  1. I’ve been playing the game for the first time and just caught up to the point of Joel’s injury. Wife convinced me to stop to avoid spoilers but it’s very tempting to keep going. At first I assumed he would live through it, but I’m considering the possibility that he could die and the game/show could shift to everything being from Ellie’s perspective. I hope not because the dynamic between them makes the story great. I’m not entirely sure we’ll get the answer to this question tonight.
  2. I got summoned for the first time back in the fall. I filled out the online form and deferred it. The next summons came a couple months ago and I couldn’t defer online, so I emailed them and they gave me a one month deferral. My next date is March 20 which I plan to go to. I’m not sure if I could’ve deferred again but I didn’t want to eventually get stuck with a very bad date down the road. I’m a physician and these have all been relatively short notice, requiring me to reschedule 30+ appointments that were already booked. Very frustrating for me and not all patients are super understanding of that because they had already made their own arrangements to be at their appointment. I definitely do not want to be picked. I don’t care about my civic duty because my primary duty is to my patients and if I’m selected for the jury and have to miss multiple days or even weeks, that’s highly problematic for everyone. I realize other people also have important jobs and jury duty is rarely convenient, but this is potentially a huge pain in the ass and it’s understandable why people really wouldn’t want to do it.
  3. You may be right. I did some random searches on routes I would routinely book each year and the amount of miles required is pretty high. Significantly higher than AA which I'm more familiar with their mileage redemption. I'm concerned that even when I do want to fly Delta, which is once every 1-2 years, the flights I would want will require too many miles and I'll end up just paying cash then anyways. Can't decide if it's worth a $250 AF just for the sake of stockpiling 90k miles that I may use one day.
  4. I can’t imagine starting and not finishing Top Gun. You had to know what you were signing up for and it delivered exactly that. It’s not like you thought it was one kind of movie and then got a different kind of movie. If you don’t like that, why even start it?
  5. I’ve recently done CSR, CSP, and Amex Gold. I’m not eligible for Capital One currently. I fly mostly AA and rotate their Citi and Barclay cards to get signup bonuses and other small perks. If there was another good offer in front of me then maybe I would take it, but I do occasionally fly Delta so it seems reasonable to pay a $250 AF to bank 90k miles that won’t expire. I would cancel the card after the bonus. Someone point me in the right direction if there’s a better option out there.
  6. Well in the game Joel would definitely be flashing red right now but he’s still alive and has time to press the big center button and craft a health kit (assuming they have 1 rag and 1 water), then he would need to press Up and R2 and he would be good again. But yeah, I’m curious how they resolve this.
  7. This season has been a masterpiece thus far.
  8. I got a Delta 90k miles offer in the mail. It’s for the Platinum Amex with a $250 annual fee after $4k spend. I don’t fly Delta too often, but it almost seems worth it since the miles never expire.
  9. I think that’s the beauty of the story, we care about the characters, even the ones that are only there briefly. Great writing to be able to trigger that emotional response. Compare that to TWD where they created stupid characters and then threatened imminent death to Rick and Coral so many times that we all just wanted them to die and end our misery as viewers.
  10. After talking with Vanguard, I think I figured it out, which made me realize I didn't understand the backdoor Roth IRA process as much as I originally thought. I can contribute up to $6,000/year into the traditional IRA, which I did. (fwiw, it will be $6,500 starting this year) That is not tax deductible due to my income. After that, it doesn't matter if it accrues interest before converting to Roth. It also doesn't matter which year I convert it to Roth, but whichever calendar year that occurs in, will be reflected on the 1099-R for that year, regardless of the year that the original contribution was made to my traditional IRA. So for last year, I contributed $6,000 to my traditional IRA, and I took a $5,005 distribution as a backdoor Roth conversion. At least that's how I now understand it.
  11. Nice thread and pics. Would like to go there myself at some point. Did I miss a conflict from another board that spilled over into this thread, or did multiple posters just decide to be assholes to the OP because of spelling?
  12. I'm having problems figuring out my backdoor Roth IRA conversions and reporting. I probably messed the process up and now it's made tax reporting more complicated. TurboTax support isn't giving me a straight answer. I contributed $6,000 to my traditional IRA account, spread out in $1,000-2,000 increments throughout the year. It goes into the Vanguard Federal Money Market fund, where it typically gets converted within a week over to my Roth IRA account, then redistributed into my chosen funds. Problem #1 - With my final contribution and conversion, I got distracted and busy towards the end of the year. The contribution to the traditional IRA occurred in 2022 but the conversion to Roth for that final amount didn't get done until 1/12/23, so it isn't showing up on my 1099-R. When I made the conversion, I realized this "mistake" but I thought it would be fine since IRA contributions are allowed up until April 15 for the previous year. Maybe that doesn't hold true for backdoor Roth conversions? Problem #2 - At some point, I probably neglected to do a conversion in a timely manner and it accrued interest while still in the traditional IRA account. I'm not sure which time that was, but my 1099-R form shows a gross distribution of $5,005 (so clearly I picked up $5 somewhere) and that final conversion that didn't appear on the 1099-R shows $1,009 so there's an extra $9 accrued. This means that even though I contributed an even $6,000 to the traditional IRA in 2022, the total conversions is $6,015 which seems like a party foul. Is there a simple way to straighten this out? Do I need to contact Vanguard for help? Is this a big enough deal that I should take it to a CPA and let them do all of my taxes for me?
