Even that doesn't always work. Did you see the bodycam footage of that officer who shot that 17-yr-old girl who had a butcher knife? He probably backed up a block or two away from his car trying to get her to drop the knife and finally had to shoot when she started moving quickly towards him. Luckily she didn't die, but she could have.

And before anyone tries to point out this person didn't have a knife, I wish people would stop saying that someone was unarmed like that equals "not dangerous". You may never know if that 142-lb woman has a black belt or is an MMA fighter. Or if a lucky swing will knock someone down and they hit their head on the concrete and die. I saw a story in the past few months of a female jogger beating the shit out of a guy who attacked her. Don't take anything for granted.

So we're supposed to treat cops like heroes but they don't have to act like heroes, just like any other scared citizen.

I'm fine with treating them just like any other scared citizen, but are you fine with not treating them like heroes?

  2. Not disagreeing with any of this, but the other big issue is that there is just not the depth of talent.  WBB is a prime example of this.  Contrast it with MBB, where there is so much more top talent to go around.  They can't ALL go to the same schools, so it spreads around, creates more parity and, as a result, more upset and excitement come tourney time.

As compared to baseball it's because of one pitcher being able to dominate an entire regional like Elish just did. You just can't do that throwing overhand.

Basketball is almost all because depth of talent but it takes more than that in a sport like baseball where upsets are way more common. The difference in pitching style is huge in softball in terms of limiting upsets in the long run.

  3. Exactly. He stood as close to the camera as he possibly could to look as tall as he possibly could. What a coincidence he's the only guy who had his helmet and therefore needed to put it in the bleacher seat so he had to stand closer to the camera. He should have just worn 3" heels.

Everyone with a brain knows he's not 5'10". 5'8" has always been the most reasonable estimate. He should just own it.

It is murder.  and I addressed the topic of having to choose between one life or the other above.

Sorry it makes you uncomfortable.  Seriously.

Dancing around what it is, is pure political gymnastics.  discussing it as if it is a trip to get a manicure is pretty damn outrageous, IMHO.

Is removing the embryo/fetus from the womb without willful termination murder? Do you think the State should have the power and right to force a woman to be its incubator?

Are you mad at God for all the unborn children He kills every year via miscarriage? If you believe that life begins at conception then you believe that 30-50% of human lives end in utero.

  5. I don't know, I think uneatable may be the correct term there. Inedible implies that it literally can't be consumed by eating (like if their burgers were made out of iron). Uneatable says they can't be eaten because they taste like shit. Inedible can also be used in the latter situation but it leaves open the possibility of the former. Uneatable generally only means you can't eat it because it sucks.

    Deep thoughts.

  6. Yeah some shitty fans and some really stupid and/or shitty shit from the players.

I'm not worried about the club acting like they did nothing wrong w.r.t. the FFP investigation. That's their job. Then reality should strike and they should be banned from the competition for a year. I mean I guess it's wrong but so is Alabama acting like they don't cheat in recruiting. I'm a bit too old to care about that anymore.

Really? You thought a majority of Americans supported aborting a 9 month old fetus?

I think he's referring to the KNOWN FACT that anyone who has ever voted for a Democrat in their life is in favor of infanticide. I'm sure I can dig up a source somewhere.

  8. lulz

The bin Laden family is fucking huge and lots of them hated Osama. His dad had over 50 children. We'll need more details to know if this money was related to terrorism (aside from standard Saudi human rights violations). But good effort.

The lynchpin of Roe is that the right of privacy makes the right to reproductive autonomy a "fundamental right," which requires a compelling state interest to infringe and a narrowly tailored, least restrictive infringement.  Because of the state of fetal viability science in 73, it was generally agreed that first trimester fetuses could not survive outside the womb, so the state could demonstrate no compelling interest in regulating such fetuses until after the first trimester, when viability was more certain.  The current state of science might move that date.  I don't keep up with that, because generally the abortion debate makes me shut down.

Will be interesting when Alabama moves the allowable abortion date earlier, SCOTUS agrees that's reasonable "due to scientific advances", and then thousands of women in Alabama don't "abort" their pregnancies but rather "deliver early" by c-section, then use the Alabama safe-haven law to immediately and legally surrender the 6-week-old embryo to the emergency room workers.

  10. Yeah, fuck owners spending money to improve a team. I LOVE THE PITTSBURGH PIRATES OF THE 2000s DECADE THAT IS THE DREAM, DON'T SPEND ANYTHING, JUST RAKE IN THE MONEY. WE NEED MORE OWNERS WHO ARE IN IT ONLY TO TURN A PROFIT!

  11. While all this should actually be in the UCL thread, the bottom line is that UEFA has to ban City from it next year or else the rules are not only dumb, they're toothless and therefore pointless. Of course with soccer orgs they might simply be looking for some hush money. When the decision is being reached in the "investigatory chamber" to forward the case to the "adjudicatory chamber" your bureaucracy might not intend to actually get things done.

  12. I'm not watching any video at work, but I don't see in the quoted portion what they're covering up.

Now the comment about the video being released is standard police bullshit. Yeah, it's unfortunate that the public knows the facts. Real shame.

Early Entry Players – Draft Rights

Draft Rights for Early Entry players[3] are a little different from Draft Rights for other draft eligible players. For teams, things remain mostly the same – they gain Draft Rights the same way and the Required Tender requirements are the same. The only difference is how long the player’s drafting team holds his Draft Rights. Unlike other players whose Draft Rights are kept for one full year, Early Entry players are bound by their drafting teams until one year after the first NBA Draft they could have entered as non-Early Entry players. For example, Ben Simmons declared for the 2016 NBA Draft after his freshman season, making him an Early Entry player. Whichever team drafts Simmons will hold his Draft Rights until the 2020 NBA Draft, one year after the first draft Simmons could have entered as a non-Early Entry player (2019 NBA Draft). [4] As such, the consequences of an Early Entry player not signing a player contract are much more severe than for non-Early Entry players.

These rules for Early Entry players apply even if the player signs a contract overseas and attempts to be considered under International/Eurostash player rules (explained below). There is no loophole for Early Entry players to shorten their drafting team’s Draft Rights period.

You seem to be confused. If he withdraws his name from the draft by June 10th then he can't be drafted. If he's not drafted then there's no such thing as a drafting team. No drafting team means no draft rights.

Also, while I'm not sure a player would ever do this, I think if the possibility is discussed often enough the NBA will move one or both so that the lottery happens after the withdrawal deadline.
