  1. After this summer, the first even moderately cool day this Fall should be a state holiday. I'm gonna take the day off and sit outside and drink coffee in the morning, go for a long bike ride, lunch on a patio somewhere...etc.
  2. Just saw some scuttlebutt online that the folks who own Savoir bought the big warehouse behind D'Alba and are planning to open a beer garden on the site late next year. That property is over a full acre, so potential to be a pretty big bar.
  3. No, the number is where each state's first 6 months of the year rank in regards to the last 129 years. 129 means it's the hottest start to a year in Florida over that entire timespan. Virginia's 127 means it's the 3rd hottest start in the last 129 years. Texas' 124 would be the 6th hottest.
  4. WTI a quarter shy of $75 as we speak. Highest price since around Memorial Day. EIA report out today predicts an ongoing supply deficit for at least the next 5 quarters. Eventually, projections of future recessions come into conflict with the reality that the world is currently using more crude than is being produced. Something gotta give.
  5. GOP Whistleblowers having a bang-up week so far.
  6. Quick reminder that Season 5 starts this week. Double episode premiere on Thursday.
  7. After a week where we finally got some rain and temps "only" topped out in the mid-90's, the pool felt damn near perfect yesterday. The difference between 86 degree water and 90 is night and day. Unfortunately, looks like we'll be going right back to bath water temps the next few weeks.
  8. Houston area got at least some rain just about every day since Sunday evening, with some pretty substantial totals Wednesday thru this morning. Looks like we may still get one more round tomorrow afternoon. Sprinklers caught a multi-day break, which was much appreciated, as it doesn't appear we'll be getting any more for the 2 weeks to follow.
  9. Man, the current MVP leaders in both leagues are having some insane first halves. Ohtani possibly (once again) having the best all-around season in the history of professional baseball. On pace to hit ~58 HR and lead the league in SLG and OPS while also recording an ERA in the low 3's and leading the league in K/9. Acuna is currently on pace to log the first ever season of 40 HR/75 SB and could end up scoring 150+ runs (hasn't happened in over 20 years). He had more SB than K last month. The Braves in general are just a rolling ball of knives. 18-2 in their last 20 and at 58-28 have the best record and biggest division lead of any team in the majors. Currently tied for most HR ever hit by a team before the ASB (166) and have 3 games left to break it. Matt Olson is on pace for a 55 HR/135 RBI season and he's only their 4th highest WAR position player.
  10. Damnit. Was planning to get a hard workout in this evening after 4th of July gluttony yesterday. Bent over to tie my shoe on the way out the door this morning and tweaked a muscle in my lower back. This happens to me every once in awhile, seemingly at random. Not terribly painful, just gets really stiff and achy for 3-4 days. Gonna cost me a couple of days in the gym. I've learned my lesson about trying to lift when this happens. Last time I tried to rush it before it was fully resolved, I made it much worse and spent the next 24 hours in borderline agony, barely able to stand upright. Gotta be more disciplined about always making sure to do my full back stretching routine after I finish lifting.
  11. Dude's a closer again. Last 7 appearances: 0 hits, 0 BB, 9K.
  12. I mentioned Thursday as being preferable to Wednesday, which is equidistant from both the previous weekend and the upcoming. And, IMO, it's better than a Tuesday because if you're going for a 4-day weekend, it starts your break. You can start enjoying your free time on Wednesday evening, partake in holiday festivities on Thursday, and then have 3 more days off. When it's on a Tuesday, your long weekend ends when you go to bed that night and you're back in the office to start a 3 day week, probably hungover.
  13. Tuesday is the worst possible day to have a random mid-week day off, unless you're able to just make an extended weekend of it and take Monday and/or Wednesday off too. If not, you get treated to "Extra Monday" on Wednesday, usually with a hangover. I mean, that's fun if you're in your 20's . Go out Monday night after work and chase tail, stay out late partying, sleep in and then party all day. But it kinda sucks as an old. Wednesday also a less than ideal option if you don't/can't turn it into a 5-day weekend. Too far from both the weekend before and weekend after. Fortunately it's a leap year next year, so the 4th will skip Wednesday and fall on a Thursday.
  14. Tuve just injured himself in BP. Dude can't catch a break health-wise this season. Brutal.
  15. Glad to see King Tuck back to playing at an all-star level the last month or so. He was borderline awful in May, batting just .247 with an OPS under .700, and struck out (14) twice as many times as he walked (7). Since then, he's been raking. .313/.900 in June and back to an even K/BB ratio. The numbers get increasingly better if you look at the 15-day and 7-day trends.
  16. All those WS Championship banners? How many are there in Arlington again?
  17. I was joking that dudes in the Villages that really are cheating just caught a break. "Honey, I know you think you found some bad shit on my phone, but that's just that scam that's going around. Here, check out this news article."
  18. Would have easily been the worst L of the year. A blown huge lead over the team you're chasing for first place. Would have been only the 16th time in franchise history we lost a game where we scored 10 runs. Great way to start the mid-week holiday break. I was going to spend the evening so fucking pissed.
  19. Well, here's a scam I hadn't heard of before, apparently targeting folks in Memorial Villages. Posted by MVPD:
  20. Very pleasantly surprised to get a solid hour of rain in 77018 yesterday evening. Was coming home from dropping my wife off at IAH and it started dumping as soon as I exited Shepherd. Could hardly see the lane markers. Heavy downpour with street flooding for about 20 minutes and then another ~45 minutes of a moderate, soaking rain. Lawn certainly appreciated it, but my god is it swampy outside as a result this morning. Couple more days of typical July weather with some decent rain chances Wed-Fri, but looks like the heat dome will start reforming this weekend. Long range forecast from 7/9-19 is just day after day of 99 and sunny with miniscule rain chances.
  21. Took the dogs for a walk around 7:45 this morning. Actually not an awful morning by Houston standards. Was overcast and a slight breeze. Made it a good 10 minutes in before I did any sweating, which is about 9 minutes and 30 seconds longer than usual lately. High only supposed to reach 94 and may actually catch a passing shower coming up from the coast this afternoon.
