  1. Retail sales come in at a very strong 3% for January. Core ex-autos was 2.6%, way above 0.9% expected.
  2. Looks like another solid front is set to roll through Texas later this week. Should be pretty chilly Thursday-Saturday, but the forecast thereafter is rather Spring-like.
  3. Some more neighborhood restaurant news. Reel Seafood, a Viet Cajun seafood joint, is relocating from Missouri City to Timbergrove. Going in next door to Kings Bierhaus and Egghaus. Opens up next weekend. https://www.instagram.com/reelseafoodhtx/ A bunch of Stomping Grounds updates: Bollo Pizza is either in their soft opening phase or will be very soon. Pho Fix, a Vietnamese cafe, has posted a couple times over the last few weeks about their first brick and mortar location getting closer and closer. https://www.instagram.com/thephofix/ Himari, a sushi bar from the owners of Handies Duozo and Aiko, recently updated their IG page. "Coming Soon." https://www.instagram.com/himarihtx/ And finally, the new home of Sonoma Wine Bar is under major construction in the little annex building out at the front of the property. https://www.instagram.com/sonomagardenoaks/
  4. Kind of a bummer, especially considering the Nintendo tends to leave their exclusives full price for ages and rarely ever offers them on sale. Metroid Dread came out 16 months ago and is still full price on the official website. $49.99 on Amazon. Mario Odyssey came out 6 years ago and is currently $59.99 on Nintendo shop! It's $40 at third-party retailers.
  5. I guess they think higher prices will hurt EU and US economies. Also entirely possible, if not likely, that it's a smokescreen and they don't have enough buyers or can't produce their stated quotas and would be cutting regardless, and trying to frame this as a punitive measure.
  6. Russia announces it will cut 500K barrels of production a day as retaliation for price caps. Me:
  7. Hamlin showed up in person to receive an award yesterday and gave a speech. MF'ers STILL believe he died and has been replaced by a body double/clone on behalf of nefarious forces seeking to cover up that he was killed by vaccines. Seriously, read the comments to this tweet. Social media was a mistake.
  8. Rather drastic change in the weather as this front rolled into Houston. Dropped a good 20 degrees over the past 4 hours. Pretty damn dreary outside my office window at the moment. Tomorrow looks great. Sunny, cool, and calm. An ideal Thursday to plan an outdoor lunch or an afternoon happy hour (or both!). Friday should be sunny all day, but unlikely to warm up much above 50 as the winds will be whipping around 15-20 mph all day. Saturday cold and sunny again, but much calmer winds. After a chilly morning, should eventually get up to the high 50's. That's a pretty damn solid stretch of weather by February standards.
  9. FYI, I've been very pleased with the quality of the frozen tuna steaks that HEB sells. They're $8 for a package of 2. I wouldn't use them for sushi/poke or tartare, but they taste perfectly fine lightly seared if seasoned properly. Not fishy at all and they have a nice deep red color (not pink) when thawed. Usually serve them thinly sliced with an Asian sesame salad, but they're also good for grilled tuna sandwiches. A solid option if you don't wanna drop $26.99/lb for the fresh ahi at the seafood counter. https://www.heb.com/product-detail/frozen-ahi-tuna-steaks-2-ct-12-oz/1705130
  10. After this front rolls through, Thursday is putting in an early bid for nicest day of the year. High 30's in the morning, but quickly warming to about 70 after lunch with a very light breeze. Not a cloud in the sky. Chilly but sunny weekend to follow.
  11. Market price for US eggs has been tanking over the past 5 weeks, believe it or not. Curious how long until this actually translates to lower prices on store shelves. I'll start holding my breath.
  12. Atlanta Fed GDPNow tracker for Q1 with a huge jump from last week's reading. 0.7% -> 2.1%. https://www.atlantafed.org/cqer/research/gdpnow
  13. Season 26 starts Wednesday. Haven't seen details on how many episodes this season will have. This is either the last or next to last season that will be available on Comedy Central/HBO Max. All seasons, past and future, move to Paramount Plus starting in 2025.
  14. Some friends of mine went to Boil House on Saturday. $10/lb and kind of small. Cottonwood is doing $5/lb every weekend, but it was apparently a giant CF yesterday. People posting they were waiting 90 minutes for their orders. Vendor just completely overwhelmed. Live prices at the seafood markets have been pretty reasonable so far that I've seen ($3 or less during the week, pricier on weekends) but they've been selling out pretty quick on weekends. Pretty much have to reserve sacks well ahead of time. Live prices about to get jacked up again for Super Bowl Weekend. Seeing $4.50/lb for field run/$4.99 for select at places offering reservations for this weekend. Don't think any grocery stores are selling any crawfish yet. Haven't seen anything at HEB or Kroger to this point.
  15. Recent footage released over the weekend. Looks like they added all kinds of features missing from the original (ability to craft ammo and grenades, side quests for the weapons vendor....etc.)
  16. Where to even begin? 234 American and British trainers killed in Ukraine? Nearly 2500 NATO troops? Over 100K Ukrainian Officers? Over 6000 armored vehicles and 7000 artillery pieces lost?
  17. Stop me if you've heard this one before: Elon credulously responds to shadily-sourced Russian propaganda.
  18. I got tanked the last 2 nights but that's b/c I was out partying with clients in town for NAPE. Timing was completely coincidental. Otherwise would have laid off until this evening. Really intend to cut out booze on weeknights year round unless there's a reason better than "I feel like drinking" (Astros games, work functions, vacation...etc.)
  19. O&G cannot catch a break this week. WTI was up $2 by 9:30, hit a wall and then floored it in reverse, now down $2. The beatdown on nat gas continues unabated. 10 cents every single day lately. China is re-opening faster than expected, US issues blowout jobs report this morning. Energy traders: "This is terrible news for commodities."
  20. Almost just dropped what I was doing to haul ass down to a local dealership. Gorgeous 2020 F150 King Ranch 4WD listed online for just $44K with "less than 1,000 miles." Spidey sense telling me that something ain't right. Way too good to be true. This would be an absolute robbery on my part. Picture of the dash shows a little over 93,000 miles on the odometer. LOL. Somebody done fucked up. Should say "less than 100,000 miles." Edit: Looks like they just fixed the listing.
  21. Can we just make this the general "gaming news" thread? Just recently finished GOW Ragnarok and now pretty much all caught up on having anything new to play so will probably just be re-playing some classics for the near future. Just re-downloaded The Last of Us Remastered for another playthrough since wife and I have been watching the show. Lot of stuff coming out this spring that I'm looking forward to playing sometime later this year: Resident Evil 4 Remake (3/24) Burning Shores expansion for Forbidden West (4/19) Jedi Survivor (just pushed back 6 weeks to 4/28). Tears of the Kingdom (5/12) Hollow Knight: Silksong (who the fuck knows?)
  22. $2.50. Back to late 2020/early 2021 price levels. Averaged $3.27 for the month of January 2023, down from $5.53 in December 2022 and $7.88 in September 2022.
