  1. Agreed, especially during COVID. I think any place that has sit down service with actual waitstaff is going to struggle with a group of 27 kids and 3 coaches. You could call around a few places and check. Maybe a place like Whole Foods or Central Market would be good because you can order from a counter and then sit wherever. Or perhaps one of the BBQ joints (Panther City, Dayneā€™s, etc) or the original Kindcaidā€™s for burgers.
  2. Thankfully my wife never likes to make a fuss about Valentineā€™s Day, but I also donā€™t want to inadvertently be the guy that ignores her needs, so I usually double check with her in advance. Me last night: Valentineā€™s is coming up. Do you want to plan something or do gifts? Wife: No thatā€™s stupid. We go on nice dates all the time already. Me: Ok just checking. Wife: I let you know when I want stuff. Me: Cool.
  3. How many people and what age range are the kids? Agree that Press Cafe is good, but not if you plan to show up with a full youth soccer team with 12 players plus coaches and parents. They arenā€™t really built to handle large groups.
  4. Watched it last week and didnā€™t really care for it. Too long and the payoff was a fairly predictable twist.
  5. Just finished this. I liked the show for its overall tone, acting, direction. The last 3 episodes were crazy intense. Wish they wouldā€™ve found a way to get Bunny and Rebecca on screen in the finale because they both disappeared towards the end. Nichole Galicia is a great looking woman. I swear I saw her coming out of Shinsei in Dallas last week but I have no way to verify that. The premise of the show is the only thing holding me back and puts it in ā€œliked it but didnā€™t love itā€ territory. Mike works all sides to maintain peaceful relations between cops, prison guards, and inmates. Everyone is totally cool with that and they often act as if they canā€™t function without him. Not sure heā€™s even very good at that role because shit steadily escalates throughout the show, and in the finale where heā€™s sent in to be the negotiator, it results in most people dying and him ducking for cover. Also, I donā€™t see how he brings in any money or pays Rebecca or the office rent, because hardly anyone shows up in his waiting room asking for favors they will actually pay for. But if you overlook the ridiculous premise and just accept it as a show about tense relations between law enforcement and criminals, itā€™s fairly entertaining.
  6. Elsaā€™s narration feels like a direct copy of Dolores from Westworld. Similar accent and everything.
  7. Not sure how I feel about the tornado part. On the one hand, I enjoyed the thunderstorm moving in and even the extreme scenario of a tornado. Those are real threats that pioneers wouldā€™ve faced in a place where they were horribly exposed, giving me an ā€œoh shit, this isnā€™t goodā€ feeling as a viewer. On the other hand, the tornado was powerful enough to wreck their wagons, but no people were injured. And not only did the sky immediately turn sunny and clear afterwards, but there was not a drop of rain to be seen. The people were perfectly dry and the grass was dry. It was like nothing ever happened, except the wagon damage.
  8. By your logic, maybe we should ask ourselves why 70% of NFL players are black. That isnā€™t really fair if black people are only 12% of the U.S. population. By that logic, one might conclude there have been unfair hiring practices at the level of the NFL draft. Perhaps the next NFL draft should be mandated to be 59% white, 19% Hispanic and Latino, 12% black, 6% Asian, and then make up the remainder with Native Americans and Pacific Islanders. To keep it fair and all. Disclaimer: I donā€™t really believe what I just posted, but Iā€™m simply pointing out that mandating hiring practices to match a specific racial demographic that is already significantly different from the general population seems absurd.
  9. I wonder how much Charlie paid for his horse. Hopefully he will tell us next episode.
  10. I use a Chemex daily and a Capresso burr grinder. The coffee quality is superb. I donā€™t think itā€™s much work because Iā€™m already hovering around the kitchen making myself breakfast, so itā€™s easy to pour water between whatever else Iā€™m doing. For people who donā€™t make breakfast, I could see it being a hassle. Iā€™ve considered getting an automatic coffee maker but it would need to basically do everything (grind beans and brew coffee) without compromising flavor. There arenā€™t many options for that. Jura coffee machines interest me. I like that it can grind the beans, brew the coffee, set the intensity level, control the water temperature, and brew espresso on days when I want espresso. They are in the neighborhood of $3,000 which is why I havenā€™t pulled the trigger yet.
