  1. Maybe White Gladis attacked the sub? If so, good for her. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/gladis-whale-orca-boat-attacks-gibraltar-b2347572.html
  2. Maybe this is actually an elaborate kidnapping attempt by the people running OceanGate. Get a couple of billionaires to voluntarily get locked into a small container under the guise of having exclusive access to see the Titanic, tell the public the submarine is missing, transport the sub to an undisclosed location, then hold the billionaires hostage and demand a large ransom from their families.
  3. I know I shouldnā€™t be surprised by human stupidity at this point, but Hamish Harding surprises me a little bit. I only know what I read on his wiki, but he has previously been on a sub that went to the Challenger Deep. You would think he would have enough experience to recognize the red flags here, but maybe that experience just made him cocky and careless?
  4. I thought the show was more interesting when it was focused on the mystery of the silo, where it came from, whatā€™s outside, etc. Over the last 2-3 episodes it has shifted towards the power struggle between Juliet and judicial/mayor, which feels pretty generic to me. Also, I think the actor playing Sims is not that great. I looked him up and was surprised to see thatā€™s Common, who apparently switched to being an actor a long time ago and Iā€™ve been oblivious. Many of his lines are flat and his inflection seems off. Reminds me of Vin Diesel. I like Juliet and Billings, but the rest of the characters Iā€™m struggling with.
  5. I have a ton of cherry tomatoes right now. Also some cucumbers, Shishito peppers, bell peppers, and San Marzano tomatoes.
  6. Maybe now they can get a new sub and sell a tour to see the wreckage of the first sub. Itā€™s a good business model that can generate new opportunities for itself.
  7. Just finished reading The Wager by David Grann. Really enjoyed it. He reminds me of Erik Larson in the way he researches and writes about historical events. About to start The Lost City of Z.
  8. Sad to hear about Cormac. Probably my favorite author.
  9. Yes, we did watch it. It gives a glimpse of the food culture but his specific recommendations are now out of date. Still a little helpful though. Love Bourdain so Iā€™ll take any advice he ever gave.
  10. Yeah, somewhat. I booked 2 hotels, one in Alghero in the northwest and one in Porto Rotondo near Costa Smeralda. We decided to skip Cagliari and the southern part of the island due to only having a week, and we are most interested in the eastern coast with its dramatic cliffs and various beaches. We can hopefully charter a boat up the the Maddalena archipelago as well. I need to quit procrastinating and book flights.
  11. So I opened up the HBO Max max app because I saw this new series The Idol premiered and I wanted to watch the trailer. Normally a new drama series by a proven director like Sam Levinson would be front and center when you open the app, but instead, I see that wanker Guy Fieri shoving food into his mouth and marketing God knows what bullshit reality eating show. I have to scroll down and hunt for The Idol and then there is no option to actually watch the trailer, so I have to go to YouTube for that. [Roy]Fuuuuuckā€¦[/Kent]
  12. The first 3 episodes of Silo were magical but now they are trying too hard to virtue signal about not sharing relics from your exes and it beats you over the head about the threat of cleaning, so woke to the point that itā€™s not even funny anymore.
  13. Our 5 month old will be staying with grandparents while we go to St. Barth.
  14. Just got back from Napa and Carmel. About to go to St. Barth. Later in the summer will be Sardinia. Might squeeze in a Colorado fly fishing trip.
  15. Iā€™m also of the opinion that Tom has emotionally moved on from Shiv. She asked him if they had a future and he was pretty damn apathetic with his ā€œI honestly donā€™t knowā€ response. Gone are the days of him eagerly welcoming her back. Shiv and the entire Roy family shat all over him for a long enough period of time that he gave that dream up. Heā€™s now accepting the CEO position as the only remaining positive that he can get in this situation. Shiv can fuck whoever she wants, which she always did anyways. Their marriage is a sham that holds a small amount of convenience but nothing more.
  16. Loved it. Pretty much a perfect finale that delivered exactly what it needed to and stayed true to the overall series.
