  1. If during the winter power crisis, a democratic president had nationalized the Texas Grid and power companies, claiming heating peoples homes was more important than their right to self determination and Texas was incapable of handling a major power and winter storm, would you have embraced that? I mean, I would think Greg Abbott would welcome a government take over if it worked.
  2. Wife and I are eyeballing the next 18 months. I just can't do the grind in DC anymore and I'm FIRE-able right now. I worry about currency depreciation, but I don't know what to do about it. Long term, we are looking at Europe. Although I don't mind the politics, the idea of having to drop 25-40K a year in Obamacare is eyewatering. I'd rather take advantage of the French tax treaty and cheap healthcare. We started hatching a plan last year while in Normandy and Brittany, and we are going back in the spring to look at Montepellier-Nimes-Avignon, Touluse, and Bordeaux. I can fuck up some Gigondas, but I look like trash in a beret and french navy shirt.
  3. Este. He looks like shit, but still technically alive.
  4. I got a bit verklempt at the very end. Damn, I’ve been watching Corso since I was in college. It’s been a hell of a ride.
  5. He was very nice to me the day I visited, came out and chatted with me and my wife while we were eating. Didn’t know him from Adam but mentioned the Shag. I also didn’t give him any money other than the beef rib and brisket…..
  6. My grandmother sold a plot of land in the heart of the Eagle Ford in 1998. It was an overgrown patch that none of the family other than my grandfather had ever visited she had bought as a favor to a near do well realtive decades before. It was property locked, so even getting to it required getting permission from the surrounding owners. I think she sold it, and the mineral rights, for maybe 10k. Personally, I had 1000 shares of American Airlines in my Schwab check out basket when they were on the edge of bankruptcy right before they merged with US air. It was 2-ish dollars a share. I forgot to execute the trade because somebody walked in my office and I have the attention span of a dog.
  7. The Saints are sitting over here. Why wear an ersatz bag on your head in team shame, when you can get the original product?
  8. This. The only possible scenario where Manning comes out early is if the Saints have the first pick AND somehow Gail Benson takes a break from defending pedophilia to totally overhaul the front office. And that’s not going to happen.
  9. Good for them. I expect much hilarity from Jason and Travis as this progresses. Don't act you haven't bopped out to Shake It Off.
  10. Still the greatest Babylon Bee Headline of all time: https://babylonbee.com/news/loud-cheering-heard-from-lockheed-martin-board-room
  11. My Aunt and Uncle were died Red Reagan Republicans. He was an oil man. They are liberal now. Trump's behavior during his first term bothered them, but his rejection of Science during Covid infuriated my Uncle.
  12. From my anecdotal experience, the California kids coming out of California who did not get into UCLA/UCSD/Berkley/Santa Barbara/UW and have money go to Colorado. The others look at a range of other schools (Oregon/Arizona, etc.)
  13. The reason why there are so many Maryland kids sprinkled all over the eastern seaboard is because in state admissions to College Park is brutal. UMD makes a lot of money off mediocre full freight kids out of New Jersey.
  14. Ever since I rolled into DC in 1997 I’ve said the same thing: America is a center right nation that is deeply racist at its core. Everything else stems from there.
  15. The joke I always tell is whenever you see a Colorado Vs. Oregon game, the stands are full of a lot of California kids who didn’t get in their first choice UC school.
  16. Reed is a hard study school, like Swathmore or Chicago. Those kids spend all their free time in the library. You don’t go to Reed to rip toobs and play beer pong. You go to Reed to prep for a graduate degree.
  17. In all fairness to Midwest winters, they are cold as fuck, but the sun does come out. In the PNW a mood lamp and Vitamin D supplements are real. Do look at Lewis and Clark. They offered my son an enormous amount of money.
