  1. Goddamnit. It all came down to Martinez coming with 2 outs and coughing up 3.
  2. I'm feeling greedy. Stomp on their throats.
  3. M's fans are down bad. From the replies on their team account.
  4. Won a game against SEA started by Kirby, who has a sub 1.5 ERA vs. Astros, to secure a series win and first place. Life is good.
  5. It's not weeks straight of triple digits and zero chance of rain. It's an improvement.
  6. Was quite nice to take the dogs on a walk this morning and not get back home drenched in sweat. Current forecast through the end of July is basically the exact opposite of last Summer. At this point in July 2023, we were already a few weeks into the seemingly never-ending stretch of brutal heat and drought at this point last year and didn't finally catch a break until the middle of September.
  7. Ronel Blanco and Hunter Brown leading the Summer Surge. A guy named "Tayler" getting signed for league minimum after being waived for the 5th time and being arguably the best 6th inning guy in MLB. . Pressly loses the closer job and looks like a washed-up turd through Memorial Day. Comes back from the dead and becomes an untouchable 8th inning setup man. Offense finally hits its stride after our MVP-contender who was raking goes down for 2 months. Just like we all drew it up.
  8. 6 scoreless. Good job son.
  9. CR warning. Thank God our industry is privatized.
  10. Depressing story out of Beaumont, but at least a happy ending. Old man commits suicide by cop, leaves a note asking for his dog to be taken care of. Hundreds of people immediately offered to adopt and he already has a new home and new brother. https://www.12newsnow.com/article/news/local/man-fatally-shot-by-police-leaves-behind-note-asking-dog-be-taken-care-of/502-2952a1c3-35c1-4f14-9f7a-a59e8a9cbe88
  11. In my experience, that's just how dogs are. We've been feeding our 2 the exact same kibble for a decade. Previous attempts to try other diets or even other brands have ended in diarrhea. Hell, one of my dogs has his stomach gurgle non-stop and loses his appetite for the evening after going to the kennel b/c the treats they have aren't the same as the ones they get at home.
  12. Now that almost everyone has power back, I notice that Houston is still dealing with Beryl hangover. Traffic has been worse than ever the last few days and I'm not talking about highways. I think it's a combination of several lights still being out and shipping delays. Seen more 18-wheelers on city streets than ever before. I was heading back towards my house yesterday morning and the line of traffic waiting at the light at Yale and 610 was backed up all the way north the railroad tracks at 34th. Over 50% or more were freight vehicles. You would have had to sit through 6-7 light cycles to get through.
  13. Facebook has become totally overrun with foreign click-bait accounts that post AI-generated garbage. Stuff depicting American-ish soldiers, often with prosthetic limbs, seems to be de rigueur. Typically there will be one or more grotesque baby-like abominations in the image as well. There will be thousands of replies from a mix of bots and credulous boomers, all saying "God bless" and/or "Thank you for your service."
  14. Bingo. It's because they are used to communicating through implication/suggestion and bait questions (i. e. asking you about your day b/c they want you in turn to ask about their day so they can tell you about some drama) You can ask a yes or no question that literally has no "wrong" answer. Something like, "Hey babe, how are we looking on dog food? Do I need to pick up another bag on the way home?" It becomes a multiple choice question of "what did he REALLY mean by that?" "Is he being passive-aggressive to imply that I should have already picked some up?"
  15. This was a fun one earlier. Backstory: We had to completely empty our fridge and freezer following Beryl power outage. Wife just got back in town from a work trip earlier this afternoon. I was planning to hit up the grocery store on way home from work this evening to grab a few essentials. Quick call to my wife before I leave the office and stop at HEB. Me: "Hey, did you happen to go to the store when you got back today?" Her: "No, I thought you were going. I didn't know I was supposed to." Me: "You weren't supposed to, I'm just making sure you didn't so we don't end up double buying anything." Her: "I'm sorry." Me: "You don't need to apologize. You weren't supposed to go." Her: "I can go if you don't want to stop on the way home." Me: "Jesus Christ."
  16. Damn, that's brutal. Only 45K outages left per latest update. You're in the final 1.5%. What neighborhood?
  17. My pool is a lovely shade of green after not having the pumps running for 8 days. Pool guy has his work cut out for him tomorrow.
  18. Oh well, ain't my building.
  19. All of our first floor window offices had water come in through the floor to ceiling windows, but apparently not bad enough to rip out carpet. Building had those damn dehumidifier fans running 24 hours a day from Tuesday morning through Friday night. The noise made it impossible to get anything done. Fortunately we had some extra space on a different floor so i was able to temporarily relocate and moved back in to my normal office yesterday morning.
  20. Posting tonight from my home computer for the first time in 8.5 days. Power came back on sometime between when I left my office and pulled into my driveway around 6:30. All I was planning to do was pop in and pack a bag while sweating buckets and then head over to my brother's house for the night. Immediately hauled ass to go pick up my dogs from the kennel before the cutoff between daycare and overnight boarding. Never been so happy to see a front porch light on in my life. Just started a load of laundry with a shit-eating grin on my face. Still uncomfortably warm in the house, but it has already dropped from 85 to 80. We ended up being in the final 3% of addresses without power before getting restored. I stayed optimistic and held up pretty well for the most part, but yesterday when we started getting the "maybe not until Friday" texts, it finally broke me. Spent the evening alternating between pissed and depressed. It is my fervent hope that I was the last Surly poster still in the dark.
  21. Still in a nested outage, but heard some scuttlebutt among neighbors about a half hour ago that there is finally some activity on the street north of me, which appears to be the source of the problem. Not 100% getting my hopes up just yet, but best news I've heard in a while. Also lost power for several days and had pool pumps freeze and crack during Uri. After losing power for 6 days following the derecho, we decided "never again" and bit the bullet on a whole-home generator. Unfortunately, we didn't account for their being another massive outage less than 2 months later, before installation could be completed. Next freak storm though!!!!!!!!!!
  22. Apparently it's monsoon season in Houston the rest of July starting this weekend. Forecast 50-60% rain chances and highs below 90 every day from 7/19-29.