  17. I just canceled Netflix last week. I guess Iā€™ll reactivate it long enough to watch this.
  18. Must feel pretty awful to be the friends who dared him. Young guys dare each other to do stupid shit all the time, and maybe it was so outlandish they didnā€™t expect him to actually do it, but now heā€™s dead and thatā€™s a heavy weight to carry.
  19. I thought the finale was good and it was true to the overall show. I couldā€™ve done with a little less of the back and forth with Shiv in this episode, but it did serve the purpose of allowing them to have a brief moment of fake happiness before blowing it all apart. Each of the Roy siblings was terrible in their own way, and none of them would be good at the CEO position. Itā€™s a fitting ending that none of them would get the thing they wanted the most, especially Kendall who has felt entitled to it from the very first episode. I like that Tom ended up CEO, mainly because he was always treated like a second class citizen by the Roy family and heā€™s the only one still involved in their business, even if heā€™s just a puppet for Matsson. Tom has always been slightly less terrible in my book, due to him being an outsider who did something to make a name for himself, rather than assuming the world was his birthright. I think heā€™s a little more competent for his role in the company, but itā€™s obviously not why he was chosen in the end. Not sure how to interpret Shiv and Tomā€™s relationship in the end. On the one hand, you could say heā€™s a cuck of the highest order, listening to Matsson say he wants to fuck Shiv and still going along with it without protest. On the other hand, I think Tom has considered their dead for some time and itā€™s purely business for him moving forward. In the past, he seemed to always welcome Shiv back, and when she asked him about the prospect of a real relationship, his answer was ā€œI honestly donā€™t know.ā€ If there are any winners in all of this, it would be Gerri, Frank, and Karl. They got what they wanted and can ride off into the sunset.
  20. I havenā€™t been to a Chiliā€™s in 10+ years but I would say Press Cafe has far better food than anything Chiliā€™s serves, plus their location is great. Chiliā€™s has bad food and sterile generic bad locations. So no, they are not the Chiliā€™s of brunch. There are other places in town I typically prefer for brunch, but Press Cafe is a reasonable option on occasion, especially when the weather is nice and you want to have brunch outside.
  21. Press Cafe has a great outdoor space. When the weather is nice, thatā€™s hard to beat. Their food is okay and their service is usually slow.
  22. Headed to Napa for the first time today. Tried to go 4 years ago and our dog got incredibly sick so we had to cancel last minute. Then Covid. Then California caught on fire. Finally making it happen, but if thereā€™s an earthquake or anything like that, itā€™s definitely my fault. We got a driver for tomorrow and will be visiting Stagsā€™ Leap, Regusci, and a couple others. I tend to drink more French wine but Iā€™m excited about this. I also fully expect to get some Pliny this week, which itā€™s been way too long for me on that front. After a couple days in Napa, we are heading down to Carmel for a few nights. Got a boat one day, probably go down to Big Sur for another day. I have been there before but it was years ago. Should be a good time.
  23. I watched the first 4 episodes and Iā€™m enjoying it, although there is a lot of suspension of disbelief over little things - Where do they get batteries? How have all computers not failed after 140 years? Lightbulbs? How do they maintain breathable air? Infectious disease? I can mostly look past those issues for now. It felt from the beginning like they are being lied to about the outside world, which makes them prisoners. Assuming thatā€™s how this pans out, it feels like Iā€™ve seen this story before, both in the movie The Island and the TV series Ascension. The details were a little different, but the general idea of keeping a group of people captive in an enclosed environment was basically the same. Iā€™m hopeful this will be different, and curious how that will be.
  24. In the interest of closing out this saga, the package thief paid me the full $982 via Venmo for the stolen package. I dropped the police case as a result. Without knowing the full details on her side, it would appear that she paid full price for clothes that she likely sold for a fraction of the cost. I would also assume she lost her job as property manager of that particular Airbnb. I feel like thatā€™s enough punishment and hopefully a life lesson for her to not commit petty crimes of opportunity.
  25. I half expect Mattson to name Greg as CEO in title only, especially after they went out drinking together and he knows Greg is someone he can control.
