  1. FB has been getting spammed with ridiculous engagement-farming AI accounts like this lately: 1/2 mile long 196-wheeler travelling the wrong way down the highway in a country where the road signs are in a gibberish alien script. The comments section are always a mix of obvious bots and credulous boomers posting "god bless. Amen!" Here's another This society ain't gonna make it.
  2. I've spent the last 16 years reading and posting on surlyhorns and its predecessor.
  3. S&P 5433 Nasdaq 17667 New ATH for both, yet again, while DJIA has been stuck in neutral the last 2 weeks. VIX is back down below 12.
  4. PPI came in extra soft, which is sure to piss off the people that hate inflation but also hate seeing it go down.
  5. Very soft May CPI reading.
  6. $3.05 this morning. 93% gain over the past 10 weeks.
  7. Yeah. I probably did a solid 2 hours of weed eating yesterday. Have never been so drenched in sweat. Very much needed though. Grass and weeds around the camp house were about waist high. All that rain last month has the place greener and more overgrown than I've ever seen it.
  8. Making a quick trip up to my lease on Sunday. Gonna go check on the camp house after all the recent storms, do a little weed eating and mowing, and scout locations for the new stand we're bringing out later this month. Also gonna start putting together a project list for a group work weekend come come September.
  9. Betting on BLS numbers based on ADP is as unreliable as assuming each Wednesday's EIA oil inventories will match the API estimates that come out on Tuesdays. They're looking at 2 totally different data sets with different methodologies.
  10. From what I read, it's basically the old plan with slight modifications to lane and sidewalk widths. The portion from 15th to I-10 will proceed. They're also removing this divider strip at 11th and Shepherd east to Dorothy. All the changes East of Dorothy will remain.
  11. In my 'hood back in the mid-90's, Diamondback Viper was the baseline-level acceptable BMX bike. Anything less would get you ridiculed. Show up on a mountain bike or something and you might as well give yourself a wedgie. Kids with parents with a little more money had Mongooses. Rich kids would have something like a Robinson or Dyno.
  12. An early-Summer scorcher out there today. High of 96 this afternoon, which is 5 degrees above the average high for June 6th.
  13. New ATH for S&P and Nasdaq.
  14. Where did this storm come from? I don't recall seeing any rain in the forecast this week, much less a 400-mile wide blob stretching from Austin to Lafayette and up to Nacogdoches.
  15. Got my luck charm on display in my office again.
  16. Looks like the area near my lease has received a little over 22" of rain this month, not counting today. The 1.5-acre "watering hole" on the property has been bone dry for at least the last 3 years. I went out there back in mid-April and it actually had probably 2' of standing water from some earlier Spring rains. It's probably neck deep at this point. One of the older members said there used to be pretty solid dove hunting out there back before the hole dried up. September work weekend trip might have just got a little more interesting.
  17. Core PCE YOY continuing to slowly tip-toe its way down.
  18. $17B deal. The list of mid-major E&P's in existence grows even shorter.
  19. Ended up losing power at my house from about 2:30 to 7:30. Wife was freaking out b/c she was reading anywhere from 24-48 hours from people posting on the Ring app. Sounds like there are a couple pockets of GOOF that are still without power this morning. Got some trees down in an easement and had to wait until sunlight to get a vegetation crew out this morning. This is just way too fucking soon after the last round. A good chunk of our neighborhood lost power for 4 or 5 days after the derecho. Less than a week after getting resotred it happened again.
  20. 315K currently without power in the Houston area. We made it a whopping 5 days between power outages. Today's affair should be fixed up much quicker, but man, Summer 2024 is already starting to wear out its welcome, and it's still several weeks away from starting.
  21. Got some legit street flooding here near my office by Washington HEB. Co-worker says that the Yale underpass is currently impassable with a couple feet of water.
  22. No rain inside the loop yet, but it's nearly completely pitch black outside my office window. I've never seen it this dark at 1:30 in the afternoon in my life.
  23. Ahh, it's going to be one of THOSE Summers. Extended searing heat and humidity punctuated by quick-moving, violent storms and the occasional tornado. Roofers, Fence Guys, Electricians:
  24. Damn. Glad I'm gonna be down at the beach for Memorial Day weekend. High of 85 each day through Sunday and there's always a nice steady sea breeze. Gonna be 95+ in town Friday-Monday before we get back down to more normal temps and get some rain chances next week.
