  1. Universally I’m hearing all over town: Dems need to stop with the constant texting. It’s incredibly off puttinf
  2. Ruben Gallego, please come to the courtesy phone. Rueben Gallego, please come to the courtesy phone…
  3. If we really are talking about a 2-3 seat majority either way, they are going to be litigating his election for weeks or months
  4. Fight the GOP to a draw in midterms and see the Russians abandon Kherson? Dark Brandon is kinda slinging it around.
  5. Maybe 1 in 5 or 6 rn? If they hadn't fucked up NY, they would be favored to hold on by 3-4 seats. If there is one consistent in politics, is Democrats will always find new ways to blow their own dick off.
  6. Former House guy here. So the first thing to understand about the House is it's straight majority rules. Outside of a couple of procedural messaging options, the minority has no say in anything. At all. It's not like the Senate. If you can get to 218 (0r 217 depending), you can do anything you damn well please, including rewriting virtually every procedural rule. It also means Leadership holds all the keys to the good life system: good committee assignments, pressure to fund raise, tasty speaking slots on the floor, media opportunities, etc. For the minority, it's miserable: you lose every fucking day. Never win. Occasionally you get a good messaging tidbit, but that's it. In general, the house has way less "personalities" then the senate. Most members are trying to get through their days without popping up on the DC radar. Just going about their business, and as such, mostly just vote with leadership. The leadership losing a floor vote is akin to the British defeat at Dunkirk. When I was in the minority we won a late night vote on campaign finance reform and the dem staffers were in the gallaries heckling the GOP and their staff. I once saw David Obey throw hands with some GOP member after a close vote the GOP held open for like 3 hours sweet talking the last couple of votes they need. A Majority that can't rule with an iron fist isn't a majority at all. If the GOP reinstitutes the Hastert rule, which dictates that half the majority caucus has to support a measure to bring it to the floor, it creates huge headaches on things like raising the debt limit, where you would need most of the democrats to pass it, since the majority of republicans would oppose. A 1 to 2 seat majority raises the specter of losing floor votes on the regular and a majority in disarray. Particularily in a caucus that is at war with itself. It also raises the specter of the Democrats being able to use discharge petition to temporarily seize control of the floor for particular legislation. You are a Don Bacon and Tom Kean away from suddenly not controlling the floor on a major piece of legislation.
  7. The dildo of consequence rarely arrives lubed.
  8. Nevada, CA, and NY are all slow to finish counting. We probably won't know whether GA Runoff will be decisive for a couple of days. The House is *probably* GOP, but the question is whether they will have enough of a majority to effectively govern or whether factions of the party will make the house essentially a daily free for all.
  9. This is something that is going to continue to plague GOP politics until they can move on from anti-vax sentiment. There's emerging evidence they also aren't getting the flu shot.
  10. It’s ranked choice. They haven’t cut the Dem and counted the second choice votes.
  11. There’s sort of a DC insider saying about Hawaii and Alaska: You don’t understand their politics. It doesn’t comport to political rules we live by in the lower 48.
  12. Do another redistrict in NY, ala Texas in 2003. There’s gotta be a way to blue up the congressional delegation that will pass judicial muster.
  13. “Sarked” is now a permanent part of my vocabulary
  14. Man, I am glad I am not the head of government affairs at National Right To Life
  15. In all fairness, the District (with two Trump appointees) court put an enormous amount of work into the AL and LA VRA decision, but Kav gonna Kav. But yeah, if NY had been a bit more thoughtful and less greedy, they could have easily taken 3 seats
  16. That’s going to be a rough majority to manage. You’ve got 150 members who want to default on the debt and 25 who mostly want to vote with the Democrats to save their seats. Had the Dems been a bit more clever about NY and MD resistricting and not pushed nonpartisan redistricting in VA, CO and WA, they would have held the house.
  17. As Is my Mom and my Aunts. All love for my Maroon cousins. Beer, Beer for Old Austin High.
  18. There’s 8.5 % inflation, and the President has a 42% approval rating. The Dems should lose 50-80 seats tonight. The Senate should not even be in question. GOP candidates are underperforming Trump all over the board. This isn’t a win for Democrats, but GOP certainly ain’t pulling a Westlake- Austin High rn.
  19. All I know is if I’m Brian Flores lawyer, I’m feeling pretty fucking good this morning. As a Westlake homer, I’m hoping for the best for Sam, although with Foley in there I guess it’s a bit of a win win.
  20. Well, the chances that if he had become an academic that he would have fucked a few students is 100%
  21. 20+ years ago everyone agreed Jack Welch was the greatest CEO of the late 20th century. Now there’s an entire industry in debunking the myth of Welch and GE and listing all the ways he set the company up for its eventual demise and break up.
  22. My job involves me sitting down with strangers, and reading their body language, responses, and political office needs and necessities to convince them to do something in my employer's interest. And I don't have a PAC or write campaign checks. It's all personality, emotional intelligence, preparation, and a little bit of luck. I'm fucking good at my job. I am hell of a lobbyist. Along those lines: It's damn hard to be a good politician. It requires both physical stamina (they shake so many fucking hands), a thick skin, the ability to think on your feet, and being absolutely shameless, especially in asking for money. You don't want me engineering your electric car, even if I can tell you where the lithium in it comes from and why renewable energy challenges aren't a mining issue, it's a chemistry issue. If Elon Musk came on board and said: I want to improve Twitter's algorithm and interface to improve it's user experience and drive eyeballs/clicks/revenue, I'd buy that. When he showed up and basically said: I'm going to be a giant personality/troll, well, let's say I'm doubtful.
