Never got around go playing the games but I liked the pilot episode.
-
Think of it like Gran Torino, but more uplifting and minus the violence.
-
Saw it last night and thought it was very well done. There are some differences from the book in the details, and the movie naturally loses Frederik Backman’s quirky humorous writing style, but it’s true to the story and the cast did a great job. Mariana Treviño stole the show IMO. I loved every minute she was on screen.

Pataday Extra Strength is probably the best OTC allergy drop available. You can get a 2 pack on Amazon for $25, or I think Target has the 2 pack for $31. Zaditor is a good drop as well. It was considered the best OTC allergy drop prior to Pataday becoming OTC about 3 years ago. It's cheaper which is nice, but the effect doesn't last as long. You may have to use it 2-3 times daily. For some people that may be preferrable. YMMV. I do not recommend any Visine or Clear Eyes products. They contain redness reliever medications that may help with redness in the short term, but if you use them longer than 3-4 days, there is a risk of rebound redness when you try to stop the eye drop. They also become less effective with prolonged use, so then you need the drop more frequently and you get hooked on it.

What savings scheme do you use for a kid?
wild_turkey replied to 52-80's topic in Business and Markets
I have a newborn so this topic is now relevant to my interests. I would like to open a 529 account for her, which I've browsed different options and I'm leaning towards the Vanguard 529 Plan for Nevada. It's appealing because it has low fees and because I already have accounts with Vanguard, so there's a simplicity factor. A couple questions I have: 1. They have options for an Individual 529 Portfolio (where I can pick investmest like a Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund) or the Targeted Enrollment Portfolio (where I determine their year of enrollment and Vanguard adjusts the diversification for me over time). For my personal Roth IRA, my strategy is more in line with the first option. For a college fund that's needed in ~18 years, I'm more inclined to pick the TEP so I can set it and forget it and trust Vanguard to make good decisions. Is that reasonable here? 2. The effective annual contribution "limit" is $17,000 for 2023 to stay within the gift tax exclusion limit. Is there any reason I shouldn't front load it with that amount this year, then my future yearly contributions could be lower and still be on pace for the final goal? Assuming my other tax-advantaged retirement accounts are maxed out yearly and that $17,000 would otherwise end up in a brokerage account or savings. Thanks for any input. -

Chris Beard had me excited about Texas basketball for the first time since 2007. Unfortunately for everyone involved, he made poor decisions that show that he is unfit to represent The University of Texas. Best case scenario is that he’s been in a serious relationship with a crazy person for 3+ years, and that relationship has become physical on at least one occasion, and even if he didn’t start the fight on that particular occasion, he remained in the house and engaged her to the degree that the police who responded felt there was enough to justify arresting him. Even if he’s 95% innocent, he failed to leave the house and remove any doubt about aggression on his part, and if he were to remain as coach, we would constantly wonder when the other shoe would drop, and our opponents would constantly criticize us for employing a man who is aggressive towards women. Perception is reality with these things. Worst case scenario is that he actually does have anger problems and he actually did assault her or choke her. I was shocked and saddened when this story first broke, but I am proud of The University of Texas for responding appropriately and prioritizing being a decent human being over athletic performance. We will be better off without him. No amount of basketball wins are worth having this as the face of our program. For anyone saying “Poor Chris Beard…”, he is not the first person in history to have a promising career derailed by poor personal relationships. It’s very difficult to achieve professional success while having a toxic home life. Even if she is the aggressor, he has some major shit to figure out if he ever wants to coach again. For anyone thinking The University did the wrong thing, get your priorities straight.

That looks fantastic. -
Football board is very serious today.

Thank goodness, we get that all the time.

Enjoyed the book, eager to see the movie.

I married a 10 and we’ve hooked up on various St. Barth beaches, more times than I can count. It’s pretty high on my list of favorite activities and it can take me to place where I don’t give shit what Chris Beard is doing, or that college sports even exist for that matter. Okay…off to look at flights.

Stayed home this year due to having a newborn, so I was cooking for just my wife and myself, and the dog of course. We decided to have beef bourguignon. It’s delicious, although a bit time consuming to do everything right. Not an issue today because all we were doing was watching Christmas movies anyways. It came together nicely.

Thanks everyone. If I’m being honest, I kinda wanted a girl. I would’ve wanted a boy too, but we got a girl and I wanted a girl. I think girls are awesome, and my wife is a badass, so if she grows up to have some of my wife’s personality and looks, I’ll be super happy. I’m prepared for less sleep and less time. I’m sure it will suck at times, but I have too much energy for a guy my age and this might bring me down to normal. I needed some new hobbies as well. Wife is not breast feeding. She had some colostrum saved up from the week before and we gave that, but then switched to formula. There are various reasons for that, but even if she had wanted to breast feed, I’m not sure she would be able to. Her recovery has been painful and slow. She’ll get there. I enjoy formula feeding because it allows me to be on equal footing from a responsibility standpoint. I used to get annoyed when my wife would do something like leave her shoes in the middle of the kitchen floor. At some point it occurred to me that if anything ever happened to her, I would really miss coming home and seeing her shoes in the middle of the floor. It’s a blessing to have that in my life, and that mindset helps me avoid frustrations over little things. I’m trying to apply that perspective towards the less pleasant aspects of parenting. Waking up to do a feeding or change a diaper may kinda suck, and I could look forward to the day when that’s no longer necessary, but life goes fast and there will be a day when I miss having that responsibility, so I’ll try to cherish it now.

