I tried to upload some of my Xmas tree ornaments to makerworld with the proper attributions to the original models. The original licenses are pretty wide open compared to many others (Seems to be the basis for the models on the coop website and lots of etsy stuff), but the makerworld software didn't seem to like the links to other ecosystems for the reference file. Apparently after some googling appears there are some taboos about moving things from one ecosystem to the other or something.
  2. I think they certainly were reconcilable. The matters of 1054 were light weight nonsense compared to the issues of Chalcedon, and initially just reflected yet another minor dust up between east and west. Similar such had occurred many times and always worked its way out. The charges put forth in the papal bull about "Omitting" the Filioque, the practice of the married priesthood, growing beards, and using yeast are mostly absurdities. Hardly disagreements or misunderstandings of core Christological concepts on par with something like the Chalcedonian expression. I think that there certainly was a path to overcome, and in fact communion in many places went on. For example, there was a latin benedictine monastery on Mt. Athos that carried on in to the 13th century. 1054 was a scratch on the arm, 1204 resulted in a bloody amputation.
  3. I think you're picking nits. The scope and role of indulgences were expanded to jump start the 4th Crusade. While the practice was not wholly bad at all times throughout history, and was used for much good, where that all ended up a few centuries later was with right out abuses and scamming the people and Luther's reaction. The schism of 1054 was reconcilable. The sack of Constantinople was not. And without the ying and yang, here we are today.

Appreciate the thoughts. These really fine scale adjustments seem to make a substantial difference as you dial things in. Just turning on the default ironing setting, for example, made a huge difference in the quality of a recent print of a different model. At this point I am pretty happy with just being able to make the thing hollow on the inside and have a place where I can shove an LED light in there. The stair stepping is not really noticeable on the actual model at scale. The only support that model requires is a recessed area that I created so that you can turn the knob on the LED light. Otherwise the printer seems to handle it fine, but it did try to initially create some internal supports for the areas that I hollowed out with negative space further up the tower. I did some tweaks and check the sliced file before it goes to print and seems like it has done away with the internal supports.
  5. Agree with this, but I would not absolve the Orthodox Church either. There are plenty of people raised within the faith that are ignorant, and many that have found it newly that have an unbecoming zeal, especially online (the Orthobros in many cases, for example). And many others with legitimate experiences where the Orthodox Church has utterly failed them. We have the fortune of both basically irrelevance and unfamiliarity in the West and America to our advantage in many cases. Everyone needs to do better, but especially us.

Also, not sure the longevity of those LED lights, and it looks fine unlit. Instead of the LED light, I want to see what is looks like with a christmas tree light just shoved up the hole. Here is an unlit version in matte. The matte doesn't work at all witht eh light, nothing comes through.

Yeah, tried the former but the rectilinear looks worse imo and gives more distinct lines. I am inclined to just force solid walls like the top.
  8. I want to pull on the thread regarding the role of the 4th crusade as ultimately fomenting the Protestant reformation a bit more. The Roman Pope intended to use the indulgences scheme to man the 4th Crusade. Ultimately, it wasn't enough, and as 956 lays out, Venice (and an exiled byzantine) provided the real financial and logistical footing. Five hundred years later, the indulgence scheme had evolved in the West into a broad, outright ecclesiastical scam. This monk Luther took offense to both the financial scam and papal authority broadly. Next blink of the eye, at least in relative terms, and we got whole scores of American preachers from 1000 different sects that are so theologically unrooted that, even if there were inclined to try, would not be able to fundamentally understand the Christology of Athanasius nor the ecclesiology of the broader Church. But they got a seven piece band for entertainment, and man, do they put on a great Easter performance if you are so inclined. 1054, 1204, 1453. Them the dates required to understand why American Christianity is such a shit show. IMHO of course.
  9. Yep, I've diagnosed a few rear main seal leaks and a power steering leak location exactly via this method.
  10. Prime cruising season is upon us fellas.

