  1. Ok I watched it. Wouldn’t put it in a bracket, but quite enjoyable and worth a watch on a non-football weekend.
  2. My wife’s ex-husband (a cop), his parents, and my FIL are all stalwart Rs. All voted D for the first time ever without any coaxing. Supposedly it was out of consideration for the two daughters/granddaughters.
  3. I’ve half-heartedly called some of these track stars “cute” or “pretty” just as my wife has openly admired some swimmer dudes. But I know better than to say what I really feel about Anna or Sydney. My god, they are breathtaking.

Granted I’m biased for Spain, but I’m still livid their best player is out from a dirty tackle without anything more than a flaccid finger wave from the ref.

How on earth did the German not get a yellow for that tackle on Pedri. Huge.

I usually have to drag my wife into watching soccer, but she was glued to the tv the last 30.
  7. How does this even come up in conversation? Interviewer: “Who’s the hardest player you’ve had to cover in space?” TO: “I don’t understand what the hell you’re even talking about which is why I had to transfer out from a perfectly fine situation and into Lubbock fucking Texas.”
  8. I’ve reread the series several times and recognized very little from the trailers. This being one of my all-time favorite series, I have major concerns B&W are improvising far too much. They did such a great job adapting GOT seasons 1-5, I had high hopes for this. I’ll watch but my expectations are greatly diminished.
  9. Given the loss I’m actually glad I started Dry January, though it took forever to fall asleep last night without the aid of booze. I woke up sad and somewhat disappointed, which is better than sad and somewhat disappointed and hungover. Got to enjoy my last vacation day today with my kids without feeling like dogshit. After most losses I want no part of reading sports sites or Reddit. We did well enough in the game (and season) that I don’t mind this time. Better team won.
  10. I got married well after 2005. After we beat Alabama in September, she sensed a disturbance in the force. I’ve been utterly insufferable since 11:20am Sunday.
  11. Whatever else happens this season, damn if this wasn’t cathartic. Like all Sundays, I was a contented and attentive father and husband. I woke up early to clean up the kitchen of all the bourbon and queso so my wife could wake up to a clean house. I played Ninja Turtle “sword fight” with my 6-year-old, played Minecraft with my 10-year-old, and watched terrible anime with my 13-year-old. I mowed. I napped. I was happy to provide, same as always. But goddamn if I wasn’t just a smidge happier and more graceful to my family today. It’s been so long since Texas football was an actual source of pride or happiness. It’s not necessary to my or my family’s wellbeing, but it sure as shit was something I forgot how much I valued the last 15 years. Thank you to the players and boosters who brought the right people together. It’s gonna be a good ride. I feel it.
  12. I married an Aggie. We had to visit there for a wedding, and the wife wanted to bring the kids to show off her old stomping grounds for a long weekend. It took about three hours after arriving before she asked me to Google what to do with the kids for the next two days. We ended up at a third rate bowling alley and other bullshit. Kids have never asked to go back.
  13. Granted I don’t watch a ton of soccer these days, but that was one of the best individual skill goals I’ve ever seen.
