  1. Got the new Chocklett book. Working on my gamechangers. Small ones are about 3”, bigger one about 5. Can’t wait for bass season to get going again.
  2. Got to the "Content I follow" stream, but when I tap on "Past Hour" it doesn't give me additional time choices. Every time I use the "Pager bar", it lets me know I can use the "Pager bar". I hit got it, scroll to a different post, and i get the helpful call out again. The "Pager bar" system needs a "go to last", "go to last read", and "go to [open field]" options. on big threads, it's difficult to push it all the way to the end. Read the thread and saw these same issues. The pager bar needs some serious help, if you're trying to scroll quickly and accidently hit it, it takes you to a different page, it's frustrating. I was just casually scrolling through a thread, my thumb went a little low, and it took me straight to the middle of the thread. I think the idea is good, but poor execution. Would be nice to merge streams... "Content I posted in" + "Content I follow" The menu button on the top left shouldn't take you out of Surly. I tap it and it goes to the "My Communities" page. I get that other people may have multiple communities, but that button usually brings up a menu rather than taking an action. I can't see "Defund Tom Herman" anywhere. Nice to have those. Can't edit posts.
  3. I generally use a 4’-8’ flouro leader tied on with a crazy alberto knot. I use this setup for artificials on everything from ML spinning with 10# braid/6# flouro to surf setups with 50# braid/40# flouro. I use sea striker fast snaps when casting for stripers. For bait, I’ll use a swivel as the braid to flouro connection.
  4. Re: Waders Sierra Trading Post often has good deals. I found a pair of Simms that lasted me 6 years there for about $100.
  5. The little macks up here are great brined and smoked.
  6. Not trying to hate on Tecovas, but Allen's house brand and Cuero both are similar quality hechos that fit me better at lower prices.
  7. Tecovas definitely is hipster boots. I lurk on the cowboy boot subreddit, and it's 90% fan boys wondering if there are skinny jeans that look good with their limited edition Tecovas.
  8. Waiting to see the price point on them, but hard to imagine buying those over RW 1178 or 1155.
  9. If this isn’t set on the Llano Estacado, I’ll be very disappointed.
  10. My dad on the Colorado yesterday with Kevin Hutchison of Hill Country Fly Fishers. Not the biggest fish, but a memorable one to be sure. Rod: Split Bamboo that belonged to his father. Fly: Wooly Bugger tied by his granddaughter (age 7).
  11. Narcissistic personality disorder and pathological lying. Also, he def has the 'rona.
  12. If you're going to have 2 fly rods covering trout to saltwater, I suggest a 5 and 8 wt. I'm team Orvis Clearwater for everything. When you need to advance beyond those, you will know enough to make an informed decision on your own. Other intro level product lines that I've heard good things about: Echo Base, TFO Professional II (I hear the Signature II is good as well, but I only buy 4 piece rods), and Fenwick Aetos. The Echo has a combo at a really reasonable price. The Aetos is also rated as one of the best "bang for the buck" rods around. I also bought a Maxcatch Premier for ~$65 on amazon when my Orvis was in the shop and it did just fine casting and landing fish. @Pescado_Rojo will evangelize line quality and I echo that sentiment. A $90 line for the 8-wt will do more for you than a next level reel or rod. Re: Kayaks. I fish out of a Lifetime Tamarack Angler. There is a new Tamarack Angler Pro that is about $350 if you can find it. It does everything you need for a beginner. I've fished out of a Tarpon 120 and loved it. With the amount of brands and models, find a shop that will let you test out multiple models and find what you like. My view is kayaks should be light and very portable; if you need a trailer, get a boat. Additionally, I find fly fishing out of a canoe much better than out of a kayak. I love fishing out of my square stern; it's incredibly stable and I can stand and fish in it. I have a 4hp outboard so I can cover ground, get any place a kayak can, and launch without a ramp.
  13. Thank you. Definitely agree on the dirty fire; I think it's based on the fuel. I wiped down the inside and cleaned off the grates and stone. I'm running a totally fresh batch of lump right now and the same thing is happening. I'm using Wegman's lump. It's been good in the past, but not this time. Will see what Home Depot and Lowe's has in stock.
  14. So, I was making "dove" poppers last week (no dove, used chicken thigh pieces) and they had that really greasy smoke flavor. I cooked them at ~450. First batch without the smoking stone, second batch with it in place. Tasted the same either way. Previously, I would grill them at high temperature on a kettle type grill and they turned out fine. I kept the lid down, should I leave it open? How can I avoid this?
  15. Day2. Headed to a spot on the river that supposedly has a higher density of Northern Pike. I did not find this to be the case. Was on the river from 6:30-1:30 and landed 5 bass; 2 dinks and 3 quality fish. The first one, I had seen some wakes by some rocks i was drifting towards. As I drifted past, I put my popper right on the spot and had a violent strike, but never felt the fish. I put it right back and she took it more deliberately this time. I love when the strip set feels like you’re setting the hook into a log. What the morning lacked in action, it made up for with fish taking poppers. Also had 4 bald eagle sightings and heard an angry beaver. Representative fish: I napped as the front and rain pushed through and hit up the river in town from 5-7. Murdich minnow on the sinking line was the fly. Caught 11 mostly dinks. Day 3. Worked in the morning and got on the river at the day 1 spot around 2:30. The front had dropped the temp to around 68. The wind was very strong so I fished conventional. Motored upstream to some faster current and put out the drag chain. A few casts in a nice pike went fully airborne missing my spook. Two casts later, I stuck it on a whopper plopper. Didn’t measure, but it was thick and probably 28” or so. Fishing was ok after that, 10 smallies mix of dinks and 12-15” bass. The plopper, spook, and rabbit strip jig all about equally effective. Only trip that I did not see a bald eagle. The pike: I’ll definitely take more trips up here next summer. Probably book a guide for at least 1 day and try to find someone to run a shuttle for me. Back home tomorrow.
  16. Day 1 on the Androscoggin. Fished for about 3 hours before the lightning got close. Landed 25 smallies, most in the 12-14” range. Also caught a 16” and 2 18”. Caught most on Cheat Mode and Swingin D, both fished on a sinking line. Most important fish was this little one: The fly is one my 5 y/o designed. The Bomb Head Bunker. He said it should have flash, marabou, and a foam head. We spent some time at the bench and figured out how it should look. Probably would have caught more on the sinking line. Got some more afternoon rain forecast tomorrow. Gonna hit a section of the river known for pike tomorrow in the am.
  17. If you’re in the centex area, reach out to Dez Davis of Supernova fishing lights. Not sure if he’s still doing custom installs, but he’s done a lot of this over the years and can point you in the right direction.
  18. I'd listen to every god damn offer and take the best one. Carrington is amazing at his job, and if the university can't pay him, I sure as shit hope that a booster can supplement his pay without getting us into trouble.
  19. I'm hoping to catch a 4 pound smallmouth.
  20. Heading to the Androscoggin river in Maine on the 24th for 3 days of smallmouth and pike fishing. Super stoked. Haven't heard back from either guide, but I can DIY this one. Also, I'm looking at the Yeti Loadout GoBox... seems to have good reviews, but think there must be something similar for less than $250. Anyone have a recommendation boat box/bag? Want to hold 3-4 3600 size boxes, 3-4 fly boxes, 3-4 large tippet spools, phone, small toolkit, first aid kit, and 3-5 fly reels.
