which earned me a 2nd overall male finish. I had a goal of 1:31, but the conditions were favorable, so I just went after it starting at mile 2 and got locked in to a good pace. I feel really encouraged with the results heading into my marathon in early December.
  4. With my apologies to a couple great Kansas teams, this feels like the biggest conference game since Nebraska was in the conference.
  5. Houston is set up beautifully for a PR. It just depends on the weather. I ran it this past January and PRed by a significant margin thanks in part to early morning temps of mid 40s. The course is as flat as can be - I think there's one small climb at mile 12. Some people complain about the rolling hills through Memorial Park in the last few miles, but I honestly didn't notice any memorable elevation changes. It may just be that even small hills feel painful on fatigued legs that late in the race.
  6. Think I found your results and if so, well done!! I can't imagine what it's like to compete at Kailua-Kona among the titans of your sport. It's a hell of an accomplishment to just make it there, but to post times like you did is incredible.
  7. Found a Deadspin link talking about the Doha marathon and was reading through the comments section when I stumbled upon this short documentary about the 1904 St. Louis Olympics marathon. Wow.
  8. I'm so over this heat. I check the extended forecast first thing every morning, and it's a beating. Just give me something below 70 to look forward to if it's 10 days from now.
  9. The Senate, Electoral College and gerrymandering have allowed for the tyranny of the minority.
  10. This is the first time I've trained throughout the summer months, and I feel like I'm getting more adjusted to the heat. I was told that would be the case which I found laughable. I'm not hitting marathon pace when I incorporate workouts into runs, but I'm getting close (+15 - +30 seconds). I've been more focused on my effort than being a slave to my Garmin. Summer training also pays huge dividends come fall and winter due to fitness level. I had immediate validation of that when I was in Chicago last week and was blessed with mild morning temps. I did 13 miles at close to a steady marathon pace without any sort of workout incorporated. It felt great. There's a cruel blessing in being in a climate that is brutal and unforgiving four months out of the year, and it's that you're prepared for almost anything come race day. I can't imagine how runners not acclimated to warmer temps must feel if temps go north of 70 on a race day. I haven't done a fall race yet, and by no means do I think I would try to PR at one, but the thought of training for one during peak summer isn't as dreadful anymore. Also, salt tabs are by new best friend. Don't risk anything in the heat when it comes to electrolyte levels.
  11. Matthew McConaughey and some tech exec dudes announced as owners.
  12. Ownership partners and/or stadium sponsor.
  13. I'm leaning towards a tech company - either homegrown (Dell) or with established roots (Samsung).
  14. Eric and Wendy are my #1A and #1B. Significant drop off after that. Wendy was way down on my list, but she had a late career renaissance that skyrocketed her up the chart.
  15. Lifelong Giants fan here, so I'll give my perspective. I'd like to keep Bumgarner and maybe ship off a reliever (Watson) to address something like infield help. The thing about the Giants is that the WS teams never looked good on paper. That's why it's no surprise Derka says they wouldn't compete against the Yankees, Astros, etc. that are far more talented. But guys like Aubrey Huff, Cody Ross, Travis Ishikawa and Marco Scutaro were the reasons the team hung 3 banners in 5 years. Not exactly household or marquee names. Giants teams have always relied on solid rotation, good bullpen and timely hitting from guys that rise up at the right moments. Zaidi seems to have found one of those Huff, Ross, Scutaro types in Alex Dickerson. He's not exactly a journeyman, but he was written off by the Padres and has found new life with the Giants. The other core guys from past WS teams that have either battled injuries or slumps are all showing glimpses of returning to their former selves albeit older. Posey, Belt, Crawford and Panik are seasoned guys when it comes to October baseball, so it would be interesting to see how they step up if given a chance in the playoffs. The other thing no one has talked about is the return of Cueto. He's facing live batters now and is on track to return in September. Bum - Cueto as a 1-2 could make things interesting from a top of the rotation perspective especially combined with the Giants' deep, quality relief staff. A lot of the elements that were there in '10, '12, '14 and even '16 (eliminated by the eventual WS Champion Cubs) are there again with this '19 team. Of course, they can't keep winning at this pace (17-3 in last 20 games). They can only hope this type of baseball and mentality will continue, and maybe it will be enough to earn them a WC berth.
  16. 13-2 in the last 15 games. It certainly makes the front office decision-making difficult ahead of the trade deadline.
  17. Hillary got 3 million more votes. 2018 midterms say hi.
  18. Man, you crushed that course. Well done, and a hearty congrats!! It looks like that Buffalo Springs IM is attracting some top flight talent making your results all the more impressive.
  19. Happy 5th birthday to me. I'm a long time lurker on this thread but have never posted. Thanks to everyone here for displaying the courage to be candid about your past and in turn provide support for those walking down our same paths. Keep doing what you're doing. It makes a huge impact for those of us who aren't active on the thread (I suspect there are many more like me).
  20. It's across from the Expo Center and is serviced by Cap Metro, so not exactly in the sticks. And the original site was within the city limits, but the neighborhood opposed it. Thus, they moved to where there were no neighbors.
  21. Formula 1 doesn't have any accompanying hometown allegiances or pride. To the extent Austin takes ownership of the team, it will be a successful franchise.
  22. Well, of course. You're reserving a place in line, and most people probably put down deposits along with other people they intend to sit with. Then, you'll end up choosing seats from the account that has the best spot in the line among that group. That said, I have no doubt that overall season ticket purchases will still be very high. Season 1 should be a sellout for most games. It's the novelty of having a pro franchise, and it's the only pro game in town. How the franchise does in year 2, 3 and 4 will be the real test of the market, and I think that will largely come down to the game day experience and atmosphere.
  23. I did the same and came up with the same range. Cheap seats around $500 up to around $2K for premium seats with club access + parking. That's for 20 matches - 17 regular season plus a few extra matches. Austin FC president did say their cheapest season tickets would be close to the $20 level that they guaranteed Austin City Council as part of the stadium deal (as in a certain percentage of tickets have to be priced at $20).
