Holding should be called way more often. If scoring drops then oh well, that's the way the game is supposed to be played. If it has basically any potential effect on the play it should be called.

I wonder if he knows where the Appalachian in Appalachian State comes from. Does he know Appalachian isn't the name of an actual state?

Neither is better, they are the same. Both gain 12 yards in 3 plays. One only looks better if you can only see one number at a time.
No, the series of 4 yard gains is absolutely better since the entire point of this discussion is the predictive aspect of these ratings.

Just need them to beat ND at the end. Luckily the Pac 12 South is so bad, they should probably be 9-2 going into that home game. Last night was the perfect game for Texas. USC beat a ranked team while their offense looked like complete shit.
They'll be underdogs in Utah this week.

S&P+ is their Possession Efficiency measure times Points Per Successful Play.
We are like #15 in Possession Efficiency which scores each drive based on: scoring/flipping field position/stopping opponents from scoring (of course adjusted to opponent).
It's their IsoPPP (Points per Successful Play) that kills us. Largely because we have a large volume of successful plays.
In their system getting stuffed twice then scoring on a75-yard bomb is 10 times better than a sustained 10 to 15-play drive.
It's supposed to be that way. IsoPPP is an offset to drive efficiency. They use S&P+ over S&P because the two contributing factors to S&P+ are highly uncorrelated, but it's also not as good a predictor as the old method.
Yes, this is a huge factor. I haven't crunched their numbers enough but it's something I might disagree with if and when I do it. Drive efficiency is the point of football, it's essentially efficiency with each possession. For example if you have an offense that gains 4 yards every play, so a mean of 4 and a standard deviation of 0, you will score a touchdown on every single drive where you don't commit a turnover. That is a perfect offense.
But I have a feeling it would score lower in S&P+ than an offense that averages 8 yards per play with a standard deviation of 16. But that "twice as explosive offense" has a probability of gaining a first down on three plays of about 70% compared to the 100% probability of the less explosive offense.

Look guys, we have played 3 games where the results make us look like a top 10 team to a computer (USC, TCU, Oklahoma). We have played 4 games where the results make us look like a completely average team (Maryland, Tulsa, Kansas State, Baylor). Sure a ranking in the 40s still seems low, but in more than half our games we have looked mediocre.

Sure that is a penalty, but if they call that, they better call the ones against Watson. He just got hit in the knee with a helmet the drive before, he has been getting hit, driven to the ground, and landed on just after getting rid of the ball multiple times. No calls.
If I was Watson, I would talk to my agent about having to play with a fucked up lung and getting zero help from BoB. He should not be put in this position anyway, he's going to get seriously hurt.
Oh I agree, I really do think the biggest issue is Mercilus not getting himself really fucked up with a broken neck. The coaching staff needs to point that out to him in film review because it's incredibly dangerous.

Until he gets a stinger and the refs didn't call a penelty WAHHH
Fucking bullshit because Watson has been taking big hits the whole game without getting any calls.
Mercilus lowered his head and speared Allen's arm with the crown of his helmet. Tough penalty to call but incredibly dangerous for Mercilus to do that. He's lucky he hit Allen's arm and not Clowney's helmet, he could have really hurt himself. And that's why it's against the rules.

Lost to Penn State in overtime, have obliterated the rest of their weak schedule. They should be at least three touchdown favorites in each of their remaining games, so they should end up 11-1 in the regular season with only the overtime loss in State College. They are essentially #29 in the latest AP Poll, they'll probably end up a Top 15 team this season. Just thought I'd point out a small subplot to the season. If they'd closed out that game against Penn State then it could have been a really interesting story.

As for Oklahoma staying put while we dropped when we beat them, that's actually easier to explain than our current rating. Advanced ratings take a look at all games played by every team, so the same week we played Oklahoma, the following games happened:
Tulsa 26, Houston 41 (we had played Tulsa)
Kansas St. 34, Baylor 37 (we had played KSU, they had played Baylor)
Iowa St. 48, Oklahoma St. 42 (they had played ISU)
Washington 31, UCLA 24 (they had played UCLA who overperformed their previous games in this one)
Florida Atlantic 52, Old Dominion 33 (they had played FAU and Old Dominion had shocked VT, now there's more data on them)
Maryland 21, Michigan 42 (we had played and lost to Maryland)So one result between the two teams should have moved us up and Oklahoma down. 6 other results should have moved us down and/or Oklahoma up.

