  1. The rivers have been high since it rained mostly all of July and my normal spots are still blown out. So, in looking for flowing smallie water, I scoped out a place last Thursday and went to it after work yesterday with my sit on top kayak. About 200 yds downstream of launch, my drag chain got caught and I capsized (PFD was on). I righted the kayak, got it to some water where I could touch bottom, and caught my breath. Luckily I travel very light in the kayak and only lost a spinning rod and chain, but damn, that all happened very fast. Wear your pfd in moving water y'all! I ended up catching 4 smallmouth and a northern pike.
  2. Been a slow month for river smallies. It’s been raining everyday and the rivers in MA are all blown out. So, we took a long weekend up to Maine and got rained on until yesterday afternoon. We got a couple hours on the river. Masshole jr caught the biggest fallfish I have ever seen. It was 17”… will have to check Massholita’s camera for a better picture. Speaking of Massholita, she caught her PB smallie, 14.5”: I’m making a trip back up here early August sans kids to focus on fishing.
  3. Beautiful smallies! Were you fly fishing? What kind of fly/lure, structure, current, etc...?
  4. The quest for a 20” river smallmouth continues… This one was 19.5”, took a clouser by a lay down.
  5. Pluckers was my go to late night joint when I lived in the Arboretum area. They will properly cook a crispy wing, have quality sauces, and, this is important, mix their own ranch. BWW has shitty ranch. I know the bleu cheese purists may scoff, I like both, but quality ranch matters. 10 hot, 5 bakers gold (with my coupon from the football game), ranch, and a lone star.
  6. Goat Ropers need love too!
  7. Great day on the river! Pulled in 4 about that size. Also got 3 bonus rainbows on streamers, plus my first walleye on the fly. The last nice bass was a thrill, I watched it come off a log, track my fly, and take it. Obligatory bald eagle pic:
  8. Ricky skipped his History final in 1998. Granted, he was receiving the trophy that night, but still, wasn't there.
  9. Masshole Jr got his PB bass on the fly yesterday morning. I was trying out a new sinking line and he took a couple casts and pulled this one out.
  10. Ok. Speaking of Sportsman’s Finest, about 10 years ago, I bought Joe Robinson’s manual “Piscatorial Absurdities” from them. I lent it to a buddy, moved up here, lost track of the dude, and want another copy. They don’t have it anymore and Ted, who championed the book, no longer works there. So, long shot, does anyone here have a copy? If so, I’ll pay you to get a pdf made of it.
  11. I have some friends up here who spend a lot on surf setups, but I’m not shelling out for a Van Staal. I like Tica and Star surf rods in the ~$150 range and Penn Battle/Conflict reels. I load them up with 50# braid and use a flouro leader. These rigs will be for chucking big baits out there. If you’re fishing for specks in the first gut, this will be overkill.
  12. Allen's boots has decent store brand hechos.
  13. This is my experience, Tecovas just don't fit me that well. Check out Allen's house brand... similarly priced and constructed. Fit me much better.
  14. Mainly the look, but thinking about it, I like a lower rise in my jeans as well. I'm pretty much all Levis 513 or 527... I have a couple other random pairs tossed in, but those 2 are my go-to.
  15. I hate the back pockets on Wranglers... makes me feel like I'm wearing a costume.
  16. Largemouth, sunfish, crappie, and catfish all survive under the ice all winter, so they should be ok.
  17. +1 on Filson. Maybe not a tin coat, but check out the Tacoma work jacket.