  11. That map isnā€™t accurate from what weā€™ve seen in the show. At the beginning of episode 3 (River), they are looking at a river discussing what to do. I donā€™t think we were told specifically which river it was, but there were some clues it was the Red. Shea wanted to go east to the Denison ferry which is on the Red. He argued that if they went west, they would have to cross the Brazos. The way it was said strongly suggested they werenā€™t looking at the Brazos as the conversation was happening. So the Reddit map you posted doesnā€™t show them going to the Red in that episode. Secondly, at the beginning of episode 5, Elsa says in her narration they ā€œcrossed the main stem of the Brazos, just north of the Clear Fork.ā€ The Clear Fork is that southernmost fork of the Brazos, which I highlighted in yellow below. Just north of that would be about where I added the red arrow to the Reddit map, which again, puts them going the wrong direction. The black dashed line that was originally marked on the map is not crossing the main stem of the Brazos, which is clearly contradictory to specific details provided by the show.
  12. Great job Akbar. Constantly criticize your wife for being too slow, but she completed her roadblocks in a reasonable time and you were sloooow on your own roadblock to the point of getting eliminated. Dusty was intense this episode. I donā€™t have anything against them but Iā€™d kinda like to see them make a fatal mistake and get eliminated because his meltdown will be epic. Raquel brought the heat in this leg. Iā€™m surprised by how much I like Lulu/Lala and Penn/Kim. Both teams are enjoyable to watch, mostly positive attitudes, good racers.
  13. I rewatched season 1 since it had been so long. There was a lot I didnā€™t remember, especially the part about Maddie having the DVD of Cal and Jules. I thought that would become a huge plot point, but now that Cal has outed himself, the only remaining concern is that Jules is a minor.
  14. What an epic meltdown from Cal. That scene was incredibly awkward. ā€œDad, can you please put away your dick?ā€ Rue is hard to watch right now. Pulling for her but she is pretty far gone. Kinda fucked up for Elliot and Jewels to suggest a beer run, dangle her addiction in front of her, and then get angry when she joins them in drinking.
  15. Here is a quick markup of their route so far: Crossing the Brazos the first time was stupid and pointless. They absolutely must have crossed it a second time to end up back on the north side of it, which the show never mentions. Then while they are at Doanā€™s trying to hire a cook, I believe Thomas mentioned a possible resupply in Abilene. I added Abilene to the map to show how absolutely ridiculous that would be in their current location. I donā€™t personally buy the Abilene, KS explanation (which I think was floated by other confused fans and not the show itself) because it is directly north of Fort Worth and it wouldā€™ve been completely reasonable to travel via the Denison ferry if that was their plan all along. I also donā€™t buy the explanation that everyone was directionally challenged due to poor information at the time. There were established travel routes, ferries, and maps. If they were so stupid that they left the Red River and headed back south to cross the Brazos and end up on the wrong side of it, then they really have no business going across the country in the first place. This all might be a little more forgivable if the writer of the show wasnā€™t from this part of the state. He has no excuse mixing these things up this poorly and there is no reason from a plot standpoint that it needed to be this jumbled. There are plenty of ways to write the show thus far and have it make geographical sense. These types of absurdities are what separate great TV and movies from decent TV and movies.
  16. Saw it last night and agree with all of this.
  17. They didn't even mention a Speed Bump for them next leg. That will be lame if they get off with their only penalty being to start in last place.
  18. I was getting burned out on the constant absurdity of this show back in season 3. Based on the comments here, it only gets worse and I should probably pass on season 4.
