  1. That's a damn good buck for East Texas. Belly looks taut and trim, so I can't imagine he's much more than about 3 years old. Ideally, he'd get another year or two to age and breed, but out where we hunt, he'd likely get shot on sight. No high fences, so if you don't shoot him, someone on a neighboring property certainly will.
  2. I'd almost certainly be shaking and would need to spend a minute or two taking deep breaths after sticking my rifle on the window of the stand.
  3. Current forecast for Opening Day is low 80's and 50% chance of rain. It'd be comical if it wasn't so predictable.
  4. A lot muggier out this morning than past 2 days. Humidity has returned in basically the only pocket of the country in which most Surly posters live. Check out this national dewpoint map. Will be high 80's and elevated humidity until some drier air moves in Saturday. Temps ~10 degrees above average and abnormally humid to start next week and then 50/50 rain chances Wednesday-Saturday, though it will be a total crapshoot of where rain falls and how much. Euro model has Houston area getting just 0.5" total, while Austin gets 1.5" and College Station gets 3".
  5. it's Groundhog Day the next 7 days. Each day basically the exact same as the one before. Sunny, high around 90, low around 65. No chance of rain. Long-term models are starting to show a pattern change starting middle of next week with first real rain chances in a long while for 10/30 and 10/31. Too far out to have any confidence at this point.
  6. Some gold in the comments: "What's coming is a tow truck and a court date." "Be sure to upload the video of you screaming like a child when they smash in your window and taze you!"
  7. So damn nice out there when I took the dogs for a long walk this morning. Spending today in an office feels like a sin.
  8. I actually did the opposite last year on one feeder. After hunting Saturday evening of Opening Day, I went and adjusted the clock for DST at the stand I was planning to hunt the next morning, except I went one hour in the wrong direction. Feeder went off at the exact moment as I was climbing out of the stand to go see why I hadn't heard it go off. D'oh.
  9. I think I'm gonna adjust when I head out this weekend. Currently at 7:00 and 5:30. Probably move morning feed back and evening feed forward by 20 minutes each. This time of year you start losing close to 100 seconds of sunlight every day. By opening weekend, it won't officially be sunrise until close to 7:40.
  10. Looks like Silkie. A blue-skinned breed of chicken popular in Chinese cuisine. Alive:
  11. FIFY. Currently 97 degrees and won't get below 80 until just before midnight. Gonna be a bone-chilling 62 when waking up tomorrow morning. Temps in the 50's don't make an appearance until Thursday morning. In all seriousness though, I'm thinking about dragging out my knock-off solo stove on Thursday evening and drinking a few beers out by the fire. Might be another month until it cools down enough to use it again.
  12. IAH weather station recorded a 99 yesterday, which obliterated the previous record of 92. Today will be a repeat. Existing record high for 10/15 likely getting lapped by 5+ degrees. Gonna stay abnormally warm all the way to midnight, but north wind should really start picking up around 2 or 3 in the morning and cooling things off. Will be a blustery day tomorrow as the front makes its way south. Thursday looks like the real gem of the week, with morning temps in the low 50's and a much calmer breeze.
  13. Cavalry should arrive sometime late tomorrow evening. Hourly forecast has the temp dropping ~35 degrees from 6 pm Tuesday (95) to 8 am Wednesday (60). Record smashing heat until then. As usual, this front will only stick around for about 48-60 hours before petering out. Quickly back to a stretch of ~85/70 days. Not awful, but still 7-8 degrees above the average high and low for mid-October.
  14. Texans are 5-1, Cowboys are getting their shit kicked in at home yet again and about to be 3-3. The NFL is fun again!
  15. Heading up to my lease on Friday for a final pre-season work weekend. Got a few remaining repair/upgrade projects left to knock out before the season starts and of course top off the feeders. And what do you know, it just so happened to line up with the weekend that my MIL and wife's Aunt are coming to visit. Darn the luck! Man, with the way the weather's been going lately, I'm starting to get worried that it's still going to be daytime highs in the mid-80's by the time opening weekend rolls around. Unseasonably warm weather seems to have altered the feeding schedules out at our place. Game cameras have been picking up animals coming out way later than usual in the past 10 days or so. Feeders go off around 7 in the morning and 5:30 in the evenings and the majority of the camera action has been well after dark since the calendar flipped to October. Saw what appears to be a solid 8 or 10 a few nights ago at 10 pm. Big pack of hogs at 2:30 am...etc. Just curious, what time do the rest of y'all feed?
  16. Copy and paste. Blastfurnace saw us enjoying the pleasant mornings this past week and worked itself up into a blind rage. Will set new record highs today, tomorrow, and Tuesday by several degrees before this thing finally runs out of gas for a few days. Highs on Wednesday and Thursday will be 15-20 degrees cooler than Tuesday. It's never going to rain again though.
  17. LOL. Can never ever actually mention the price of stocks or commodities in this subforum, lest you be accused of jinxing it.
  18. Anyone got recommendations for an ATV repair shop in the Houston area? My brother and one his buddies on our lease bought a used 4 seater last year, and while it has been fun having it out there, it definitely needs some TLC. I'm hesitant to drive it around as much as I would like as it always seems to be on the verge of overheating.
  19. Imagine you're a 53-year old man. An account named "Liam Nissan" mildly mocks you on Twitter. Your goddamn Mom shows up, convinced the actor Liam Neeson is being mean to you, and tells the whole world not to pick on you because you're developmentally challenged. I'd end it right then and there.
  20. Finally went and got new tubes in both tires on my bike Saturday. Definitely planning on getting in a couple of rides later this week with the weather starting to shift more towards tolerable. Will be my first time on the bike probably since mid-May.
  21. WTI $77 and Brent back to $81, both of which are 6-week highs. Nat Gas briefly flirted with $3 on Friday, but has pulled back since to $2.75. Just can't seem to break out, been pretty much stuck between $1.75 and $3.25 for going on 18 months now.
