I use 20 lb braid. I think it's spiderwire? It's been years since I've changed any of my lines out, somewhere between 5 and 10 on the 4 reels I regularly fish, and they are all still going strong, although the line on each reel has lost it's original green color and is almost white. I tie on about a 4 ft long, 20# fluorocarbon leader and retie a new leader when any of them get down into the 18 inch range. I connect the braid to the fluorocarbon with a uni-to-uni knot.

The water is pretty low right now. It's easier walking down river at the slab than up, but you might have more luck if you are fishing worms under a bobber up river...up river has more discrete pools that will each hold fish due to the granite boulder fields and outcroppings.

Surly Megathread of destruction and doom. [BEWARE VERY DOOMY]

No, he's not joking. But you need to reread his post. -
The issue isn't subpar learning, but rather that a significant number of kids aren't participating at all. Like, they never logged in on the ipad the school provided. Or they logged in for a couple weeks and then just stopped. Or they logged in for meetings and an opportunity to interact with their classmates, but they never did any of the assigned lessons. This didn't happen with just the lower income kids either...and I know it wasn't just our school district that had this problem. I've heard the same thing from teachers and friends across the country, to varying degrees. I'm talking kinder and elementary; I assume participation is at least a little better for older kids. I personally don't care what our school district decides. I have faith they will try to make the best decision they can in this shitty situation. My kids will be fine because we are active parents that have been supplementing their curriculum since Pre-K and have the time/flexibility to supervise and help them when needed. But a significant number of my kids' classmates won't learn a damn thing because they don't have the parental support to help navigate the online learning process. And as usual, the kids that need the most help will be the most screwed. So what do we do about those kids? I don't have a good answer.

The flats near Wilson's will have fish on them (mainly reds) but there are usually a bunch of kayakers fishing it these days...and the bottom is pretty soft in a lot of places. I would take the jetty boat over to the North Jetty or just fish the surf if the conditions allow.

Was it curly at the end of the line where it "snapped?" If so, it was a bad knot. Your rod is plenty big for most carp...if your inlaws are serious about their carp fishing, they are probably using those European setups that are specifically set up for rough fish. Or maybe they are just using huge rods intended for the surf or pier because they don't know any better and/or have a little meathead in them? Regardless, you don't want any of that stuff for bay or bass fishing.

Do you know how the kid is doing?

I don't know what the answer is, but Willie Mack's take isn't unreasonable. This virus is a mother fucker, and it may be doing the same damage as it is today for years. Life has to continue on, in some form or fashion. My kids are "fine" learning from home, but about 25% of my kids' classmates never showed up for online learning, and another 10% of their classes stopped participating with 4 weeks left. What are we supposed to do about these kids? FYI, I live in San Antonio, same as you. Surely you've seen the same with respect to your kids' classmates participation in online learning?

Yes, that's the trick question. But, you don't HAVE to paddle to get away from the public a bit. Get the book referenced above by Damor for some spots to walk in. And when you are at those places, like below the Llano dam, don't be afraid to walk a long ways; just be familiar with Texas river public access laws. It's not uncommon for me to walk/fish over a mile when I'm walking in somewhere on the Llano. However, kayaks will open up a ton of water for you around CenTex, and it's great just paddling and experiencing our rivers in that way. You don't need to spend a lot of money to buy a couple kayaks that will get you where you want to go.

That's a small bluegill. Like anything else, keep doing it and you will get better at it. I'm sure you are using the popper's correctly, as it's an easy thing to do, but when in doubt, check out YouTube to see how other people are doing it: Also, I don't fish below the bridge anymore...pretty scenery, but I've never caught many fish in that area. As a general rule, the further you get from public access points, the better the fishing. I figure you know this, but just in case. One more piece of advice: the best time to fish is whenever you can, but you will be much more successful in the heat of the summer if you are fishing at first light or late in the evening. In April or May, it's not that big of a deal, but on the lower portion of the LLano, the water gets really hot and it's harder to get them to eat after, say, 9:30? Where on the Colorado are you going to fish? I'm partial to the upper portion of the river from the Montopolis bridge down to 130. Check on the water release situation before you go. It's a great place to fish and very different from the Llano. I've fished the river multiple times this year from Telegraph to just above the city park. For whatever it's worth, the fishing has been good, but it's definitely different than it was before the October 2018 floods. I haven't caught a single largemouth, or even seen one. Now, I don't spend much time fishing the flat water and deeper pools that they live in, but I would say they are still in recovery. I'm also not catching or seeing as many sunfish as before the floods, and the ones I'm catching are small. However, I'm catching about the same numbers of guadalupe bass as in the past, maybe a few less, but size seems the same to me. In fact, I've caught more big fish this year than usual, with multiple guads over 2 pounds. The river itself is very healthy. Lots of minnows, frogs, hellgrammites, etc. The vegetation is back as well, though not as choked up as it was in some places.

Way to go Troph! Next time you are out there, check out the Castell General Store. It's a great place for social distancing.
-
The Llano is great; love that popper. Use your smallest flies and fish all of the shallow side channels and things that look too shallow to fish, provided there is some current running through. You can catch a surprising number of guads in 6 inches of water.

