  1. My wife’s uncle (wife’s dad and his mom lived with this uncle’s family for a while prior to WWII) was a ball turret gunner. His plane was shot down by the Germans and he spent the rest of the war as a POW. He had a human skull on a shelf in his home office, but no one was allowed to ask him about it. He wrote a biographical manuscript later in life, and that was the extent of what he would say about his war experience. He didn’t even mention the skull. He taught HS history and became superintendent of a central Texas school district.
  2. Sprinter Jim Hines, 76… https://www.cnn.com/2023/06/06/sport/jim-hines-sprinter-death-spt-intl/index.html
  3. Good read, unless you were in the Army. The Marines were there first (as usual) and felt the Army was hindering their advance across the island.
  4. I know it’s an absolutely hilarious joke, but I asked both of my daughters who waited tables for years, and neither said they ever had problems with after-church crowd. Maybe it’s a Texas thing.
  5. Army Brat’s family photo album consists of pics of each family member’s favorite firearm. Sometimes, it includes a photograph of the person.
  6. You forgot zee one in zee chamber!
  7. Nancy just trying to keep up.
  8. My mother had 3 mitral valve replacements in 2 years back in the 90s. The first was a mechanical “flap” design which failed when scar tissue started to grow over it to the point that it almost completely sealed off. The second was a mechanical “”screw” design that became infected. It took them entirely too long to identify that the source of her infection symptoms was the valve and to get back a culture that would allow them to identify the bacteria and get her on the right antibiotics. I kept asking them to assume the worst and bring out the big boy antibiotics, but they waited until the valve was rotted to the point that the surgeon didn’t even need a scalpel to remove it. The third was a porcine (pig) valve that lasted almost 5 years until the f’n C got her. Note: Not trying to sound pessimistic, just pointing out that an animal valve did the trick.
  9. I could never get those damn things to work like they did in the commercials. Then, they always developed literal kinks. Fuck those worthless SOBs.
  10. I think the cop hears the lighter, smells something burning, turns his head to see what’s happening in back, and turns the steering wheel in the process. My grandma used to get mad at my grandpa for doing that on gravel roads, except he was just checking out the neighbors’ crops.

  12. She bought life insurance on you before that trip.
  13. Facts…schmacts. I guess that wasn’t his parachute after all.
  14. It would be fun to out the average Surly poster for everything they’ve liked. And, no, this doesn’t mean I support Shemy (although I will admit that, at first, I thought those were his pronouns).
  15. For starters, I’m for withholding the name of the accused until they are indicted, especially if it is the type of crime that protects the alleged victim’s identity. I’m not quite there yet, but perhaps not identifying the accused until they are actually convicted, unless the accuser is willing to be identified.
  16. They? Did you honestly say that to your DIL?
  17. Looks like the pilot ejected and floated down into the fireball. Terrible way to go.