  19. I just finished Lincoln Highway and liked it but not as much as Gentleman in Moscow. Canā€™t decide if I like the ending or not. Would love to discuss it more but obviously donā€™t want any spoilers here. +rep to NorthLooo for informing me that Peter Heller has a new book out. Iā€™ve loved all of his books so far. The Guide will go in my short list. And yes, Erik Larson is fantastic.
  20. Akbar is also kind of a dick. Sheri did the last 2 roadblocks because he is physically incapable, then hours later he is back to criticizing her over being slow. Arun and Natalia are embarrassingly bad at this. They should have been eliminated.
  21. I probably need to rewatch episode 1 because none of their motivations make sense. The Germans come to America for a better life. They arrive in Galveston, move up to Fort Worth, then embark on a dangerous cross country journey to Oregon to do what when they get there? They donā€™t know how to shoot a gun or even how to swim. Do they know how to farm? They steal from each other and donā€™t trust each other. Half of them are already dead. Even if their lives in Germany were shit, they were surely better off remaining in Texas and joining another German community compared to their current plan. Captain and Thomas are helping them but is it really worth it? Captain said he just wants to see Oregon again before itā€™s settled and ruined. I donā€™t think he needed to escort a bunch of incompetent Germans there to achieve that goal unless he is desperate for money. They are lowering his own chances of arriving alive. And since they are doing this together, perhaps Captain should train them along the way so they have some useful survival skills. Maybe teach them to use a gun or something instead of spend all your time yelling at them like misbehaving children.
  22. Finally got around to watching this show. Despite having soured on Yellowstone which I think is a poorly written soap opera disguised as a good drama, I was cautiously optimistic about 1883. So far, I like it more than expected. I think Tim McGraw is doing a surprisingly good job in his role and Isabel May is easy on the eyes. The scenery is good and I like the descriptions of Texas. There are definitely some frustrations I have though: 1. Completely agree with the posters who pointed out they went north to the Red River, then to avoid going east to Denison, their only other option was to go southwest and cross the Brazos?!? Abilene is way the hell out of the way at that point and that would put them on the south side of the Brazos, meaning they need to cross it again or go way west to cut around it. Why on earth was this part of the script? They couldā€™ve just headed west along the south bank of the Red River and avoided crossing both rivers. Or, if the goal was to show the difficulty of river crossings, there are countless other ways to force them to cross a river in a way that makes geographical sense. Given that Taylor Sheridan lives in Weatherford and has part ownership in the 6666 Ranch, these types of pointless mistakes are almost unforgivable. Itā€™s a show about a wagon journey to Oregon (or likely Montana) so the geography and the route they are traveling are pretty damn important. 2. We are 5 episodes in (~3 weeks in show time) and theyā€™ve basically gone ~150 miles and had half of their people die. At what point do they say fuck it and go back to Fort Worth? Or will they suddenly do warp speed in the last half of the season? 3. The Germans donā€™t speak English in episode one, but then they mostly speak English in the next handful of episodes. Well sometimes they do and sometimes they donā€™t. But then you have a scene with Josef and his wife alone, where instead of speaking in their native German as you would naturally expect, she is speaking broken English to just him. Be consistent with it. Let them speak German and we can manage the subtitles. 4. When that first bandit interaction occurred on the banks of the Trinity River, why in the hell did the SIL widow start throwing rocks at the bandits? She basically gave them a reason to start shooting people including her daughter. Dumbass. 5. The Elsa narration seems like a direct rip-off of Dolores from Westworld. Surprised no one else has brought that up.
  23. We have 10 nights booked in Kauai in early June. First 2 nights are just my wife and myself. Nothing booked yet, still gotta figure that out. Next 8 nights are with friends. Spending the first half in an Airbnb up at Hanalei Bay. Last half will be at Koā€™a Kea Resort in Poipu. We are fairly interested in the Kalalau Trail hike. Would like more details from those who have done it. What all did you pack for the overnight? What is the camping area like? How long should we plan for each direction?
