I guess I’m fascinated by the game theory aspect of all this. In an Economics class, the prof said that the assumption most Economics is based on is β€œpeople make decisions in their own interest”. This conference realignment highlights flaws in that assumption- administrators that have a lot of power, but will only govern for a few years, make short term decisions that have negative long term implications.Β
So, fans enjoy storming the field and giving shit to players. Coaches enjoy voting Texas down in a poll. ADs pressure a conference to limit promotion of the biggest brand. All decisions that have a near term benefit. Then, when Texas leaves (and it was hard- a lot of time to wait out the political situation, a lot of money), it hears, β€œyou selfish asshole! And, hey- what about the tradition? Didn’t we have some good times?”

All of these TV ratings highlight just how much free riding was going on.Β

Good post, but except theΒ β€œpeople make decisions in their own interest” part didn’t mean people will make those decisions based on rational, long term thinking.

Big asterisk on Wordle today. My sister and I exchange Wordle results every day, including screenshots of our guesses. I’m always careful not to send my screenshot until she solves. Because I’m on CT and she’s on MT, I’m almost always the first to solve. However, today she was the first to solve and automatically sent her results and screenshot of her guesses, which of course includes the solution. So I recreated what my guesses might have been had I not seen the solution before I started solving. There is no guarantee I would have actually guessed that. In particular, I think it unlikely I would have guessed the middle letter so early.Β

Normal guys get 5 to play 4. He has +1 from Covid and +1 from medical redshirt.

    Seventh and final year.

But it doesn’t sound like his 2nd redshirt (first year at Utah in 2019) was a medical redshirt.Β

Traylor is 55 that is young for a HC, he has a LONG leash at UTSA so he has a chance to bounce back from a bad season or two and get back to 8 or 9 wins and become "hot" again if he does drop off after this year

Maybe I’m reading this wrong, but 55 is not young for a HC. If he has a bad season or two, then bounces back, he’ll be 57 or 58. That leaves him with probably one legitimate shot remaining at a prime HC job.

At 55, I’d take a $5mil/year job that may only give me 3 years to produce before I’d gamble on a 2-3 year rebuild at UTSA.

In fact, I’d make the move to a different UTSA-level program that actually supports the FB program and rebuild that before I’d gamble trying to rebuild UTSA.Β

The thing about the SEC is that there are more teams like Texas that get everyone's extra attention.Β  Maybe not rivals, but any time OU or Texas or 'Bama or Georgia or LSU come to town, the faithful will be extra amped. The benefit to there being so many top targets is that you won't always get their best shot, because it's impossible/exhausting to get "up" that often during the season.

In the Big XII it was Texas and OU and that was all. Maybe Nebraska back when they were still Nebraska, but we slayed that giant.

Except for aggy and Piggie, it will be unusual for a team to play even 3 of those 5 in a single year.Β

  8. 5 hours ago, Frank Drebin said:

True on that. Β But for most SEC teams, they have other teams they care about more. Β Besides Okie, Ags and Arky. Β

LSU is going to care more about Bama. Β Bama has several others they care about more. Β Same with every other school. Β
    Β

They won’t be preparing for us in the summer. Β Or holding out questionable players the week before so they’re healthy for us. Β They won’t make their season by beating us. Β We are currently a jihad game for the other 9 of 9 teams in the Big 12. Β We won’t be for 12 of the other 15 teams in the new SEC. Β

I’d bet that even before we play all the SEC teams, we’ll be in every team’s top 2 or 3 hated opponents. It won’t get a whole lot easier for Texas in that regard.Β

Christmas is for kids. Β I don’t give or receive gifts from other adults. Β In my family everyone has a charity of choice and we all donate to each other’s charities whatever you would have spent on a gift. Β Before we came up with that system a few years ago I told them all that if they buy me anything they are going to have to take ownership of some random item from my house to make room for whatever item they gave me that I would never bought for myself. Β  Give me another bbq thermometer and I’m giving you my old used spatula. Β Give me a coffee table book and I’m sending your ass home with that lamp I regret buying a few years ago.

From my own kids I only ask for experiences, even something simple and cheap like movie tickets for us to see something together or a gift card to a nice restaurant for us to all use together. Β Β
    Β

My wife and I (mostly I) tried to push the charitable gifts between adults thing about a decade ago. It didn’t catch on, so we started making donations to our kids’ (age 24-30) charity of choice in addition to gifts. It still hasn’t replaced regular gifts. We’re about ready to ditch the whole concept and donate the whole amount to the charity of our choice.Β