I agree that it is something beyond protests contributing to the spike in new cases. I was going to make a point that it is not the re-opening of the economy itself that is likely the primary source, but consumer behavior. But, when you open up bars, etc., it's a given that consumer behavior is going to fall to the lowest common denominator. After 3 months, I still do not have a personal opinion on what the hell we should be doing, other than wearing masks inside of businesses, which is such a simple gesture for the potential benefit of others and maybe even yourself. I'm just doing my best to keep myself and my family safe.

I would call and/or email HR and explain that you simply can't repay the $2,500 signing bonus because you don't have the money anymore. I would further explain that your inability to repay the $2,500 was due to your furlough, and that you cannot just wait, hope and pray that the company will bring you back full time and without a reduction in pay. Tell them you spent the $2,500 making ends meet during the pandemic, and that you needed to accept the new full time job because you have bills to pay, etc., and that due to the uncertainty of the job you had with this company, you felt you had no choice in accepting a new job. Be tough, but respectful. There's no damn way they will sue you over a $2,500 signing bonus after they furloughed you and you didn't get paid for 3 months and chose to accept another job that actually is paying you a salary during a pandemic...don't even think about offering to prorate, let them suggest that, if they are so inclined. By the way, this is NOT legal advise.

The Redington combos come with Rio line. I've always fished Rio line, and it's worked fine for my purposes. Is that considered shitty line? It seems popular and isn't what I think of as cheap.

I love all types of fishing. Can't say I'm currently obsessed with one form of fishing over another, or one species, etc. I guess I've gone through phases where I prefer one thing over another, but in general, I like changing things up regularly. However, I'm cheap when it comes to buying gear. Or at least I don't usually buy the most expensive things. I fished with an old 6 weight Pfleuger fly rod and reel combo and caught thousands of fish on it. I think it was $20 new? Heck, I haven't purchased a new rod for myself of any kind in over 10 years, and I fish a lot by most people's standards. It's the Indian, not the arrow, IMO. You can get a starter rod and reel combo for under $200, with line. Look at Redington's combos...good bang for the buck with that company on all of their products. I would get a 6 weight for starting out around CenTex rivers. If I wanted to spend a little more, but not go crazy, I would put an orvis battenkill reel on any number of rods in the $250 to $350 range. Echo makes a great rod and they are all reasonably priced. As mentioned above, the salt water side of fly fishing is more expensive, because in that environment, higher quality gear is a necessity. You can still put together an adequate red fishing rig for under $500 though. For me personally, I fish with a fly rod when it's the best way to catch fish in a particular location or under particular conditions. I absolutely love it while I'm doing it. But, I also like to throw a topwater with my baitcaster set up or fish for bream with a zebco 33. So if you start fly fishing and become a gear-head, full-on addict, don't blame me

If it's available, absolutely. Start by free-lining it and put a cork on later if you are having trouble with the rocks. If it's not available, throw silver spoons, a DOA shrimp or a soft plastic on a 1/4 ounce jig head. You might also bring a couple short wire leaders in case the Spanish are all over the place.

I haven't fished the Flathead yet, but I did just listen to a great podcast with Hilary Hutcheson (the Drifting podcast hosted by JT Van Zandt), who owns a fly shop and guides in that area. After listening to her talk for 1.5 hours, I would definitely fish with her: https://www.larysflyandsupply.com/.

You know what's going to happen? African American alumni are going to sit down and tell the student athletes that have put their names on this movement that they are so proud of them for taking a stand and getting the statutes removed and buildings renamed, but the Eyes of Texas needs to stay, because the meaning of the song is not racist. And that will be the end of that...except athletes won't be required to sing the song. And I think there is a good chance that after those conversations happen, and after they realize that they attend a University of the 1st class whose current administration swiftly addressed their concerns and made changes that should have happened decades ago, they will sing the song louder than they ever have.
-
I have no idea how the UT band operates, but I suspect that either the band will pick a side or, more likely, the University will say, "play the song," or "you can't play the song." So as a practical matter, I don't expect this to be an issue. If the band plays the song, the vast majority of fans will sing, and most of them won't care whether the players or singing or kneeling.

This is fucking rich, coming from a Florida Gator. Get your own house in order before you weigh in on ours, you self righteous prick. Racism is horrible, please brutality is horrible. The University of Texas is not a perfect place, and it certainly has some uncomfortable history, but as a whole, there is no finer public university in the United States, warts and all. Our history is more than our failures. Hopefully, cooler heads will prevail on the Eyes, once everyone has had a chance to be heard on the subject.

Antivenin and antivenom are synonyms. If anyone is even slightly curious about poisonous snakes and antivenom, I highly recommend that you listen to The Texas Standard podcast from February 26, 2020. The whole series is wonderful, but this one in particular is outstanding. And it's only a couple minutes long. Below is a link to the website that has what appears to be a transcript of the podcast. https://www.texasstandard.org/stories/dont-mess-with-texas-coral-snakes/ Side note: will one of you important assholes please make a call and get someone to make a batch of Coral snake antivenom? Because apparently, we are fresh out. Seriously, what the actual fuck that we don't have anymore Coral snake antivenom because it's not profitable to make...I know we've got a lot of other issues right now as a nation, but can't some congressman sneak a grant in to manufacture Coral snake antivenom in the next round of stimulus? Next door neighbor found a coral snake in the kids' playhouse a couple weeks ago, for fucks sake.