  13. I celebrate OU losing but I don’t celebrate shitty calls that result in OU losing. That compromises the integrity of the game and then what’s the point in even watching? What if Texas loses on a similar shitty call? What if Texas wins on a similar shitty call and then we always have that moment questioned instead of just kicking the FG with 1:48 remaining and giving our defense a chance to hold? Celebrating this call is chickenshit behavior.
  14. There’s nothing more pathetic than Cowboys fans celebrating a bad call to end an otherwise great Super Bowl because the bad call hurts a rival team. Basically a franchise that has a shitty owner that prevents ever even reaching a Super Bowl, so they are stuck celebrating bad outcomes for everyone else. Congrats?
  15. That was great. I think they missed an opportunity to close with 5 seconds of lawyer speak about potential side effects.
  16. Imagine traveling light years to establish friendly contact with an alien species and then they shoot you out of the sky without even realizing what you are and what you had to accomplish to get there. We must look insane to them. Don’t visit Earth. Its inhabitants are crazy and hostile.
  17. Outstanding episode that I thought was culminating in the zombie shootout, then they tacked on that gut-wrenching final 10 minutes. This show is fantastic so far.
  18. Theaters have changed a lot in the past 9 years. The theater I mostly go to is an AMC theater and it’s great. Reserved seats, big recliners with plenty of elbow and leg room, great alcohol selection.
  19. Would China be invading Taiwan for the sake of reclaiming a former territory that they believe is rightfully theirs (like Russia and Ukraine) or for the sake of controlling the world’s semiconductor manufacturing? If it’s the latter, it seems there will be a major problem with China successfully operating and maintaining the fabs once they take control. Is it expected that China would have the expertise to do this on their own, or that enough of the Taiwanese workforce would survive the conflict and be forced to continue working under Chinese occupation?
  20. $4,900 for 3 pairs of exterior French style doors
  21. When you have 3 kids, ordinary experiences tend to cost more. Now do a Texas football game, skiing, or Disney World. Suddenly $100 for 2-3 hours of entertainment seems like a steal.
  22. Except that small little detail about casting an actor and considering their actual ability to act.
  23. This has become an even bigger mess. I ended up contacting Resdoor in Fort Worth, which seems to a be a reputable local door supplier. They only sell doors, no installation, so they referred me to a local contractor. I called the contractor who came out and took measurements, then gave me a quote for $10k that I thought was fair. I agreed to pay him $5k up front, he ordered the doors, and then I would pay the remaining $5k once the work was finished. The doors got delivered to my house and he came out to do the install, then he said he couldn't because the doors were the wrong size. He said he gave Resdoor the correct measurements and he suggested the mistake was on their end. I felt like that should be a simple fix and that he could straighten it out with Resdoor and get the doors reordered correctly. I got busy for a couple weeks, then the holidays, then I hadn't heard anything from him so I checked back in. He kept saying he needed to come to my house to do something, which I assumed was to repeat the measurements. It took a couple more weeks to arrange a meeting date. When he showed up he wanted to see the doors and take pictures of them, which he said was because he now needs to sell the doors on Facebook marketplace. What the fuck. He said Resdoor won't accept a return or replace the doors which obviously indicates the mistake was on his end and not theirs, even though he won't admit that to me directly. He also says "his company" doesn't have the money to reorder doors until these doors are sold. I have no faith in him selling custom sized doors on Facebook. I have no experience on Facebook, but using my wife's account and searching the marketplace, I can't even find the doors listed on there and it's been ~2 weeks. I called Resdoor to get their version of the situation but the salesperson who sold him the doors is now on leave until March. Just my luck. They are looking into the situation for me, but it doesn't sound promising. I've tried to play nice with the contractor to give this a chance to be resolved amicably (ideally that would mean the work eventually gets done correctly for the original agreed upon price). We're at the point where I need him to either pay for new doors out of his own personal finances or refund my money. I think the likelihood of either happening is less than 50%, which I guess that leaves me with the option of trying to sue him to get a refund, which sounds like a huge pain in the ass and hardly worth the time.
