  1. I'm hoping to catch a 4 pound smallmouth.
  2. Heading to the Androscoggin river in Maine on the 24th for 3 days of smallmouth and pike fishing. Super stoked. Haven't heard back from either guide, but I can DIY this one. Also, I'm looking at the Yeti Loadout GoBox... seems to have good reviews, but think there must be something similar for less than $250. Anyone have a recommendation boat box/bag? Want to hold 3-4 3600 size boxes, 3-4 fly boxes, 3-4 large tippet spools, phone, small toolkit, first aid kit, and 3-5 fly reels.
  3. Carp on the fly is awesome. I caught a couple at muleshoe bend on Travis and the San Gabriel River years ago. The ones on the San Gabe were on a 3-wt and were 25” long. Amazing battle and watching the take was so cool. There’s a Walker’s Cay Chronicle episode with Flip and Dave Whitlock catching them on Lake Michigan. WCC online episodes Posting on tapa, hope that link works.
  4. They use artificial corn. That cracks me up for some reason.
  5. Time to start sourcing your urine stained arctic fox fur to tie proper Hendricksons.
  6. Llano bug and Llanolope are good terrestrials designed for that river. I believe Living Waters stocks both.
  7. My parents called that "Tour de Fridge" i.e. just eat all the shit we already have.
  8. Big weekend for the Massholes. My son is turning 5 and wanted to have a special Striper trip for his birthday. So as I was calling looking for a last minute charter, a captain gave me a time/bait/tide combo. Saturday we got there and both kids landed 23” Stripers. The half day charter would have been a disaster as the kids were done after 30 minutes or so. Yesterday we went to run the river. Both kids are getting into fly tying and my son wanted to catch one on one of “his” flies. Marabou tail, purple rubber legs, and a peacock herl body. I was able to hook a little smallie and he reeled it in. He was ecstatic. We got some good swimming in as well and saw a bald eagle. I went back today solo. I’ve been working the Murdich minnow on a sinking line and it’s been effective; landed about 12 smallies on that fly. I nailed this one on a popper. Next weekend we are headed to a cabin on Winnepausakee.
  9. I'd book a trip with Kevin Hutchison (Hill Country Fly Fishers) or Alvin Dedeaux (All Water Guides) for bass. Tell them you're starting out and would like to try a few different rods. They'll give you a brief casting lesson and put you on fish. After tip, you'll be out ~$500 with a good idea of getting started.
  10. Father’s Day gift for my old man Clousers, Murdich Minnows, Flashdancers, Llano Bugs, Dahlberg Diver, Galloup Bangtail-ish, Schultz Swingin’ Ds, Double Barrel Poppers, and buggers. My daughter tied the Olive bugger, she’s working hard at the vise. Not pictured: Full Day trip with Hill Country Fly Fishers I had to bail on my summer trip to Texas, so I wanted to make sure my dad got on the water.
  11. To me, it’s just a song. To the student-athletes that are requesting it be removed, it’s a signal of racism. Don’t get me wrong, some of my favorite memories involve singing that song, but I’ll defer to the current students and athletes on whether to change it.
  12. That fish is pretty skinny for the size of its head. Is that typical or just the angle?
  13. You should normalize the y-axis on the first graph.
  14. Neighbors growing up had a trout shack on the landcut. Got to make 2-3 trips down there as a kid. Probably my favorite fishing and hunting experiences of my life. Some day I’ll find a way to make another run.
  15. Note to self: don't go to Orvis store anytime soon.
  16. I actually have an old Orvis Rocky Mountain Large Arbor that I'm using, also have an intermediate line coming. Those Hydros look nice though.
  17. Orvis Clearwater Someday I'll buy a rod from a different series.
  18. These are saltwater fish. I’m targeting them a little bit upstream from the mouth of a tidal river. I don’t do a lot of true surf fishing. I need to find some more reliable spots near me. I do have a few spots in some of the smaller bays and coves where I’ve had decent luck. I also have a new 10wt rod coming in to punch those flies a little further to cover more ground.
  19. First Striper on the fly! EP baitfish in white with a little pearl gold angel hair. Fished on full sink line on a 6wt.
  20. School is back in session. Schoolies were biting on the falling tide to 25”. Wind was blowing at 20mph, so I didn’t cast the fly rod. Will be back at sunrise; hopefully the wind will be down a bit.
  21. Yep, chain pickerel. I love fly fishing for northerns. Not too many around me, but next time I get back to Minnesota, I’m gonna swap a day of targeting smallies for northerns.
  22. Out on a local pond in the canoe, both kids were casting paddle tails on 1/8oz jig heads. Daughter landed this toothy bad boy all on her own. I was amazed that no one hooked themselves or each other. I’ve been tying EP Baitfish getting ready for Stripers. This one is about 4” long on a 1/0 SW hook. I’ve never fished an EP baitfish, I’ll have a floating and sinking line with me. Any tips?
