  1. Feels like a legal plant so Thomas and Alito can play the next round of “Wildcard, Bitches!!!”
  2. The joke around here is nobody actually gets into UCLA. They hire actors for the basketball games. LSU is so desperate for enrollment they continued to stalk my kids a year after they matriculated, basically offering money for them to transfer. Thirsty AF.
  3. In all deference to Adventure Time and Ricky and Morty, Pinky and the Brain might be the best absurdist cartoon ever.
  4. Not UC San Diego. University of San Diego. Private Catholic College.
  5. University of San Diego, as I recall, has one of the prettiest campuses in the country and will offer a top student pretty good merit.
  6. I’m pretty sure they fixed it. My mom’s realtor said she knew at least two families about 10-15 years ago in Westlake who basically decamped to the hunting lease in South Texas for their senior year to avoid the bloodbath for UT admissions on Westbank Drive. At least one wasn’t much more than deer camp. That probably sounds like Heaven to half of you. Not my bougie East Coast ass.
  7. If Wake doesn’t eat those innings in Game 3 of the 2004 ALCS, we don’t win that title. Legend.
  8. Man, it got fucking weird in here overnight.
  9. Sadly the reverse lead me to eventually smoking for 20 years until I kicked the habit.
  10. I mean, I’ve found them very pleasant to work with. But I have a vested interest in them continuing on. Putting my desire to make my client happy aside: it can go either way. Some interim’s kee staff on, some don’t. Tina Smith shitcanned Al Frankens whole office like 6 weeks after swearing in .
  11. Part of it has to do with the fact that the Senate, push come to shove, is ultimately a majority rules institution if the majority wants it to be. It’s tyranny of the minority by tradition and self imposed rules. You can always go “nuclear” and overrule the ruling of the chair. So ultimately, if the Democrats wanted to, they could do it.
  12. Yeah. He’s got a wandering dick and unlimited ambition, but he isn’t stupid.
  13. Este. Those running footsteps you hear is Manchin inserting himself into shutdown negotiations even as I type. This is gonna fuck up judiciary committee work for sure. I was negotiating with her office on something earlier this week. Furk.
  14. Newsom will appoint the replacement to serve out the term. The only question is if he picks among the already announced candidates or a placeholder. He’ll need to move fast though, otherwise Machin is going to insert himself into shutdown negotiations as the swing vote.
  15. Boy 2 is getting 12k a year plus a tuition lock from Oregon and is in the Clark Honors College. Not as generous as the SEC schools, but I’m kinda snobby about schools and I wanted him to go to an AAU (plus my coparent couldn’t get down with a Deep South state). @CooterBrown is correct: work the Common Data Set. It’s a treasury trove of info: how hard schools lean on early admission, applicant demographics, testing stat breakdowns, degree breakdowns, retention rates, how far short Admissions is falling and having to take off the wait list, etc.
  16. There is this concept of “Buyer and Seller” schools. Buyer schools have to pitch and offer students to get their class full. NC State and Michigan State are buyer schools. They will offer money, sometimes generously, to gifted OOS students. Michigan and North Carolina are Seller schools. They don’t have to do shit. To quote the sargeant from HEAT: this shit sells itself. Small schools have much going for them: small classes, personal contact with professors, usually very charming environments. But running into all your hookups every day in the dining hall can be a bit exhausting.
  17. Other than dumb rich kids, it’s just rare to pay full freight at a lower tier liberal arts school. I think Lewis and Clark offered Boy #1 31-32k a year. Which would have knocked the price almost in half. That’s not a screaming deal, but when you don’t have a good state option, and your kid isn’t engineer material, that number looks more reasonable.
  18. It will ease admission standards at just off of top schools (and really all schools below the top 15). From my college perspective: Williams and Amherst will always be lottery schools, but it will make admissions at the MIddleburys, Colby, Bates, Hamilton level little ivies easier. Especially, as @Brisketexan noted, you have a boy. Those schools will likely need to become more generous with their merit offers to coax kids into coming. Similar to what occurred in the 80s and 90s when the Gen X baby bust followed on the heels of the last big wave of Boomers.
  19. Look, I know these conversations always turn into liberal arts vs. technical degree shit flinging fests, but can we not.
  20. Boy #1 eked into a 33 on the ACT by virtue of a few decimal points, but the difference between a 32 and 33 is a big deal when merit money starts flowing.
  21. IF money is tight, you can get free, officially sanctioned SAT test prep at Khan Academy.
  22. I mean, it's possible for the Tulsa or OkState grad to do it......if they graduate top of class with honors and get into Warton or HBS for MBA. But a BBA from a non T-20 isn't going to get you shit in elite finance.