The thing is, S&P+ isn't necessarily broken. @Huckleberryuses it in his models, I think.
And Sagarin's ratings, which also use MOV, have us at #16 in the country. So it clearly isn't just that we're winning by close margins.
I don't use S&P+ at all, mine are completely independent.
I've got us as #11 but #14 in my power rating. We are a Top 15 team in terms of team strength. S&P+ is "incorrect" when it comes to our team so far this year. The interesting thing is that we are about to come up on a stretch of 4 games which are basically coin flips according to the numbers.

While conceptually it's a good idea it unfortunately is not a practical option because television contracts are negotiated well in advance and the networks will want to know exactly how many spots they have to sell, so an unknown number of games won't fly. That's why it's not discussed. Sucks but that's reality. So forever ago. Gotcha.
Whats arbitrary is to select teams based on a predetermined number of teams (whether that’s 4, 8 or 64) rather than a predetermined set of criteria.
All P5 conference champs and undefeated teams get in. Problem solved. All arguments eliminated.
Problem is, nobody ever discusses it because it’s unconventional and...must have set number and number must always be bigger to include more. -
2004 Pittsburgh was more recent although they were Big East champions.2002 Sugar Bowl. FSU had four losses. Five after losing to UGweve sen more than once where the two best teams are in the same conference.
If you apply arbitrary criteria you get arbitray outcomes.
Of course even more recent than that was a season where 6 teams were legitimate title contenders (2008), so your example from 16 years ago is predictably weak.- 2

Sam has improved a lot this season, but he still has a few WTF throws every game. To his credit, they are no longer WTF decisions, but just poor throws that sail out of bounds, over the heads of open receivers, or into the ground short of the target. We can survive those, and have, for the most part. His placement on the deep ball is not there yet, though.
Came here to say this after my tenth rewatch of the game. So many little things he can still get better on that would have huge impacts on our offensive production. Even successful plays that could become even more successul like this one (1:39:25 if it doesn't queue for you):
This was a big first down gain. It could have been a touchdown if it were a good throw. Watch the replay from behind the offense. If he hits Burt on the run he has about 30 yards of grass between him and the next OU defender. I understand in that moment just wanting to make sure it's a completion to get the first down, but as his confidence continues to grow I think he'll keep improving on things like this. To be fair, Burt didn't have to jump and go to the ground to make the catch, but if Ehlinger leads him a bit he's a threat to score.

Most watched game of the season on Fox. Dude is asking for trouble because A&M-Alabama was watched by a handful more people. Of course that was at 2:30 on CBS.

Not if he moves back and it's a backward pass, like Oklahoma threatened on Saturday. That play is one of the next steps in the evolution of this formation.

I have often thought about how cool it would be for Herman to be low-key developing something for Casey Thompson like Harsin's 2010 "Ash Package." Ideally, we'd run the package once or twice a game over the back portion of our season (say against WVU, TTU, or ISU)? Roll out a simple package of plays that Thompson can execute and give him a chance to hurt the defense with his legs, then when they key in on him in the run game, give him passes he can execute.
I don't think most people have thought enough about how the new redshirt rule could affect late season games. Elsewhere I posted that if Ojomo is actually giving the OL fits in practice on his pass rush then we should selectively use him against our good passing opponents instead of just waiting until the end of the season. Let's say we're holding everyone back just in case we make the Big 12 title game. A true freshman who has a specific skill that could be deployed should be used in spots against specific opponents, not all at the end of the year. If we have a guy who is a pass rushing specialist, he should play against West Virginia and Texas Tech instead of against Iowa State and Kansas. Play him against WVU and Tech and then sit him against ISU and KU.

Here is that list with the difference in values:
I've been saying we're about a #15 team in terms of team strength and I do believe that. We're #23 in the nation in this metric.
