Thinking more about Yasmin’s story, she is the most interesting character to me because we get to see a pretty heavy internal struggle with her. The rest of the characters seem fairly straightforward and one dimensional in terms of their motivations and their chosen paths in life. On the one hand, there’s a version of Yas that looks like she could be happy with a guy like Rob, and leave all the financial mess and the tabloid drama behind. I sympathized with that version of Yas and rooted for her. Unfortunately, there’s also the other version of Yas that shares her father’s blood. She may not be the sex abuser that he was, but she struggles with relationships and she needs the money and grandeur and power. She needs the social status that comes with those things. I strongly disliked that version of Yas. This final episode highlighted this conflict and it felt like watching an alcoholic trying to resist a drink. Yas resisted Henry’s offer to stay another night and resisted his apology at the door to her room, but she broke down when his uncle appealed to her and offered her family and protection. Rob was the guy trying to make a name for himself, driving a rental car, and playing scratch off lottery tickets. Muck was the guy with an inherited fortune, and he may not be much himself, but he could immediately cover every other need that she has.
