  1. Heading to South Beach for a long weekend next month. Just the wife and myself, staying at SLS. Any recs for places to eat and drink? Will probably head down to Nikki Beach for a brunch or lunch because we generally like the Nikki Beach scene. What else? Is the pool party at SLS any good or just a bro-fest? Other pool parties or daytime hangout spots we should consider? Paging ChiTownDoc.
  2. Everyone thought Shaka was a good hire and he was a huge bust. Everyone agreed Chris Beard was a home run hire and he apparently chokes women. We have a guy that led us to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since the iPhone 1 was new and George Bush was in office, and we’re thinking about not keeping him because we think we’re entitled to a better coach? History does not agree with the idea that we can hire a guaranteed winner.
  3. I finished out the game today. There is some info revealed through voice recorders and a journal that makes the Fireflies, the medical staff, and Marlene look a little more legit and good intentioned than what we get in the show. They seem to be genuinely trying and hopeful for a vaccine. Despite that, they didn’t communicate with Joel and Ellie at all, and their brute force approach resulted in a hostile situation that got everyone killed. If you plan to save humanity, it might help to have some bedside manner. I killed the doctor and nurses because I spent time picking up ammo and didn’t want that to be in vain. They’re NPCs, who cares. Got Ellie back.
  4. I’ve had a busy weekend but I just wanted to stop and say Hook ‘em, fuck aggy, fuck Baylor, fuck Pedo State, fuck Kentucky, fuck Shaka Smart, fuck Kansas, fuck Duke, fuck Chris Beard, and fuck aggy again. May next weekend be even better than this one.
  5. In 1 year as INTERIM coach, Rodney Terry has won 2 more March Madness games than Shaka won as HEAD coach in 5 years. Charlie Strong and Shaka Smart have won the same number of March Madness games at Texas.
  6. Lol Marquette should’ve known what they were getting. Making it to the round of 32 might be his peak for them.
  7. Good thing I bet the over on these 2 shitty offenses.
  8. Damn, loved him in The Wire and Bosch. Way too young.
  9. Fuck Chris Beard. I look forward to him failing at Ole Miss, losing horribly at Moody where the crowd holds up mugshot cutouts, getting piss drunk afterwards, finding himself in a threesome of despair with Trevor Bauer and Amber Heard, and then ending things in a David Carradine autoerotic asphyxiation blaze of glory.
  10. They've made him into such a little bitch over the past season that it would be hard as a viewer to suddenly welcome him back to the good side, especially if it's in a way where he is the guy who saves the day against Rupert. Not saying it can't be done, but it's an uphill battle for sure. Although maybe it's a life lesson about forgiveness that they're already teaching us through Ted's presser and his refusal to go after Nate.
  11. Oh ok. I didn’t realize that shut down entire streets and required police to supervise. I guess it’s also spring break so lots of people trying to go.
  12. I took it that way as well, and I think Joel did too, which further motivated him to go on a rampage to save her.
  13. I find it amusing that certain people have determined EEAAO is the measuring stick for who appreciates good films and who is better off sticking to Marvel movies. In the history of movies, we have now found the ONE film that can do that. There is no room for subjective tastes in this discussion. You either like the movie (you “get it”) and you’re a film aficionado, or you don’t like the movie (you “don’t get it”) and you’re a person who struggles to understand things and has generally poor taste. My favorite movies are The Godfather 1 and 2. I reverse the order occasionally. Both widely regarded as being amongst the top 10 greatest films ever made. But I know people who don’t like them and that’s completely fine, it says nothing about them other than they didn’t enjoy watching The Godfather. Maybe mob movies or violence aren’t their thing, I don’t care. Some of you remind me of Derka when he first discovered scripted drama television.
  14. Something going on around the zoo or TCU? Police had blocked a lot of intersections along Rosedale to keep people from turning south on Forest Park and University.
  15. The more I think about it, the more I think Joel didn’t have much of a choice. The path he took is the path most people would take in his position. What did they know about the procedure planned for Ellie? What were the risks? How likely was it that she would die? How likely was it that the procedure would get humanity any closer to having a cure? What were the qualifications of the medical staff? Was the doctor a neurosurgeon or a quack veterinarian that was the closest thing the Fireflies could find? Considering they knocked Joel out and separated him from Ellie without discussing any of those things, he has to be pretty damn skeptical of the operation. His choices were: A) Blindly trust them, hope she didn’t die, hope they found a cure B) Kill them, rescue Ellie, live to fight another day, and maybe a better opportunity arises later How could you not pick B?
  16. I understood EEAAO and still didn’t care for it. I did not expect to like Top Gun 2 and I was surprised to find it highly entertaining and fun to watch. They did a good job IMO. What are you implying that says about someone? Just because a movie wins Best Picture and some people don’t like it, does not mean those people are incapable of understanding good movies or unsophisticated in their tastes. It just means they don’t like that particular movie.
  17. CODA was great. Power of the Dog was awful.
  18. There’s a thread with some info: https://www.surlyhorns.com/board/topic/10064-croatia-travel/#comment-1435490
  19. I’m assuming no one knew Ellie was immune until she got bit in the mall. How would anyone have known prior to that? And I suppose after the mall incident, Marlene kept her for holding out of respect for her mom? Seems a little out of character because everyone else gets immediately shot.
  20. I didn’t watch The Oscars because I was preoccupied with TLOU and we had company over. I do like The Oscars as a loose guide for what films may be worth checking out, knowing that I might discover a few gems I wouldn’t have seen otherwise, and also knowing I won’t like some of them, nor will I agree with every award selection. Like most people, I really enjoyed Top Gun Maverick. It was surprisingly fun to watch. I realize that isn’t the type of film the Best Picture award typically goes to, but I think it’s unfortunate that a movie can be that well made and appeal to an extremely broad audience, and not have a chance at winning. Oh well. I thought The Fablemans and All Quiet on the Western Front were both excellent. Also really loved Triangle of Sadness but I wouldn’t expect it to win. Banshees didn’t do it for me as much as everyone else. I think I get it, but I probably wasn’t in the right mood to receive and appreciate it. I think I like it more in hindsight than I did upon viewing, so maybe it’s worth a rewatch. Elvis was okay but forgettable. So forgettable that I’m having a hard time thinking of another descriptor. I did not like EEAAO. I find the topic of multiverses interesting, and I think the movie addresses some important themes, but it felt like someone mixed Avengers (which I don’t particularly like) with Inception (which I loved). It took me several attempted viewings to power through it, which I would’ve probably quit after the first attempt if not for the hype it was getting. I tried pretty hard and it’s just not for me. That’s okay. I did not watch Tár, Women Talking, or Avatar.
  21. Agreed. The surgery and the hopes of developing a vaccine or a cure seemed like a huge long shot. I don’t blame Joel one bit. The hospital shootout reminded me a lot of Man on Fire. Great scene.
  22. I might leave some random bricks and empty bottles on the ground. Maybe a first aid kit.
  23. I get why we’ve been speculating about Rodney Terry for the past 2+ months. It’s a message board and we like to argue about hypotheticals. It’s kind of hard to take a stance on his fate without knowing how he will perform in the tourney. That’s the most important part of the entire year so we are arguing without the most important piece of information. I think rooting for Texas means rooting for Rodney Terry. He is the man leading this team and he’s doing a damn fine job. I hope to see it continue, and I hope that Texas makes some noise over the next 3 weeks, in which case I think he will have earned it. Go cut down a net Rodney.