I suppose this gets me into the club? Baby girl, born 12/21/22 at 6:25 am, 7 lb 0 oz. We were in the hospital for 34 hours waiting. Wife was having steady contractions that entire time but luckily not too painful and she was her usual upbeat happy self. Had some issues towards the end that looked like we might be headed towards a C-section, things improved at the right time and proceeded with vaginal delivery, but man that part got rough. The doctor let me help deliver and catch her coming out, what an incredible experience. Wife had complications immediately after but they stabilized her and she is doing better. Still having a lot of pain 2 days later, but gradually improving and the acute concerns are behind us. Baby is doing awesome. She is completely healthy, all checkups have been great, going home today. The doctors, nurses, and hospital staff have been amazing. I’m a doctor and these people inspire me to be better at my own job. The L&D nurses in particular are saints. We got married young, now married 17 years, neither of us ever had the parenting itch until about 2 years ago when that switch flipped for both of us. What a whirlwind this has been but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Life is great today.

Lol I actually took 408D twice because I was a fucking moron who thought 408C was pretty easy and it would probably be ok to skip class in 408D to play StarCraft or NCAA football, then just show up for the tests. Not recommended.

I’m definitely on the side that thinks he should and will be fired, unless by some small chance there is video or audio that completely exonerates him. I personally doubt that will be the case, but time will tell. I think if that level of evidence existed in his favor, there would be some mention of that from his attorney by now, just to try to sway public opinion towards giving him the benefit of a doubt. My memory is a little fuzzy on the early days of the Trevor Bauer fiasco, but I thought there was some of that talk pretty early on. Despite all of that, I don’t think The University has to be in a rush to fire him. They quickly placed him on administrative leave without pay, which seems like an acceptable response even for people who don’t like UT. No one in the media is criticizing Texas as far as I’ve seen. If anything, it’s more sympathy towards Texas and criticism of Beard, so the two parties have been adequately separated. We aren’t hiring a new coach right now, so we have time. I don’t think the silence from The University is an indication of anything at this point.

Why has the tone in this thread seemingly shifted in Beard’s favor? It appears many of you are running with the idea that she is crazy, therefore, whatever Beard did was justified or necessary. Has new info been released that I missed, or is everyone passing their time by creating hypothetical scenarios that have a basketball happy ending? Some of you guys are speaking about it as if you believe it to be true, which based on the facts we currently have, comes across a little bit like Baylor fans defending Briles. Maybe this does eventually turn out some way in which Beard looks less guilty than he did in the beginning, but we have a long way to go and and it’s a bit unsettling to see people making excuses for him at this stage.

Outstanding season. Well done ladies!

The post I responded to and quoted said: That was the entire reason I posted. If not for that, then I would agree that most posters here have been pretty hard on Yellowstone lately. Except Macklemore who occasionally shows up to say how amazing it is. Also, streaming TV has been considered regular TV for about 10 years now. No one cares about the 54 garbage shows that come on ABC. They are so bad they aren’t worth having a thread and arguing about.

Albie probably thinks they gave each other their V-cards.

I would argue that it’s an outright bad show. Not mediocre, but bad. Just terrible writing in seasons 3-4. Bad enough that I quit watching after 4 seasons, which puts it in the same category as Dexter, Handmaid’s Tale, and The Walking Dead. No, it is not some of the best TV on right now. Good scenery cannot elevate it above its many flaws. Better current TV shows off the top of my head would include The White Lotus, The Boys, Ted Lasso, The Crown, Severance, Euphoria, For All Mankind, Sex Education, Industry, Perry Mason, Winning Time, House of the Dragon, and Succession. And if we want to include limited series, I would add Station Eleven, Tokyo Vice, and The Offer.

No, Mike Leach, YOU'RE awesome! [Pirates Last Voyage]
wild_turkey replied to Parliament's topic in Football
What a gut punch. I saw yesterday he was in the hospital, then found out this morning that he had died. Just a terrible unexpected tragedy and we lost one of the best personalities to ever be associated with college football. He will be deeply missed. RIP Coach Leach. -
this might be important. Is fusion important?

With our current technologies, it seems our clean energy sources in order of potential capacity are nuclear (fission), wind, solar, hydro. Unfortunately, the world can’t figure out what to do with nuclear because too many people have been scared into thinking it’s unsafe or bad for the environment. And the other sources are inadequate to completely replace fossil fuels. So we need to either change the minds of policy makers regarding nuclear and rapidly scale that up, or innovate new technologies that don’t currently exist. And yeah, keep developing solar and wind, but we can’t keep our heads in the sand and think those things will be enough. -
I finished with 3:54 so met my sub-4:00 goal. Overall happy with that result but a tiny bit frustrated that I was on pace for a better finish and I struggled heavily in the last 5-6 miles. Here is my pace breakdown: There was a big elevation gain mile 20-22 so that took its toll on me and then I was just gassed afterward. In my previous marathon in February, I had a knee problem around mile 20 and similarly struggled down the home stretch, but I guess because my knee was bothering me, that pain superseded any feeling of hitting the wall from a physical exhaustion standpoint. I felt like my training was reasonably good. Long runs were 13, 15, 17, 19, 11, 20, 13, and 11 miles in the 2 months leading up to the race. I wonder if I should work towards a 22-23 mile run at the peak of training? Most training plans seem to stop at about 20 miles. I wonder a little bit about my nutrition and hydration. I eat whole grain pasta the night before, then a banana and a bagel with peanut butter the morning of, then I eat GU gels and drink Propel/Gatorade during the race. I think I had 5 gels yesterday, about mile 5, 10, 14, 20, 23. The 2nd/3rd ones didn’t go down super smooth so I got nervous about having more, but perhaps I should’ve forced them anyways. Normally I tolerate them just fine. Open to any suggestions. I’ll probably give it another shot sometime next year and try to get 3:45.