Think that I got an ornament that I am pretty happy with. Maybe will play with walls on the base to try to hide the infill showing through. These are $26 dollars on the coop website.
  12. The world would be very different today if not for the 4th crusade, certainly the "christian world" would be.
  13. Or as John Julius Norwich put it in his Short History of Byzantium... The 4th crusade, if it indeed can be so described, surpassed even its predecessors in faithlessness and duplicity, in brutality and greed. By the sack of Constantinople, Western civilization suffered a loss greater than the sack of Rome in the fifth century or the burning of the library of Alexandria in the seventh, perhaps the most catastrophic single loss in all of history. Politically, too, the damage done was incalculable. Byzantium never recovered any considerable part of its lost dominion. Instead, the Empire was left powerless to defend itself against the Ottoman tide. There are few greater ironies in history than the fact that the fate of Eastern Christendom should have been sealed by men who fought under the banner of the Cross. Those men were transported, inspired, encouraged and ultimately led by Enrico Dandolo in the name of the Venetian Republic and, just as Venice derived the major advantage from the tragedy, so she and her magnificent old Doge must accept the major responsibility for what that they wrought upon the world.
  14. Counterfactual history is fun and totally masturbatory, but I guess my point was beware the unintended consequences. The 4th Crusaders sack of Constantinople totally illegitimized the basic concept of the western crusades as defenders of the Christian sphere. It irreparably damaged eastern and western christian relations, the ramifications of which have taken like 8 centuries to get back to the point where we even want to talk to each other and are willing to compliment each others hats. If you want to connect more dots, I would argue it ultimately set the board for protestant reformation and all the down stream implications of that. And permanently weakened the eastern Christian front, setting the stage for the ultimate fall in 1453 and the later second Ottoman expansion into Europe. So basically, the world, both in geopolitical and theopolitical terms, looks very very different today if they just sail on to their original destinations instead of turning their armies on both western and eastern christians.
  15. Quan was so real for this.
  16. I was thinking more like 1570 or 1770 Turks.
  17. My first reaction to the headline was "We're the fucking Turks now goddamnit."
  18. How should an FFL transfer short-barreled rifles and short-barreled shotguns? The GCA prohibits an FFL from selling or delivering a short-barreled rifle or short-barreled shotgun, except as specifically authorized by the Attorney General. 18 U.S.C. 922(b)(4). Traditionally, the NFA approval process satisfied this requirement. Although the district court enjoined the NFA approval process, it did not enjoin the GCA authorization requirement. At this time, no regulatory mechanism exists to authorize FFLs to transfer short-barreled rifles or short-barreled shotguns outside the NFA process. ATF understands the burden this will create, and ATF is creating forms and drafting regulations as quickly as possible to implement a non-NFA approval process. To deal with the disruption that gap will create in the interim, ATF will exercise its enforcement discretion and not enforce 18 U.S.C. § 922(b)(4) until such regulations exist. The GCA transfer approval requirement does not apply to transfers to state entities because of a GCA exception for government entities. 18 U.S.C. § 925(a). Consequently, apart from any enforcement-discretion determination, federal law permits FFLs to continue transferring short-barreled rifles and short-barreled shotguns to state and local governments for official use. Do unlicensed individuals need ATF approval to manufacture or transfer a short-barreled rifle, short-barreled shotgun, silencer, or any other weapon? No, because of ATF’s decision to exercise enforcement discretion, unlicensed individuals no longer need to file a Form 1 and receive ATF approval before making or transferring such items. Unlicensed individuals may voluntarily file Form 1s, if they wish to register their firearms or devices in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record. GCA requirements continue to apply, however. For example, unlicensed individuals may not engage in the business of manufacturing or transferring these weapons. Unlicensed individuals may not transfer NFA items to residents of other states or to persons prohibited by law from possessing firearms. Interesting. But I can still just go ahead and put a stock on my short barrel upper.

  21. I don't have a problem with that. It is important that we are transparent and honest about what we do and who we are. While I am against the death penalty in all cases, I do think that framing this case within the military context is appropriate and brings with it some unique considerations. The optics of rolling the guy out there in a wheelchair and putting some lead in his chest is going to be so ripe for propaganda.
  22. The death penalty is barbaric and unfitting a modern society. I think it's a good thing that it will be televised. All executions carried out by the state in the name of the people should be done in public and the public should be forced to watch.
