  1. Terribly disappointing but fairly predictable from Netflix. I donā€™t know how they can do certain things like The Crown so damn well, but then fuck up almost everything else. This story has incredible source material. What a waste. Like I said above, I love the book and Iā€™m about to start a reread, but Iā€™m wondering if Iā€™ll even watch the series. If reviews stay this shitty, Iā€™ll probably pass and pretend they never did it.
  2. South Carolina is pretty bad though. They didnā€™t score a TD against Mizzou and aggy has a better defense.
  3. There should be a way for qualified individuals to volunteer for jury duty within a certain time slot during the year. It would give them a predictable time window vs getting a random summons at an inconvenient time on short notice. And maybe if people do that and then get selected and serve on a jury, reward them with a meaningful tax break, instead of the joke of $12/day or whatever. The system is clearly broken when a large percentage of intelligent working professionals make every attempt to get out of it. It seems like a fixable or at least improvable problem, if the system could update the terms to make it more favorable. Economists should be able to figure it out.
  4. I searched and only saw one post buried in the Apple TV thread. Those mega threads suck for TV shows because good stuff gets buried in them, then most of us don't notice the suggestion, and for the people that do keep up, it's hard to simultaneously have focused discussions of individual series. Anyways, this is a single season of 8 episodes. Interesting premise and I thought the story was great. Should be pretty enjoyable for anyone who likes wine, and I definitely felt the need to have a glass poured while watching. Chateauneuf-du-Pape would be a fantastic choice. The cast was entirely unknown to me but I thought it was well-acted. The dialogue is part English, part French, part Japanese, with subtitles throughout.
  5. I always see people talk about booking business class to Europe on points, but for the life of me, Iā€™m ignorant about how to pull that off. Whenever I search the various airlines, itā€™s 300k+ points for flights I would be interested in. Iā€™m DFW based. Thereā€™s a nice nonstop flight from DFW-CDG on AA that takes about 9 hours overnight. This past summer I booked it with Chase points at the equivalent cash rate for main cabin, hoping to then upgrade to at least premium economy. AA made a reasonable offer for business class so I then paid cash for that, but they donā€™t always offer that, or sometimes the price is still outrageous. If I search that same flight for random dates next May, itā€™s 498k points. Iā€™m not married to that particular flight or to AA, but I am usually picky about schedule. I prefer a nonstop that leaves DFW on a Thurs/Fri afternoon/evening and returns the following Sat/Sun. Iā€™m okay flying into most major cities in Europe, but Iā€™m partial to France and Italy. Whatā€™s the angle here? Are there certain cards or loyalty programs I should be loading up on? Or does it require me to be flexible enough to fly in off-peak months and make a connection in the eastern U.S. before flying to Europe?
  6. As much as I hate agreeing with you, half the posters in the Astros thread were saying things like ā€œfuck this teamā€ when they were 3-4 days shy of winning the division in the regular season. Terrible fans. Tomorrow gonna be fun.
  7. Is there a tour guide service you are planning to use, or just doing it on your own? Do you know which chateaux you will visit? I have been to Chateau de Chambord, Chateau de Chenonceau, and Chateaux dā€™Amboise. They were all great, but they arenā€™t extremely close to Tours, so just wondering your transportation plan.
  8. I wanted to like the book but found it rather boring. Even the races became monotonous because he would describe how hard they were rowing, and then 5 pages later, they would row harder. There were some good parts but lots of it drug for me.
  9. No one with half a brain thought that to be true. Itā€™s very rare in the history of this rivalry that either team is too talented to lose to the other team.
  10. OU was always going to be a tough game. We should be a favorite in every remaining game. Iā€™ll worry about additional losses if they occur, but itā€™s a miserable way to watch sports if you resign yourself to mediocrity in a year when you appear poised for success.
  11. History is a lot less relevant when the rules of the game change significantly. The format of the Big 12 championship game changed in 2017. Please name all the years since then in which we lost to OU but won the rest of our games.
  12. Losing to OU does nothing to our chances of winning the conference. If we win the rest of our games, we play them again in December for the conference championship. This is 2023, not 2008.
  13. Itā€™s a team sport. I donā€™t understand the need to absolve certain members of the team from their share of the loss. Quinn is part of this team and his play was far from perfect, so he shares the blame for this loss just like everyone else. Maybe if he went 31-37 with one turnover that didnā€™t directly result in points, that would be fair. But, he threw a stupid pass for a pick deep in our own territory on the 2nd offensive play of the game that gave OU an easy 7-0 lead. Just a dumb decision that cost us big time, and meant we were playing from behind from the very beginning. The second pick I donā€™t really blame him for. The fumble is mostly on him, and even though it was 3rd down, we gave them the ball on our end of the field, then forced a punt, then drove and settled for a FG, so perhaps that loss of field position was significant? Iā€™m not blaming Quinn any more or less than anyone else. I think a lot of the blame is directed at the coaches and thatā€™s fair, but none of the good or bad plays happened in a vacuum. Itā€™s a 4 quarter game that we lost by less than a touchdown. We can point to completion percentages or any individual stats, but at the end of the day, we took home a loss, and thatā€™s the only statistic that matters.
  14. We should move up to #8 after our bye week with either Oregon or Washington losing. I also wouldnā€™t be surprised if USC loses to ND.
  15. I do not blame Quinn specifically for this loss, but I donā€™t see how you can say the fumble didnā€™t cost us anything. We lost by 4 points so every stalled drive or turnover cost us everything, regardless of who or why the turnover happened. The first pick was definitely on Quinn and set the tone early in the game. The second pick was not on Quinn. Completion percentage is great, but wins are better. Gabriel went 23-38 and took home the Golden Hat and a 6-0 record.
  16. Itā€™s not a very good sine. Hopefully more info is revealed so this can be squared up.
  17. Watched the first episode and agree that I don't particularly love any teams or hate any teams. Won't miss the brother and sister combo and there was definitely something weird about their relationship. The deaf dad and son seem cool. The black guy brothers seem cool. Texan dad and daughter are alright. A few of the teams seem to lack much of a competitive drive, which is kind of boring to include teams like that because it's like the SEC scheduling cupcakes like App State. I'd prefer a season stacked with good teams. I like that they are back to flying commercial, but it seems like TAR has pre-booked 2-3 flights and teams will just fill those flights in order of airport arrival. I really liked the old days when teams could book any flights they choose, either at a travel agent or at the airport, and watching them take gambles on close connections that could either pay off big or be disastrous. That was good stuff, but I think the complicated logistics of air travel will prevent that from ever being part of the show again.
  18. I ate at Tre Mogli a couple of times. Food was decent and Iā€™m particular about Italian food. What I didnā€™t like is that their tables were awkwardly long for 2 people. I realize thatā€™s an odd criticism, which kinda shows how bizarre the situation was, but it makes conversation awkward throughout dinner, and it was enough of a reason for me to not go back. So I wonā€™t miss them.
  19. I read the book when it came out and vaguely remember liking it, but for the life of me I canā€™t remember much about the plot. The trailer looks good though.
  20. Felipe Armenta has had great success with his other restaurants - Pacific Table, Press Cafe, Tavern, Mariaā€™s, and Le Margot. He seems to have a magic touch, but those places mostly combine a good ambiance with a somewhat upscale menu, and no one looks for that in BBQ. Itā€™s hard to envision F1 Smokehouse having similar success for him.
  21. State flag is ugly Stop playing boomer sooner Take the loss pussy
  22. We took our kiddo to her first Longhorn game this weekend. We retreated to the alumni center for a little bit in the first half, but we spent the second half in the stadium and stayed for The Eyes. She enjoyed most of it, having plenty of new things to look at and being the center of attention for a lot of nearby fans. Whether she eventually goes to UT or chooses a different path, it was a special moment for us.
  23. And also, how much energy gets used in the production of a new aluminum can, as well as energy needed to recycle a used can?
  24. Honest question - do we know for sure that aluminum and glass are significantly better? Just for simplicity, if you are choosing between a Coke in a plastic bottle and a Coke in a can, is the can actually a ā€œgoodā€ choice from an environmental standpoint, or merely a ā€œless badā€ choice? What is the actual impact of that can, both from a manufacturing standpoint and a recycling/disposal standpoint? I have a lot of plastic guilt, which definitely influences my purchasing habits, but like you said, itā€™s impossible to completely get away from it. I also struggle with knowing if my alternative purchasing options are truly better, and it seems like industry wants to make this intentionally confusing, or completely distract consumers from the topic.
